Ferrofluid Science Project Set 60cc Bottle and Assorted Magnets - A ferrofluid (from the Latin ferrum, meaning iron) is a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field. It is a colloidal mixture comprising extremely small magnetic particles suspended in a synthetic oil. The particles are coated with a a soap or detergent to prevent them from clumping together.
Ferrofluids are composed of nanoscale ferromagnetic particles suspended in a carrier fluid, usually an organic solvent or water. The ferromagnetic nano-particles are coated with a surfactant to prevent their agglomeration (due to van der Waals and magnetic forces). Although the name may suggest otherwise, ferrofluids do not display ferromagnetism, since they do not retain magnetisation in the absence of an externally applied field. In fact, ferrofluids display paramagnetism, and are often referred as being "superparamagnetic" due to their large magnetic susceptibility.

Unusual and fun to experiment with. . I don't know if there is any practical application for ferrofluid but it is certainly a novelty to use. Be sure you don't spill it as it is pretty messy. Also, be careful when it is in an open container as a magnetic field will pull it right out of or over the side of the container. The attraction to a rare earth magnet is amazingly strong. Bottom line is it's fun but not suitable for pre-teens without supervision.

Ferrfluid . Awesome stuff but VERY MESSY! Stains everything it touches (clothes, ground, YOUR SKIN).

You'll have a good time, just wear rubber gloves and do it outside.
Ferrofluid Science Project Set 60cc Bottle and Assorted Magnets Opinions
Fun kit! . The 60cc bottle is plenty of fluid. The included petri dishes are a good start, but it's fun to try other containers. Highly curved surfaces (such as test-tubes) lead to interesting results. Also had fun with ferrofluid in a glass container with a non-miscible, slightly viscous liquid layered on top. Polyethylene glycol 400 works great. Water kinda works, but tends to develop an 'oil slick' on top.

As previous reviewers have noted, the ferrofluid can get messy. I was glad I used disposable gloves.
Science is fun . Great product, but as others have said it can be messy so be sure to wear gloves and cover the area you're working in. My only complaint is that I wish I could get more fluid at a cheaper price, the bottle is kind of small. The product description is correct, but for some reason I didn't realize it would be so small.
