DuneCraft Science Fun Kits Reviews - Unreal Upchuck 2 Bird Throw Up Pellets by DuneCraft Create Mouse and Starling Skeletons From Puke! Fun and Educational Upchuck Pellets found in the wild are produced and regurgitated, most commonly by owls, but also by hawks, eagles, and other raptors, which swallow their prey whole or in large pieces. The captor's stomach breaks down what is needed and eliminates the rest in the form of a pellet. The resulting pellets are masses of bones, teeth, and feathers, wrapped in hair and fur. These pellets contain virtually complete skeletons of the animals which the bird of prey ate for a meal the night before the pellet was formed. Upchuck Pellet are different than anything else in that they are 100% synthetic, making them completely safe and sanitary to dissect. You will always have an entire skeleton with the included pellets! Plus, you don't even have to wear gloves to dissect them. This educational and fun kit comes with two Upchuck Pellets, a dissetion tray, a small magnifier, and a bone sorting chart. 8 and up.

Fake bird barf = real entertainment... sort of . I buy little science kits for a fun activity for my niece when I babysit her. It gives us something to keep busy with, and hopefully, she learns a thing or two in the process. Though the kit I bought looks identical to what is pictured in this product, what I bought was packaged and marketed as "unreal upchuck!", which is what initially caught my eye in the store where I picked it up. I knew my niece would get a kick out of the gross-out angle of it, so I plunked down my money and hauled it off to babysit with.
First, this isn't real bird barf -which is a good thing. Now, I've never actually picked through authentic bird vomit myself, so I can't really speak to how accurate a representation this kit is. Though I have to say that even my little niece wasn't buying the idea that bird barf is at all similar to what this kit presents, which is poorly cast plastic rodent and bird skeletons swaddled in what appears to be clothes dryer lint.
None-the-less, we dug through and picked out the "bones". Our kit came with a starling pellet and a mouse pellet. The starling was more or less complete in terms of having all the bones, but the mouse was nowhere near complete. I think the intricacy of the bones made for a difficult casting process, because of the bones we did have, a lot of them were missing parts that you could tell just didn't get plastic flow to them in the casting phase of production. Additionally, the plastic bones are incredibly brittle and snap very easily.
Using superglue, I assembled the starling skeleton, though it was missing several of its ribs. While I was doing that, it occurred to me that as long as the bird barf is fake anyway, why not enlarge the skeletons so the pieces get cast decently, or better yet, enlarge them and add joints so they can be snapped together for assembly after extraction from the bird barf.
Considering this kit consists of maybe a few cents worth of materials, and 50 cents to a dollar worth of production/manufacturing costs in casting the bones -would it really be so terrible if buyers got a little more for our money?
The kit was fun, though what you get for your money isn't much. I don't regret buying it, though I wouldn't buy it again now that I know I can just wad up a plastic skeleton in a fistful of clothes dryer lint and have the same thing for a fraction of the cost (and it will smell downy-fresh to boot!).
To be honest, the best part of this kit was seeing the look of repulsion and disgust that crossed my sister's face when I showed up at her house to babysit her daughter and handed her the "Unreal Upchuck!" box after announcing that Auntie Val's fun babysitting activity involved picking bones out of bird barf.
