Finally a Magnetic Product that Stands the Test . Over the past two years I have used several different brands of magnetic spheres. Some were cheap and some were par for the course on price. Some were what I considered name brands (based on their marketing efforts) and some were non-name brands. With my use of these products over the last two years I have found that Zen Magnets have by far the best quality and highest usability of all the brands. Here are the facts based on what I have experienced with Zen Magnets vs. other brands with respect to the actual product, the packaging, and the accessories included in the packaging.
Status Quo (similarities I found between all brands and Zen Magnets):
-Zen Magnets are 5mm in mean diameter (seems to be an industry standard now)
-Zen Magnets (a full set of 216) weigh the same as other common name brands (3.7 oz)
-Zen Magnets are solid neodymium with a nickel finish (similar to the primary products of other brands)
-Zen Magnets come with a high quality velvet carrying case (similar to other brands, although case type differs brand to brand)
-Zen Magnets come with an instruction manual/how to pamphlet (similar to other brands)
Above and beyond with the Zen Set (what I found different with Zen Magnets):
-Zen Magnets come with 6 spare magnets in case you lose a few (unlike other brands who make you buy extras in quantities of 10 or 20 if you misplace even a single magnet)

I have seen chipping, low magnetism, flaws in the shape, and incompatibility set to set. However, after using Zen Magnets for over 3 months I saw none of that. In fact a set I had bought around thanksgiving integrated perfectly with a set I just recently bought. Furthermore, the finish and shape of Zen Magnets is, dare I say it, flawless. Each and every piece is a perfect mirror sphere. With respect to use, I have not had any problems making any shape. I cannot say the same for other brands. With some other brands the balls don't line up quite right (either due to imperfections in the shape or differences in magnetic force sphere to sphere) and the shapes seem to just repel no matter how I try and manipulate the spheres. To date I have not had this problem with my Zen Magnets. Finally, the accessories that come with the Zen Set are high quality and useful in both creating shapes quickly and efficiently and showing off your art to others.
Bottom line - I highly recommend Zen Magnets and the Zen Set!

That is, imperfect extras are added to the list of cons, despite the primary components being better. So the mediocre pocket knife ends up having better ratings than the similarly priced top notch epic pocket knife that includes a weak toothpick.
There are simply no magnet spheres of higher quality, consistency and longevity than zen magnets. I'm stunned that there are 3 star reviews for this product. Zen's construction guide alone, is worth the price difference, and makes the buckyball guide look comical enough for a yakety sax soundtrack. The PVC card and steel plate are both beautiful, useful, and found nowhere else. "But oh my, the steel plate is scratched? Minus two stars?" Rediculous logic. My steel plate was not scratched, for your information.
But take all these anonymous anecdotal amazon reviews with a grain of salt. If you really want irrefutable comparison, the most valid judges are the passionate hobbyist nerds who spend hours upon hours exploring the possible builds. Compare the quality on the buckyball facebook page with the zen magnet gallery or the magnet sphere commons (open to all brands). Check out nanodot's dotpedia and see how much zen paraphernalia you'll find in the backgrounds. I'll give you one guess as to which brand receives the most love by the nerds who care the most.

Excellent! . This is an excellent product. The case is really nice, being wooden, and the little cards inside really make it easy to "slice" through the magnets without damaging the structure you've created. We're really proud of this product! Nice job, Zen!
Endless Creative Fun! . I really want to give this product 5 stars but my only issue is that I bought the gift box one over the normal one was because of the box... Unfortunately the box easily breaks (the "hinge" is the thin layer of paint) and it did break. Something easily solved with a strip of sturdier packing tape. But even with that, the box is small so you have to flatten your magnets down before putting them in the pouch and then back inside the box, though it's still easy for them not to fit and therefor, the lid close. It's unfortunate the box broke. It's a nice matte black box that displays nicely.
Now the great stuff: Super fun! Easy to learn designs. Magnets are indeed very strong!

Zen at your desk . I purchased these as i work in cubical heaven and a few of my fellow drones have these and they looked like fun I did lots of research on which one would be the best "for me" and found my answer ZEN magnets!!! these little magnetic balls have been used for days and still are as shinny as when i opened my box. And yes i know there is some naysayers out there that are like "my box broke don't buy these" it is the packaging get over it! you bought the magnets just be happy they came in a cool box filled with useful things. With that being said there is a little card that comes with these little guys and at first i thought it was just a business card.Boy was i wrong this card is used for dividing the ball by cutting them apart. which can be very useful when you are making a perfect ball and need to pull a few off that are out of line.

If you are going to gift this to someone - order it - have it sent to you - reglue the box together so it looks better then send it to whoever you are gifting it to. The actual contents are top quality. The card/separator, the metal plate is very nice with etched design, a lil package of 6 extra balls, cleaning cloth, directions and a little pouch that you can fit it all in (although the instructions say not to put the metal plate in - I do it anyway. I think it's to keep the metal plate from messing up the pouch /shrug.
So, I've had a blast with these so far, sending a gift pack of this to my pop for fathers day.

Definitely a great choice . I got these for my boyfriend, since he had hinted he wanted something like this for his birthday. He loves them, and even better, I love them. They're very nice quality, very durable, and the case they come in is very nicely made and beautiful. Definitely worth the price, since these are (from what I've heard) the higher end of magnets. I have some similar to this which aren't as nice and aren't as strong.
Box is just a package . Not quite sure why everyone make a big deal about this products box... In reality it's just the package. Most competitors use plastic that you have to cut off and throw out. The fact is that the actual magnets are awesome and worth the price I paid alone. Then you have to add in the accessories ta boot. Awesome set and totally worth the investment. Don't listen to the negative reviews or the ones that take off point for the packaging (which I might add looks pretty cool). Get this set if you want quality magnets.
