keep curious minds happy & busy! . I got this for my six year old niece's birthday and she opened it while staying with us for a visit. She and my two sons (6 and 3 years old) played with it constantly all week long. They: looked at ants crawling on the sidewalk, used the tweezer to capture beetles to put into the small, lidded vials for examination (catch and release, of course), looked at leaves, dust bunnies, clods of dirt, everything indoors and out. She said it was the best gift she has ever gotten.

It's small and convenient to take along everywhere and even has a lanyard to clip to the microscope when out and about. When inside, it can be clipped into the holder so that is standing upright like a more conventional microscope.

I am buying a bunch more for the upcoming birthdays of my son's friends.
Fun and educational . Lots of fun. The prepared slides are great. Great for exploring the backyard, beach, or forest.
Smart Lab Indoor/Outdoor Microscope Reviews
Grandma's imput . This toy is educational and interesting to my 10 year old Grandson. Our only regret was the size of the microscope. It is only about the size of my index finger.
Smart Lab Indoor/Outdoor Microscope Opinions
Small flimsy . The plastic base for the microscope is pretty flimsy and doesn't hold the slides well. It's tricky to move the slide around and get the object lined up. The microscope itself is way smaller than I expected and just plastic. My son likes it better off the stand to look at the fibers on the couch or the lines in his skin. I also hoped this would be fun for a smart 4 year old with great fine motor skills and a high interest in science. Perhaps I should have listened to the age recommendation. It won't be a waste, and I'm sure we'll enjoy it. I had just hoped for better quality.
mom of a young scientist . We bought this microscope for our daughter as a gift from Santa.....what a disappointment!! We had to tell her that Santa messed up. The microscope couldn't be any smaller and cheaper! Can't see any image clearly - and the image (slide) will not stay in place long enough to view.

Terrible!!! Parents - Do not buy this toy!
Cute Microscope . I didn't wanna spend hundreds on an expensive scope, so I figured I'd try something affordable just to give it a try. Well, although I'm not a boy anymore, I have a habit of enjoying products designed for children. Well, this scope it designed for children as far as I can tell. Anyways, children or adult, this toy is a no-brainer. For instance, why spend time trying to turn annoying knobs to focus in on a microscopic area, if you are instead able to jump directly to the location? This scope is made whereas you don't need to turn any knob. Although it comes with a stand with a wheel/knob, it really serves no purpose other than to position the scope for no-hands usage. The know moves the scope up and down, but its not really focused until the scope is literally TOUCHING the lense. Therefore, the knob to adjust the microscope is not really needed; its only used to make the thing look realistic. The thing about this scope in particular that I love is that you can walk around with it and even take it outside or just HOLD IT TO an object like a pen on a piece of paper and literally "zoom in" on any material. Most times when you use a microscope, everyone is taught to use slides. Although slides are a part of every microscopic experience, this particular scope does not need any. Instead of sliding the slide under the lense to see the material microscopically, all you need to do is hold the scope to any surface and look in, much like holding a pen to a paper. The scope can be used with the stand, or held like a pen straight from your hand like when a doctor sticks that thing in your ear to check for wax!Anyways, besides the actual scope, it also comes with a cute carrying case. And, it comes with an attachable neck strap. And the most interesting and useful feature of all is the book that comes with it! The book shows you all sorts of interesting ways to use the scope. I would HIGHLY recommend this product for any parent to buy for their children, but also for any parent who ACTS like a child!Unfortunately, with all the good stuff, there's just one minor drawback. The slide holder under the lense is kinda not easy to use. I had to stick my finder in just to get the plastic piece to bend a little in order so that I can get the slide in the tray. Otherwise, its a perfect product!Last but certainly not least, GREAT PRICE!!!!!!
Good beginner microscope . I purchased this for my granddaughter for her 8th birthday. She loved it! The microscope is quite small, which gives a small field of view, but we could see more detail than I expected. The small size of the microscope is actually a major plus for a 8 year old: they can pick it up and put it in a pocket. My granddaughter took it with her almost everywhere she went. She examined rocks, bugs, plants, animals, practically everything she walked past. The microscope also comes with a stand and slides which made it fun to examine the "samples" she collected.

This microscope is inexpensive, but fairly well-made for the price. For my granddaughter, the fact she could carry it around made it "fun" enough that it was a big hit.
A dollar store item for $18.00. Cheap tiny and poor value. . The biggest thing about this toy is the packaging. No amount of excess packaging can make a cheesy, dollar store item into a $20 "science" toy among savvy consumers. And the accompanying book, doesn't do much to redeem it, either.

The "scope" is small, about 3" long and the "stand" that makes this a "microscope" is a flimsy, laughable joke. Pay very close attention to the size of the fingers holding the scope on the box. It may give you a clue as to it's size and the stand is by all comparison, miniscule.

On second thought maybe this thing is a "micro" scope but never a microscope. Be forewarned, if you expect anything more for your $20 bucks, shame on you.

Actually shame on Discovery Kids. I've seen better products in a dollar store. They should be taken to task for the excess packaging waste.

This one's going back for a refund. I was too embarrassed to give it to my 8 year old grandson. No kidding.
A Hunk of Junk . The title tells it all. My husband put it together for our grandson. By the time he had it together, the little boy lost interest. It is flimsy, not easily held and not very appealing. It was a waste of money!
FUN AND EDUCATIONAL . i bought this for my 8yr old grandson for christmas. He had a great time with it. It was compact so easy to carry around outside for exploring. the value for what you get is great. it worked perfectly.
