They are actually concretions (from Utah) that are nearly identical to those found on Mars by the Mars rover "Opportunity." Scientists named them "Martian Blueberries." Since they need water to form, their discovery is an important proof that water existed on Mars. These specimens, about 25 million years old, are unique to the red rock formations of Southern Utah and to the red planet Mars. The rover Opportunity found them on a broad plain, Meridiani Planum.
