Precision Gyroscope Reviews - Perform gravity defying tricks with the Tedco Precision Gyroscope! -- This is the most precision designed toy gyroscope on the market. You can perform amazing tricks with this gyroscope, and it's easy! -- To begin, simply hold the frame, and thread the included cord through the gyroscope axle. Wind the cord around the axle while turning it with your thumb and index finger. With a firm grip, pull the cord away from the gyroscope. Hold the frame and push the included T-handle starter strap through the frame and the wheel. Making sure the strap aligns with the gear of the axle, pull the strap away from the gyroscope. -- Tiny ball bearings and near perfect balance keep the gyroscope spinning for several minutes. Durable enough for classroom demonstration.

This Gyro is an excellent classic toy . This Gyroscope is the high Quality Toy that used to be purchased at the local mall or the educational store. Now they have become hard to find. This Gyro is durable and comes with the string and the rip cord to start it with. It is an excellent tool for explaining motion and the physics behind the force that balances. I highly recommend this toy.
Precision Gyroscope Reviews
alternative to string for spinning g'scope very effective . this is a high quality (higher than the archetypal brass and red colored gyroscope) gyroscope. it appears well balanced but best of all it has two methods of spinning it up. First is the traditional string that has to be wound. second, is a plastic t-handle with small notches along the length. the t-handle is fed into the gyrosope with its matching teeth, sort of like enmeshing gears. my 3 year old can get a good enough grip on the t-handle to spin it up whereas he could never use the string. Overall a great toy.
Precision Gyroscope Opinions
Right idea but could be better . The "old" gyroscopes from my day seem to do better (1960's). I wished it would stay at higher rate of speed to show the effects of the gyroscope better.
Excellent For The price . I agree with the one reviewer on the need for oiling the bearings as received and suspect that this is true of most toy gyroscopes. Point contact type bearings definitely require lubrication occasionally to give decent life. This unit claims ball bearings but they are molded into the rotor shaft so have been heated up during the plastics molding process. Not good for the original lubrication IMO.

I cannot agree with the reviewer who speaks of gimbals though as this is not a gimballed gyroscope. Amazon does offer gimballed gyroscopes intended for use in engineering and physics teaching but they are considerably more expensive, starting at about $35, with almost all metal construction and going up to about $140 for Amazon's offerings. They are also not suitable for some of the things that this toy gyroscope is good for as typically true gimbal mounted gyroscopes do not include a guard ring around the rotor assembly which all the toy versions have. I believe that the reviewer was referring to the frame and bearings. As noted above a bit of oil helps a lot and will probably extend the life expectancy but there is apparently no adjustment available for rotor end play in the frame.

After oiling it runs well so far for up to a couple of minutes by my timing. That may extend slightly as the bearings break-in or I gain in experience with starting it.

I wish that the documentation of experiments to try shipped with the gyroscope had more than the four examples included. Even a toy like this can be a learning device.

Keep in mind that as a ball bearing supported rotor gyroscope, bearing damage is very likely if it is dropped. The only other ball bearing gyroscopes currently on the market, both a lot more expensive, specifically warn of this hazard in their documentation.
Lasted One Day . While my son and I were both excited to have this new toy. It broke in one day. First the krank that you pull wore out (the teeth) so you couldn't spin it as fast....then the plastic circle with the ring got off balance.

Not worth the money.

Pretty disappointing.
Needed some oil at first but works great! . Got this for Christmas (Yes I'm a grown up kid). Worked good for a few spins, then started making a horrid sound and spinning everything, which a proper gyroscope shouldn't do. To fix this, I got out some household 3-in-1 oil and oiled the top and bottom where the metal met the plastic. Huge improvement, even from what I was getting out of the box.

I timed it, and my unit (after oiling) will stay up on the included pedestal for nearly 4 minutes using the string. With the pull cord, it's shorter, at around 2 1/2 minutes. You'll find with the pull cord the gears just can't handle a strong pull and slips some, whereas the string has no option to slip.

I'd definitely recommend this for kids and adults alike, I've had other gyroscopes and they don't stay up like this one!
Gyroscope . Not as solidly and well made as I had hoped. The gymbals seem not quite tight enough, and the motion seems rattly and not smooth enough as a result. I like the little strap to get it started - seems better than old-fashioned string.
Awesome . I have always thought gyroscopes were cool, but I have never owned one. I find the square colored grip on this one makes it a little easier to hold when starting the spin, and the stand and string are just two more added bonuses. on the top point (or bottom, depending on how you hold it :-D) there is a slit where you can balance the gyroscope on the string, that is a lot of fun. But overall it seems sturdy and I really enjoy it. :-)
Awesome! . If you hated the old original gyroscope, you will love this. There is no more winding a string and pulling. You just plug in the T-rip cord and pull it and it spins nicely for about a minute. Contrary to other reviews, so far there has been no 'gear-skipping' when using the rip cord. And I pull hard.
I highly recommend getting this. It's fun to play on your inside palm or the outside.

Cons Review
Not easy to spin up . This gyro is a lovely toy, but found it difficult to spin-up using the geared plastic pull cord. It tended to 'skip' gears and slide if pulled too vigorously, so left gyro with low spin up, which quickly spins down. Trying demos as pictured, like one gyro balanced on the other's axis, lasted a few seconds. Tried pulling with string, not much better results, so kind of disappointed. Though, it's still a pretty toy.
