GREAT Product . The Purpose
I received a tiny version of a solar battery pack about the size of a couple packs of gum recently and was surprised at how many times I used it. After awhile I realized I wanted something a little more robust so after my research I decided on the IceTech i9005.
The Purchase
My main deciding points for the IceTech over the many others out there were:
- Price
- Ability to charge the batter with the sun from 0% to 100% (Most can only sun charge 50-100% of the pack's charge)
- A nickel metal hydride battery instead of a nicad
- A comparably large battery capacity of 2850mah
- You can charge the internal pack and a device at the same time with the solar panel active
The Receipt
It came packaged in a pegboard hanging type retail packaging like something you would see at Sam's Club or Costco. After opening it I was impressed with the construction and feel. A rubberized housing that keeps the unit from slipping around on whatever surface you put it on and since I plan to give it a lot of car dash time I think is going to work great.
Switches have a good positive feel. The plugs, jacks and switches are all neatly arranged on one end of the device.
The lid opens easy, fits well and has a positive detent on closed to keep it closed.
The solar panels came protected with clear membrane over the top. Instruction manual was well written. You get a AC adaptor, all cables required and the a variety of tips.
The variety of tips seem to cover A LOT of devices. I only have a few devices but the one tip I found missing was the newer micro USB for my Kindle. I'm going to try and contact the company for one or just buy a mini to micro adaptor.
The First Use
I'm not a patient person but I read the suggestion and have experience with break in of nimh cells so I decided to follow the directions and charge the pack the first two times using the AC Adaptor.
First charge went well at about 6 hours to get green light. Decided I would just dump the pack overnight with the included LED light. Great idea except in the morning after 8 hours the LED light was still bright as ever! I know an LED doesn't draw much current but I was impressed. Off to work and I plugged in a USB incandescent light which should draw quite a bit more juice than the LED. 3 hours and it's still on!. The charge indicator is red so I'm getting there but not yet.
Thus far I'm very impressed. The only nit picks would I would like some type of case for the unit, the tips and the cords. Not a big deal it looks the same size as my son's DS game console so I'm going to look for one of his old cases. Oh yea and I wish Ice-Tech would throw in the micro USB tip. Again MINOR MINOR nit picks.
More to come as I drain the battery a second time then let the sun take over.
UPDATE 6-13-11
The first two battery drains were TOUGH! It took forever with a USB snake light plugged in the voltage selector cranked up to 9V. That ran for 48 hours then when that bulb died I switched to the included LED light and that lasted another day and a half. Impressive to say the least and this could be a go to emergency light with that longevity.
The second charge up from A/C went well and on the way to work this morning I put a full charge in my Bluetooth headset and gave my Blackberry a boost before I just ran out of travel time. Today I left the panels open on my dash to recharge it fully.
I called iceTech customer service and they were very helpful with getting me a ipod touch tip and I'm excited to get that this week. A+++ for their responsiveness.
I did remove the clear plastic protector sheets from the two solar panels. I THINK they are supposed to come off as they had bubbles in them like you see on most phone screen when you get them. Protection in the manufacturing process and shipping I suspect. Well this was a little tricky and after a while I figure out to push down on the adges of the panel where it goes under the black case and that gave space for the clear plastic protector to slide out instead of tearing.
The only nit pick for this review is maybe ask for a slightly stronger detent on the output voltage selector switch. Not a big deal at all if you take your time and pay attention to what you're doing. Most everything is going to be 5V so I don't see myself changing the switch very often.

SOLAR i-9005: Solar Battery Reviews
i9005 solar . After doing some pretty extensive research on portable solar chargers i came across the iceTech i9005 and was impressed. The 2800mAh internal battery is over twice the capacity of my smartphone's (HTC Incredible) allowing me to go 3 full battery cycles without having to worry about finding an outlet ..and thats assuming theres no sun during that time!
the device itself is pretty sturdy and looks rugged enough for you not to have to worry too much about its safety (i throw mine in my book-bag with my textbooks and laptop and take it to class every day). The adjustable voltage level lets me charge multiple devices with it (camera's, friends cell phones etc.) and the LED flashlight that comes built in is bright and saps very little battery.. when training my battery after purchase (fully charging it then fully draining it twice, as it says in the instruction manual) i left the flashlight on and left the room for the day only to return with it still on.. and thats with the internal battery already at approx 50%! it took a few more days of the same treatment to finally drain the battery.
The only issue is when i originally got the item it didn't have the adapter for my phone (i should have looked more carefully at the tips that came with it so my fault). upon emailing them, they offered to send me the appropriate tip i needed free of charge, talk about customer service!
Long story short, great product, excellent service.. Recommended

SOLAR i-9005: Solar Battery Opinions
SOLAR i9005 . I have taken the i9005 on backpacking trips into Yosemite and on long driving trips and it has work marvelously with my iPhone 3GS. With a mini-USB connector I also keep my TruePower battery pack for my iPhone fully charged, as well. My only concern is its structural durability, though I have not tested this, other than it sliding off a rock and falling about two feet, with no damage. The ground was very soft. Highly recommended.

The included tips should be updated but overall everything worked as advertised, when driving in the car I toss the charger onto the back window ledge and let it keep its charge from back there if I need it I can easily grab it.
The one item I think the charger needs needs is a case/skin, the back is a finger magnet and will eventually get scratched the top is framed in plastic. Being that I like keep my stuff in good condition a case/skin would be an excellent addition, especially one with a loop in the center to attach to a bag that would keep it in place while charging in the sun instead of swinging around.

Good Product . I bought this product for the purpose of charging my phone and iPod. I received this product and the adapter used for charging the phone was damaged and I could not get my iPod to charge. I emailed customer service explained my issue and was sent a replacement for the damaged adapter and the Apple iPod adapter at no charge. CUSTOMER SERVICE! This unit charges quickly and has a handy LED light built into the side, Very Bright! that way you are not stuck in the dark. this is a durable unit and is a good size. I would recoment this unit, just be aware that you need to purchase a seperate adapter for use with Apple products.

Cons Review
truly sucks . Dos not charge ipod. Charged phone a few times and stopped working altogether.

Does not charge my phone . I received one of these for Christmas. It refuses to charge my iPhone 3GS, despite the box saying it charges "I-Phones". The hinge does not hold the solar panels open at any angle other than 180 degrees. It claims to charge "Game stations" but does not come with a DS or PSP charger; the website offers a "Nintendo DS mini-USB" adapter, but the DS does not use mini-USB, and I certainly don't want to take a chance on this company.
Piece of garbage . After being told by the company that it would charge my iPhone, ipods etc. I went ahead and purchased this charger. Well, to my dismay it will not charge any of my iPhones or iPods. I have tried multitudes of cables with no luck. I have tried to contact their customer support several times burt to no avail. They will not respond to phone calls, only emails. I tried to return it but was told over the phone that I needed to email a request for an RMA. Never got one. At least i had the good sense to call my credit card company, dispute the charge and have it removed from my bill. It does make and excellent paperweight. Save your money and look elsewhere. If I could have given it no stars I would have.
