Really works . It's a little awkward trying to fit the cardboard into the slots on the base but really didn't take too long to assemble. The liquid that goes on the base does not smell funny. We did put a plastic tray under the base just in case of spills or accidents (none happened but just to be safe.) It was fun doing this with my kids and watching the progress of the garden "growth" over one day and a night's time. Our garden is very close to as full as the picture shows so it really does work! It's really pretty and satisfying as you can start seeing your results in a short period of time.
Poorly designed . We had a lot of lucky with the Christmas tree from ToySmith and my daughter enjoyed it, so while doing some last minute Christmas shopping I picked this up. It was VERY difficult to get any of the pieces to stay in place, and I LOVE to put things together. Even my husband had problems getting anything to stay in place. We finally resorted to using scissors to get things to be the correct size. The tray is SUPER flimsy (not at all like the hard plastic from the ToySmith Christmas tree), the grass strips are way to long, the base of the trees is too wide to fit in the circle, the slots in the two tree pieces are cut wide so they collapse and do not stay together, the mountain does not fit the couture of the hole provided no matter how you fold it, troughs for the liquid are too shallow, and the whole tray bows so even on our flat countertop the pieces fall over. We put it together (after about 30 minute of trimming and manipulating) on the counter before bed, poured the liquid in the best we could, and went to bed, when I woke up both of the trees had fallen over. ARGG! The flip side is that it did grow, but the snow is not on the top of the mountain (only the lower 2/3), which does not make sense and the middle part of the garden did not grow at all even though I made sure all the piece had adequate liquid. I think I will stick with the ToySmith version. The tray is hard plastic, and the is a perfect x cut in it to put the tree in so it stay. That product can be easily moved - not true of this one. It is headed for the trash. :(
Fun but flimsy . My son got one of these for a gift. The whole thing is unbelievably flimsy. None of the paper parts fits well into the plastic tray and I had to trim some pieces with scissors to get them to fit right. The crystals do blossom quickly, and my kids had a blast watching it change throughout the day. Put it in a spot you plan to keep it, because once it's set up and crystallizing you can't move it without breaking it.
too flimsy . This item is too flimsy. If you pick it up to move it, parts fall over. The paper parts do not fit into the base well enough to keep them standing. Also, what grows is like fluff. Years ago when you did this, it took longer, but the growth was hard and lasted. It is very pretty if it survives until completion, but doesn't last very long.
Cons Review
Cool but Delicate . This was a cool product. Unfortunately, it was not in very good quality. There was a hole in one of the places where you put the magic water, and the liquid leaked out of there, dehydrating the cherry blossom tree. Also, it was hard for everything to keep it's balance. The mountain also did not completely crystal. If it was even slightly moved, it would lose a couple crystals. It was interesting, but not as nice as it should have been.
Fun while it lasts . Our five-year-old daughter loved watching this grow! I wish we had told her up front that it only lasts for a short period of time because we keep asking about throwing it away and she doesn't want us to. One piece of advice: "plant" it in a place where you expect to keep it because it is not at all portable (the trees and and grass fall over).
