Very nice effect in the dark . The picture is of this globe in daylight. It takes full light to be able to see the writing and constellation lines of this globe. Being only five inches in diameter I doubt anyone would actually use this as a reference to study the constellations. That said, when illuminated in a dark room this globe casts off a very cool pattern of amber dots from the 'holes' in the coating representing constellation stars. I have this, another model of constellation globe and two illuminated earth globes on a digital timer (along with Uncle Milton's "Moon In My Room" with the guts ripped out and replaced with LED bulbs on the wall). They all run on LEDs and use less than 10 watts total, which is one small issue with this globe as it's so small it uses a very unusual incandescent bulb (even smaller than candelabra base) that would be impossible to replace with LED and will no doubt be a chore to replace when it burns out. Still energy usage has to be minimal, and I've got it on the top shelf above my desk where it casts its star pattern around my LED Moon. Quite satisfied.
