Nice quality very durable lovely toy . My 3-yr old has been glued to this ever since it arrived at our house. She is fascinated by how the stylus picks up the ball bearings & then loves using her finger to retrace the letters & push the balls back down. It's nice to see her so riveted in learning her letters & practicing how to hold & control a pencil. Like every Kid-O product we have seen, this one is beautifully made & also beautiful to look at with a nice, clean, simple design. Though it is made of plastic, it feels very satisfying in the hand, with a nice weight & sturdiness to it. I can see that this would be a great toy to take along for long trips in the car.
The only reason I reduced the number of stars rating the toy's education value from five to four is that I think this would be a much better learning tool if the magnetic stylus were triangular in shape to encourage a proper writing grip.

captivating for sure! . My 4 year old son has shown no interest in his ABC's. When I brought this home, he immediately grabbed it and it hasn't left his side for days. My 8 and 10 year old boys even like playing with this toy. It shows him which direction to write. So, it's very helpful. The only thing I don't like is on a couple of the letters is that it shows them how to draw the M and N a little weird. Overall it's a FABULOUS toy. I'm thinking about getting the lower case and numbers toy.

Not recommended . Unfortunately this toy does not help children to learn to write letters.
I bought this for my 4-year-old son because he is interested in learning to write. I thought this toy looked like a nice way to work with him on this and I liked that it was not electronic (no batteries, lights, etc.) like some others I looked at. It arrived in a really badly damaged box but the toy was still intact. However the toy itself (despite being intact and undamaged) is close to useless.
The magnets work in such a way that my son just uses the stylus to tap around in random spots on the letters in order to bring up the magnets. You don't in any way need to keep the "pen" on the surface in order for the magnets to pop up. While it is vaguely entertaining to have the magnets come up and then to push them down, there is really nothing accomplished in doing this. Moreover, the toy comes with "instructions" in the form of numbers with arrows that show you which direction to move your stylus in order to make the letters. These orders are very strange. For example, for an "M" the numbers suggest that you first make one vertical line, then make the other vertical line, and then make two diagonal lines that join in the middle. This is definitely not how most people would write the letter M. Luckily (or not) my son completely ignores these numbers as he randomly taps his pen around.
My complaint is not only that this toy will not help my son learn to write letters, however; it is also boring for a child his age. It does appear to be sturdy: but we will probably give it away quite quickly. This is definitely a disappointment and I am confused about why the other reviews were so positive. Maybe we are missing something? This is a rare miss for us as I have almost always been satisfied with toys purchased on Amazon.

3 yr old likes it - good practice . My son is a few months shy of 3 years old and this is the only product made well enough to hold up to him. We tried markers, crayons, colored pencils, tracing paper - everything. This toy is better than all the rest - it has ZERO MESS and only two parts to keep track of (just wish it had a string or something to keep the pen attached, but it's ok). VERY HAPPY we found this ad in Parents magazine!
learning to write the WRONG way! . This "educational" toy was such a disappointment! The quality is poor for the cost. There is no groove to help the young children this is intended for to keep their "pencil" on track. The magnet is too strong so the little balls lift into their place when you haven't traced over them yet. Worst of all, the handwriting strokes are incorrect. I reviewed the most common handwriting styles (Palmer, Zaner-Bloser and D'Nelian) to confirm my suspicion that the little arrows directing the strokes are not even correct for some of the letters. There is some entertainment value provided by the magnets and balls, but learning to write letters correctly with this toy would be impossible. I will be sending this back!
Perfect toy for a 3-4 year old!!! . My kids (ages 3 and 4) told me about this toy after playing with it at daycare! It's the coolest thing ever! You trace the letters with a magnetic pen and the metal balls come up and fill in the wholes in the letters (the fun part). Then when you're done, you push the balls down and start again!My kids just love this toy and I already bought another toy for my niece who is turning 4 year old in few weeks!The only negative I can say about this toy is the fact that it's easy to loose the magnetic pen. My kids tend to froget to put things back where they belong and after 1 day of playing they lost one pen... It would have been better if the pen was attached to the board by some sorts of string. But it's a minor imperfection and I guess it's my kids' fault they lost it... lol
A way to learn how to write the alphabet that really appeals to your senses! . My husband and I were fascinated when we saw these in the store. We loved playing with them. Our niece and nephew who are both three loved them and of course they sometimes go ball by ball or run the pen across the whole board, but they do trace the letters as intended for the most part. Our nephew who is in kindergarten loved using the magnatab as well. Well worth it!
So NOT educational . We purchased this at a local toy store for our 3 1/2 year old son. He absolutely loves it, but not because he's learning anything. He just likes pulling the balls up w/the magnet pen. Which, by the way, is strong enough to pull up 10-ton ball bearings, much less itty bitty ball bearings! Okay, I'm exaggerating a tad, but it is way too strong for its intended purpose. As other reviewers have stated, it pulls up multiple balls at a time. So, for my son, that totally defeats the "tracing" purpose b/c he is too busy saying "mommy, I just pulled 5 balls up at once!" {not really 5, he just uses 5 for anything more than 1 :)} The only good: it is well made (except for crazy-strong magnet pen). This, however, will be going back to our local store, and we will be getting Kido Free Form Magnatab instead. Same principal w/the magnets so kiddo will be happy, and no confusing letter tracing directions :)
2.5 Year Old LOVES this! . My son is 2.5 and plays with toy every day. It's a fun, interactive way to learn your letters and has gone a long way in inspiring an interest in learning to write. True, some of the letter suggest a weird order, but he doesn't follow those, usually I show him and he copies what I do. It's a study toy that has been dropped and tossed around. No batteries! I do wish the pen was attached somehow, but we haven't lost it, YET! It's definitely an educational toy with no gimmicks or gadgets, so it doesn't keep his attention for too long. And the magnets pop up pretty easy, so it's not a flawless tool to teach them to draw correctly, but it is certainly a good foundation that my son likes playing with. Good enough for me! I just saw they have a lower case one, so we'll definitely be ordering that.
Cons Review
Pen too strong . The concept of this toy is absolutely fantastic. I also love the start white design with red letters and the red stylus. The magnet in this pen is just way too strong for it to function usefully. When the kids try to use it it pulls beads up in all surrounding areas regardless of how careful they are. Even with direct adult assistance it is impossible to not pick up extra beads so they just end up getting annoyed and would rather use dry erase markers or do regular worksheets. It just does not function like it should because of the magnet being way too strong. It's a shame because I really wanted to love this toy. I cannot even do it myself without pulling up extra beads. It is also impossible for my daughter or any of her friends to get the stylus out of the board themselves then you have the additional issue of the fact that they cannot get it back in AND it is not attached by a strong to it gets lost easily.
