It needs really bright sun. . I got this on sale for under four bucks. This toy is like the silicone vibrating bugs that were very popular, except it doesn't need batteries. It is a nice way to show the younger kids the concept of power coming from light and sun.
The main problem with this bug is that it need really bright sun before it can start moving around. On a mild cloudy day it will vibrate just a little bit. But indoor, it cannot move even if you shine it direct with a strong flashlight.
The head detaches very easily and you may want to put superglue on it. The legs are made of steel not the silicone legs popular with the other bugs.
We were looking and searching for the switch since we couldn't make it move when we first unpack it. I thought we received a DOA bug, but what it needs is a really bright sun.-

Loving This Bug! . We love this cute little guy. There is little to "assemble." He is great to watch - in the sun or the glow of a 100W light bulb he dances. Also, he is good to learn from - if he dances out of the light he stops cold, no stored up energy. It brings giggles and enjoyment for all ages. This is the second time I bought the solar grasshopper. First for one of my kids for a birthday. Now, most of the cousins are getting one for Christmas.

Funny . It's fun but works only under direct sunlight. Does not work under artficial lightsources. Take this into consideration before you buy it.

I bought one of these cute little frightened grasshoppers through an Amazon Marketplace merchant for only ONE CENT, plus the $4.95 to ship it, so it cost me less than $5, and I thought my cats would get a big kick out of it. Which they did. They were of course, freaked out a little by it at first, batting at it with their paws, but making my LOL my butt off!
My mom, who is 61, got a kick out of it; her neighbor, also her age, thought it was pretty darn cool. Now, my husband has taken it to work with him, and all of the guys want to buy one for their grandkids, or kids, and they all think it is just the neatest thing that it is solar powered.

Lame . This had the attention of my family attention for maybe a minute. We live in the Caribbean so we have plenty of sun. It doesn't jiggle and wiggle - just a little vibrate. Even the cat wasn't interested. Ho Hum
Junk - don't waste your money . Utter crap - Bought two of these for the kids (6 & 8) for xmas. Neither worked out of the box. One had a short across the solar panel. Even when fixed, it only worked at high noon. Nothing more than a cell phone vibrator motor and tiny solar panel. The other had the same flaw, but still didn't work after repair. Not worth the cost or trouble to bother returning...
