Excellent fun robotic toy but only if you can afford to keep it running... . I'm a 20 year old man who has always had an interest in robotics and steampunk things. So when I was trudging through the toy section of my Walmart and saw this neat Hexbug Spider I impulse bought one and hoped for the best. My hopes were met! This thing is neat... It is a two channel remote control creature with a very unique walking motion. If you or your kid are bored of remote control cars, helicopters, and planes, you may want to give Hexbug and their things a look. Spiders have 8 legs and this only has 6, but who cares? Also worth mentioning is that whichever way the little red eye of the Spider(which glows when the head turns...very cool) is facing is the direction the Spider itself will go. This is great because it means the Spider can make very sharp turns so don't worry about 8 year old Timmy crashing it or driving it off the tabletop. The durability of the Spider is very high since my klutzy self dropped it while carrying it a few times and no damage so that's good. Another good thing and slightly educational about it is that the internal wiring and motors on the Hexbug spider are kind of visible making children wonder how these work, making for some(with luck of course) future engineers and robotic experts.BUT... There are unfortunately some negatives amidst all these positives. For one, The Spider sells for about 25 to 30 bucks. That can be expensive to some, but if you really want it like me, you'd put the money down. However, the biggest problem is the Batteries. AARRRGGHH The Batteries! The Spider itself runs off 3 AG13 Button cell batteries and the remote runs off of 2 button cell batteries. This is not a good thing since these batteries can be expensive in the long run and most stores only sell 2 or 3 packs of them, and even then they are silver oxide batteries and the Spider doesn't seem to like those... because the instructions say alkaline only. I was almost losing it by the time I found the correct kind to use... but I'm gonna give you a hint for reading this so you the lucky reader don't have to suffer as i did. If you go to a website called 24hourbatteries.com, they sell alkaline button cells for very cheap since I bought 100 for 25 bucks! So there. Problem solved. But if you don't know about the website, the problem with batteries might begin to weigh on you, so I have to subtract one star. If you don't think you'd be able to afford it, try the Hexbug Inchworm, Crab, Nano, Larva, Original, or Scarab(Scarabs are only at RadioShack). If you don't care or are gonna try 24hourbatteries, buy this Spider NOW!!! It is too much fun to pass up even if you are an adult.

AWESOME . For all of you who think the batteries died immediately....we bought this and LOVE it. The reason it appears the battery died is after 15 or so, it is designed to shut off by itself to SAVE the battery. So, you have to push the switch on the spider to "off", then back to A or B, whichever the remote is set to. Then, it works perfectly. Give it a try and see how much fun it is after that! Enjoy!! only reason it is 4 stars is it could be a little less expensive.
HEXBUG Hexbug Spider (colors may vary) Opinions
Hexbug happiness . My six year old grandson loved them. We bought a couple of them so that he could share with his siblings and friends (bug competition seemed to be the thing). They were delivered promptly and worked fine. The spider is a remote-controlled "walker". We also bought some non-controlled Nano "wigglers", and some non-controlled "walkers". The kids seemed to enjoy them all.
The habitat for the "wigglers" is an amazing piece of engineering - very well done.
Only spider I like . My 8 year old loves this spider robot. It's fun, educational and it drives our cats nuts. It took no time to get out of the box and was on the floor in minutes.
Cute toy . It works best on a low nap rug---which means it's not that much fun on the wood floors, or bed, or table where the boys want to play with it. Because of its restrictions, it doesn't get played with as much as they originally wanted to play with it. I'm guessing rubber feet on its leg tips would solve the problem. Expensive for a something that gets the playtime of a novelty toy. The other Hex bugs get played with more--ant and crab--but they don't have the always "revered" remotes.
It looks cool but somewhat lame . My son paid over $30 for this toy, and was so excited to get it. Then he opened it. The thing barely moves, and only moves on hard surfaces. After about 3 days of use the batteries died, and now I am trying to figure out how to replace them. They are not normal batteries. I am not really sure of the point of this toy. It moves via the remote control, but goes very slowly.
Hexbug Spider . This toy is really fun. I bought it as a stocking stuffer. My boys really liked it. My only complaint is that the remote is so small, we loose it all the time!
Awesome toy . My kids love this and it's really neat. It's movement is what's so great about it. The top turns in a circle so you can turn it any number of degrees and it will then walk it that new direction. The only thing wrong about it is that it's a spider but has 6 legs. My 7 yr. old noticed that right away.
Hexbug products . This toy doesn't last very long. Batteries run out quickly and the bugs seem to fall apart easily. My grandson no longer plays with it. Not a very good buy.
Cool toy! . I bought the Hexbug spider after my daughter played with another friend's hexbug during a playdate. She loves it and plays with it often.
