Doesn't help with speed but kinda fun . I originally purchased this to help my 6 year old to drill her addition facts but liked the fact that she could do multiplication and division later with the same toy. I ended up returning it and getting the Math Mat because this toy while fun doesn't really help with speed. The way it works is an equation comes on the screen and then the number buttons start lighting up, you have to WAIT till the correct number lights up, hit it, and then hit enter (you could hit clear if you accidentally hit the wrong button). It seems there is alot of waiting involved for the correct number to light up. It seems well made and should last a while but we wanted speed drills.

Learning Resources Light 'n' Strike Math Reviews
My son liked it but I preferred Math Shark . We bought both Light 'n' Strike Math and Math Shark for my 9-year old nephew and had my son try out both games. After you choose the level and type of math (add, subtract, divide or multiply) the Light 'n' Strike asks you a series of math questions. In order to score, you need to hit the numbers of the correct answer just as they are lit up and then hit enter. There isn't a set time limit so if you're trying to get your kid to memorize math facts as quickly as possible, this is not the educational toy for you. However, the Light 'n' Strike is a fun way for kids to work on math skills while improving on their hand-eye coordination.
Learning Resources Light 'n' Strike Math Opinions
WRONG . Great idea, horrid product.

Kids have to push or hit the answer when the number is illuminated. But the correct number may never be illuminated. Then your kid gets a "WRONG". I watched this happen numerous times including twice in a row. Likewise, it may go on so long before the right answer is illuminated that it is boring.

The levels progress way to rapidly. In Level 1 addition, it mixes one and two digit answers. So you get 0+1 and then 9+9 in the same grouping. Then when you move up to level 2 addition, it start asking things like what is 78 + ? = 82.

Finally, this is a fragile toy even though it is supposed to be struck.
Best Educational Toy Ever Purchased . This is a great toy for all ages. I bought it for my 7 year old, however, all of my children ages 5-12 enjoy this toy. They prefer pressing the buttons with their fingers instead of using the hammer. It offers a challenge, but is still fun and exciting at the same time. It has truly helped my 12 year old to start mastering multiplication. Even though it is a learning toy it is very entertaining and keeps them from the televison or video games. It has helped make learning fun. I recommend this product to anyone who has a child struggling with math. I have to go now my 7 year old wants to play it again!!!
Discouraging . I bought this thinking it would get my children excited about math but the complete opposite happened. The toy tells them they got the answer wrong repeatedly, even when they get it correct. My children became very discouraged because of this. I am throwing it away and won't even think about giving it away or selling it to discourage somebody else's child!

Cons Review
a disappointment . After trying other math toys where you had a twist knobs to enter an answer, this toy seemed superior in that you could quickly hit the correct answer with the mallet. Because they've tried to make this more "fun" by only accepting the correct answer when the numbers light up, there is a lot of time sitting there waiting for the numbers, and NOT much time actually drilling math facts. Additionally, I was disappointed because some of the questions are formatted in a more complicated way giving you 7 x ? = 35. This could have been a really terrific speed drill game, but wound up being complicated and frustrating for my kids who are still learning the answers. They can't deal with not only having the correct answer but getting it when it lights up, before the time is out, AND having to hit "enter" after they put their numbers in. ALSO, this game is very big, measuring 8.5" x 15". I will say that it seems to be well made. Don't expect it to replace good old fashioned flashcards.
Disappointed . I do not like this. Bought for my 8 year old to practice math facts and she does not like it either. You have to wait for the number to light up before you can hit the answer and move on. There is way too much time to sit and wait and wait and then wait more. A kids attention span is just not long enough. This will not improve speed or provide fun. It appears to be well built and sound is good quality.
A Great Educational Toy . I purchased this toy for my 6-year-old son for Christmas, and am very pleased with it. I was looking for the most appealing math game for my active son, and I think I have found it! Its design resembles an arcade game, it has lively music (with volume control!), multiple levels, and it is very sturdy. You can "hit" the keys with the mallot or use your hands, but the mallot is an appealing feature! I expect this toy to be used for fun learning for at least a couple of years.
Wrong (encore) . We have also found the product to make mistakes--saying an answer was "wrong" even when it was the correct answer and the number was struck within the allotted (very short) time frame. This happened over and over again. Very frustrating, and even if it had worked well, not very educational because of what others have noted about having to wait for the correct answer to be highlighted. Your money would be better spent elsewhere.
good eductaional toy thats fun . my son loves math problems he is 8 years old and likes this toy and it is not to fast which is good for him because if things go to fast he gets frustrated. i would recommend it to a child that likes math games
