Practical Soldering Project Kit just right . I bought this as a gift for my 13 year old, to get him interested in electronics. The kit instructions are well written: they give practical advice, and two example circuits. The circuits, though simple, gave my son a sense of accomplishment when finish. This kit helps develop those skills needed for doing more advanced kits and projects. It's a great way, at a low cost/risk, to get the amateur hobbyist into electronics.

He had never soldered before and this kit taught him the basics of printed circuit assembly. Immediately after he finished this "soldering course" he was helping me. Soldering is not hard at all, but it's great having something like this to teach the correct terminology and techniques.

First toy that got me interested in Electrical Engineering . My parents were kind enough to buy this kit for me 15 years ago, and since then i've grown up and gotten an electrical engineering degree/career. It's a simple and wonderful way to introduce anyone to the basics of electronics - both in the activity of soldering, and in the high level understanding of resistors, capacitors, etc. A worthy investment in ones future.
Simple fun effective . I bought a couple of these to teach my ten-year old twins soldering skills and we had a ball. They learned to identify components, apply solder safely, test for unintended bridges, de-soldering, and basic electronic concepts. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect was reading color codes on resistors and then confirming their specs against a multimeter. There are enough exercises to develop a beginner's confidence with an iron quickly (although we used better rosin-core solder than comes with the kit), and one guy decided to omit the last step where you upgrade two resistors to modulate the circuit's oscillation: he liked the faster sound in contrast to his brother's board. All in all, these simple boards provided an inexpensive weekend of instructional fun.
Great way to learn to solder . I bought this for my 7yr-old so he could learn to solder and end up with something that would interest him. The device has two LEDs that flash alternately, and a siren that oscillates. It comes with everything you need but a soldering iron.The thing I loved about this was the practice pads on the back, and the very large, widely spaced pads throughout the board. With the practice pads, your kid can easily get the hang of what it means to solder and how it should go before they have to feel like they're starting on the project. Then, once they start on the project, there is plenty of space for them to build their confidence. The kit was put together well, easy to use and understand. For older kids with longer attention spans, the kit comes with a booklet with quite a bit of information, and a quiz. If you have a kid that is maybe 10-14, this would be for them.The one thing that bothered me about the kit was the lack of an on-off switch- so to stop the noise/lights you have to pull the battery, which annoyed my son as well. We'll add one on of course, but I think it would be the perfect addition to make the kit complete.
Simple and Cheap Way To learn Soldering . This is a simple kit that will introduce you to soldering while allowing you to avoid further breaking anything that you are trying to fix. Its is very easy to assemble the kit with the instructions provided and you will be able to do some simple soldering as I did when I removed my HVAC controller from my 1997 corvette and resoldered several loose tiny diodes that were not passing current and causing the display to gradually dim to where it could not be seen. It worked perfectly for a while but not so much anymore - but the point is that I was able to successfully solder them after first using this kit to figure it out. Go ahead and buy it and get your feet wet before you attempt to build a robot or something.
Exactly the same thing as Elenco Amerikit Learn to Solder Kit! . I ordered this kit along with the Elenco Amerikit Learn to Solder Kit to get some practice on a couple of projects before tackling some bigger projects involving LED Christmas lights. Come to find out, this is exactly the same product except that the Elenco Amerikit comes with a soldering iron and snippers. No where in the description of this item does it talk about building the siren and light and the description that is there is shady at best. Ironically enough, Amazon even suggests bundling the two items together with a solder sucker as a complete package. Why the heck would I need to do the same project twice? Misleading and frustrating. One kit is going back!
Great Practice . A lot of people have bought these for kids but it's great for adults too.I've been getting into electronics as a new wintertime hobby and I bought this just to practice soldering. The kit comes with detailed instructions that are easy to follow. The parts are very well labeled. The kit appears to be targeted to the classroom environment but I just did this in my garage. It took me a couple of hours to assemble and that included me taking lots of time to read and reread instructions. An experienced person could have probably done it in 30 minutes, but then again, why would an experience person bother? Unfortunately I could not get the siren working (I might have burned up the 555 I/C timer by applying too much heat). I did however get the alternating LED flash working. I also bought a slightly different Elenco soldering practice kit for additional learning.Practice makes perfect. I'm far from perfect but this kit has put me on the right path. For the price it's great practice. I'd rather screw this up than a real project with more expensive components.
Excellent kit! . I'm nearly 31 and used to solder all the time, got my HAM license when I was 15 and did a lot of my own radio repairs, however I hadn't soldered anything in 8 years or so and really hadn't touch resistors or any of these components in a long time. I saw this kit and thought it would be fun to get back into electronics and figured this was the perfect entrance back into that world. The kit has nearly everything you need. I found I needed a pair of needle nose pliers which the kit didn't include and a 9-volt battery to power the gizmo but the kit has everything else you need. soldering iron, solder, wire snips, Resistors, led's, etc. It took me around 30 minutes to put it all together. What I liked was this kit actually has a practice zone on the PC board so you can hone your solder skills on an actual board without fear of messing up. They have you make some brief solders, do a "repair" with a piece of wire, make a bridge and then clear the bridge. The kit really is very well done and the directions are clear, plus the board clearly lays out what goes where.When I thought I was done I connected a 9 volt battery and was expecting it all to work, the lights flashed but I couldn't get any sound out of it. After checking each solder connection I realized I left off a tiny little piece, once i soldered that last piece on and put the battery back on it worked perfectly.... and then I read where you had to de-solder and re-solder a different resister to "fix it" which is all part of the directions. The kit is excellent, I enjoyed it and will be picking up more of the Elenco project kits for soldering. It reminded me how much fun this stuff can be, and when you are done you have something to show for it. True the end gadget you make isn't that useful, but it's fun none the less, educational and worth the money.
