Solarbotics Herbie the Mousebot Kit (Blue) - Please note: Requires building with tools such as needle nose pliers and a soldering iron!

Herbie the Mousebot is a 9-volt battery-powered light-following robot that loves to chase flash light beams. These little robots are so quick, you have to run to keep up to them! We've even enhanced Herbie with functional whisker and tail sensors, so he doesn't get stuck in corners or under obstacles while chasing around. If there are several Herbies in the same area, they can be even configured to chase each other!

Herbie comes as a build-it-yourself kit that does not use any microprocessors or programming - we'll supply you with all the parts and some excellent documentation to put him together. Our instructions contain many pictures and simple descriptions to make the building process easy and fun, especially for beginners. We even provide free phone/email technical support to help you complete your project.

Originally invented by Randy Sargent, Herbie was built from spare parts as an entry for a robot competition. Herbie is such an elegant, clever design using very few parts, it's been featured in as a construction project in "MAKE" Magazine. A portion of each sale is donated to the "KISS Institute for Practical Robotics", a not-for-profit organization that uses educational robotics programs to actively engage students in science, technology, engineering, math, and project management. This is an organization Randy (Herbie's "Dad") is involved with.

Solder Mousebot . Be prepared to take some time to assemble. The instructions say about 2 hours to complete, but I ended up taking 3 hours. There is quite a bit more soldering then I expected with this project, but the instructions do a great job of walking you through all the steps. If you haven't soldered before or don't have much interest in it, this might not be for you.

The mouse once assembled is VERY VERY fast and needs a good amount of space on a smooth surface. The assembling the whiskers the PCB sections together are probably the most difficult parts of the assembly. Alignment of the PCB sections is very important.

The on/off switch on ours has issues. Turning it to the on position doesn't turn it on. You have to effectively force the on switch a little bit further to the on side before it turns on. A bump while its running ends up turning it off because of the switch problem. We'll probably try to find a replacement switch to install.

Between the cost of the mouse and the shipping, the total was pretty high.

Bottom Line: Great instructions, fun project and product, but a little expensive.
