Suggested age needs to be older . I bought this for my smart 7 year old (he often loves toys for the 8 & up age suggestion ) Well I believe the age on this should be 10 & up unless played with an adult as a cooperative project. My husband is a 54 year old mechanical engineer & he had trouble with a project. The diagrams are VERY small. You can hardly see them & have to put your face down on the paper to really look. The diagrams are poor. (they should do close ups on insertion & connection areas, but instead it's a distant shot of the entire project) Some pieces are VERY hard to take back out if you mess up (they provide a tool to yank them back out) There aren't any extra pieces so if you lose one- many project is out forever.(such as the tiny little pieces used to build a belt)
My son & I can complete projects together. However he gets bored waiting for me to figure it out & he wants to do it on his own. I let him complete the steps he can figure out only offering myself as a back up, but he feels like a failure then because he has to ask for my help.

Pretty good little product . I deal in teaching science concepts to children of all ages, so I pick up stuff like this when I can. I grabbed this item from a deal site a few weeks ago and played with it with my 7 year old nephew. The construction is kind of like off brand Legos or kinex, but a little more difficult. However, I expect any patient-ish 7 year old could easily do it alone. It might work best with kids slightly older. One thing I really liked was that even only a few steps into building the race car my nephew saw how the gears were working together and had that "Eureka" look on his face. Finishing construction and then playing with the car was icing on the cake. Beyond that it can be used to teach the idea of energy and work. There are some draw backs, the kit can be a little challenging for younger less technically oriented minds and therefore may require some participation from adults. I feel it is an excellent kit with this in mind, it is a good way to get kids engaged in the technical mind set (with help) and that sets the stage for the skills to do kits like this on their own in the future.
tl dr: A very good kit, but for the younger kids plan on building the first few things with them to help them understand and get used to it.
