Works best for the younger ones . This works best with the under 6 crowd, especially if you hide it outside and then pretend to find it. They are still gullible at that age and don't question that the skeleton is plastic. It's on the small side so you have to claim it's a baby or something. For the older kids, I think it's more educational than amazing.

The only drawback was the quality of the fit. I had trouble getting the skeleton pieces to stay together. It took a 5 minute epoxy job later that night to get everything to hold together and that didn't last beyond some basic play. It's made to stay on a shelf and be looked at. That said, for $15.00, it's just fine.
Smithsonian Diggin' Up Dinosaurs T-Rex Reviews
Awesome Project! . My 4 year old simply loved this project and carries the skeleton model around everywhere. I was worried about it being for 8+ year olds. He had very little problems with it. An adult needed to attach the legs. Be prepared for a powdery, rocky mess - but worth it. Our only problem was the dinosaur's head went down our sink hole so we're trying to figure out how to find another head ;o) Will definitely get the Velociraptor.
Smithsonian Diggin' Up Dinosaurs T-Rex Opinions
An 8-year old dug it! . This was a birthday present for my eight-year old daughter. She had great fun digging it up at her birthday party. Safety was not an issue with the wooden mallet and the included goggles though I would note that she reported the goggles as uncomfortable. The cleaning of the bones was a bit challenging for an eight year old as was the assembly of the whole dinosaur so she needed help from an older sibling. A great toy for dinosaur fans, aspiring young archaeologists or simply children with some curiosity and capacity for wonder.
Great experience! . My 4 year old son enjoyed this toy so much I had to write a review. For an hour solid he hammered away at the block of sand, wacking his hand numerous times but never complaining. He had so much fun and every minute was shouting to show me something he had chisled out. As a parent I loved the hand-eye coordination aspect of it as well as the sense of discovery. I am ordering the velociraptor one now and wish there were more options.
A+++ GREAT toy! :o) . This is the best toy ever. Our 5 year old is completely captivated. I *wish* I had had a toy like this when I was little. He is in his own world just sitting out on the deck hammering away. I am online trying to find more of these as we speak. A+++ :o)
Nice for all the little Palentologists . My son received this for his 6th birthday. He had received a similar toy from a different manufacturer in the past and had enjoyed that and worked at it for over a month on and off. This project was much quicker to "excavate". He had a lot of fun with it but he had all the pieces removed within an hour or two. Not wanting the mess from the block in my house I had him work on it outside, it can be quite messy although was not half as bad as the one from the other manufacturer that he had used prior. My son was quite excited with the T-Rex skeleton that he found. The pieces go together quite easily. It was not something that kept well though as he wanted to play with it in his dinosaur playset and he kept breaking it apart with the pieces eventually becoming lost to the place where lost toy pieces go. I must say that several months after it was purchased his grandmother found the exact same item at a local store for only $10, which I would say is a better price. She did buy him another one which we will save until the weather becomes nice again and we can get back outside to use it. Gotta love winter in the Northeast!!
Smithsonian Diggin Up Dinosaurs T-Rex . My son loved this! He spent hours at the table digging for bones and once they were all found, put the dinosaur together and still has it in his room!
Mason will be thrilled on his upcoming birthday . I took my grandsons to an ice cream place and what fascinated my none year old grandson, Mason, was that a boy at a nearby table had a Smithsonian toy with hammer and other parts that helped him "dig for treasure" and reveal the hidden pieces. He walked over close to watch, but he did not speak to the boy.

A few weeks later, I saw this type of Smithsonian toy on sale at Amazon. The one we'd seen was a building. The one I got Mason was a T Rex, because he has more interest in animals.

He will open his gift on his July birthday and be excited to have his own.

Niece loved it! . We bought this as a gift for our 5 year old niece who loves science and dinosaurs and she said it was her favorite birthday present!
Missing a leg . I was pretty excited that this was a Smithsonian toy, and then disappointed that it was not as good as the cheaper fossil kits. The "fossil" was slightly more brittle and more difficult to piece together, and then it was missing a leg--a hind leg. The T-rex fossil obviously won't stand up without one of the back legs. Other than that, the tools were great and it came with goggles, which my four-year-old was excited about for about two minutes.
