worth it . I hunted for the best digiscope for the money all over ebay, amazon, onlinesciencemall, shopping dot com and others. This appears to be it. Here are the highlights:
-I am able to get a good focus & resolution shot at 100x; beyond that it's a bit fuzzy. 100x means that 1/16 inch wide part shows up as 6 inches wide on the screen. That's good enough. You can just double the zoom on the screen after that.
-taking a movie is the best option; start the movie by clicking the mouse on "start capture". Playback the movie on windows media player and take a screenshot (printscreen saves the image to clipboard). Copy to word (right-click, paste)or openoffice then export the file to .pdf to reduce the file size. This works fine.
-The movies are very large size. 300MB in one example. The file could be uploaded to Google docs as opposed to emailing this behemoth.
-An improvement would be to take a snapshot with the mouse as well. It's impractical to press the red button without going out of focus. It's possible to tape the red button shut and just keep the last shot.
-The scope lights stay on, but the lighting of the live image is controlled on the screen. Thus there is decent lighting control, although it could be improved.
- I would not buy a model without the stand. I use business cards to shim the height as necessary.
-It runs on the power from the USB; no batteries or other power supply nec.
-This is adequate for preliminary and possibly final forensic photos. It is not the best device, and certainly no match to the lab stereomicroscope. It does however, pick up where the microphoto camera leaves off and can save time/expense in sending the part to a lab.
-If you are a forensic scientist or engineer (like me) I'd say it's a great companion to a portable laptop and worthy of the forensic toolkit.
-Again, I believe it's the best bang for the buck, not the best.

Its actually a very high quality stand it comes with, and does not look at all cheap.
Very educational, we keep it plugged into the PC, and my kids love looking at things from the garden

Microscope wonderful when the connections work... . 1) This microscope requires you to focus and press the snapshot button--hard--to take a picture, while simultaneously trying to keep the camera perfectly still. 2) I can't remember what combination of menu items I had to click in the included software, Digital Microscope - DirectShow Video Capture Sample, ver 1.00, copyright Syntek Corp, before I got the program to preview any image at all. 3) Each time you click the red button to take a snapshot, a new window opens OVER the preview window, so you have to save and close the image, or at least drag and drop it elsewhere, everytime you snap a shot. 4) The folder where the Digital Microscope program saves image files by default is a system folder under Windows. Hmm. That's awkward. 5) I found that I preferred previewing and editing the images in Photoshop Elements 2.0, which, once I reinstalled the driver/software a few times recognized the microscope as a TWAIN device. The preview window has a button you click to take the snapshot. Plus, wherever you save the first file, the rest are saved to the same place unless you specify a different target destination. Now all that aside, I just tried to use my microscope again, however now Photoshop Elements is giving me an error message and even after I reinstalled everything, neither Digital Microscope - DirectShow Video Capture nor Elements will preview images from the microscope.

Good for Price; Mac driver hard to find but I managed . Considering that this product is only about $50, I am pretty impressed. I had a difficult time finding drivers that would make this work with the Mac - iChat would see it as a USB web cam, but that wouldn't let me do digital zoom. I tried a number of different programs that work for very similar products, such as the Dino-Lite, but to no success. Finally, I ran across "miXscope", by Eric Hangstefer, of EdH Software. It supports this USB microscope as a QuickTime capable device, and lets you do digital zoom, take snapshots, video, timelapse sequences, and more. The combination of this microscope and miXscope got me what I was after.
The images produced are decent -- once focused, you can see quite a lot of detail. I bought this to do some kitchen table examinations of bugs and leaves and things with my son (8) and his cousins. They had a great time. Examining the legs, wings, and shells, of cicadas, flies, beetles, etc was fun and interesting.
In short, for the price, I think this is an excellent product, especially for sharing with kids. The lens is well protected by the clear ring of plastic around the lights, and I've dropped it onto the floor a few times with no apparent ill effects.
I have only two minor complaints with this product.
1. I wish the lights were better & brighter. With supplemental lighting, it's good.
2. The stand that comes with it has no heft to its base at all, so it's too easy to move out of position. I suggest attaching it to a heavier base such as piece of wood or just taping it to the table while in use to keep it motionless.

No warranty . The microscope itself worked fine, but I noticed that the manual did not mention a warranty. I contacted Arbor Scientific and they confirmed that there was no warranty. However, they offered to warrant it for an undisclosed period of time. When I pressed them, they said they would warrant it for a couple of months.
I have had very bad luck with products being dead on arrival or dying shortly afterward, so I returned the unit for a refund.

USB Microscope . The Digital USB Microscope Video Camera I purchased works just as it is supposed to. However, the software is not entirely Windows XP compatable, and my system has become somewhat unstable since I loaded the software to run the microscope.
Great Product Great Price . My daughter and her boyfriend have a knife sharpening business and I have a small company that builds automated deburring machinery. The price of this product is an exceptional value, I took a chance and bought it, there weren't many reviews on it. It has worked great for my business as well as my kids business. You can take movies and still pictures and the camera is very easy to set up. Within minutes of purchasing this product we were using it and were amazed at the magnification and clarity of the movies. I would also suggest this as a gift for young children studying insects or other objects that would benefit from the use of magnification and photography. I have had no problems with this product. For my business I had to purchase the service of a site that allows me to transfer large files to my customers, a short video file can easily approach 2G. I would highly recommend this product.
Cons Review
Cheap copy - you get what you pay for . This is a cheap knock-off of the DinoLite microscopes. You can buy something for cheap and get a cool toy for your kids, but you'll end up buying the DInoLite, or one of its decent competitors. ProScope and MiScope are also good. But this thing is hard to use and has a terrible stand. Spend a little more and you'll get a lot more.
Software buggy . For the first 10 minutes I thought this was a 5 star product, then it scrambled the brains of my Intel i7 computer running Windows 7 64-bit. Software started opening multiple windows on its own then my computer shut down. You have to write some REALLY bad code to hose a computer that bad (I've owned my computer for 6 months and have never had a hang let alone a hard crash).
The microscope itself is pretty cool and it's too bad they couldn't have matched it with descent software. After I restarted my computer I couldn't get the USB port to recognize the microscope anymore. Tried all the usual things: . rebooted, reinstalled driver, turned everything off in case there was some strange hardware issue. No luck. Fished the microscope packaging out of the garbage to return it and tried one more time. Still didn't connect and then I closed my browser and it came up again. Unfortunately not a repeatable solution. Now it works randomly (20% of the time) and it's cool enough that I just might keep it. If anyone has bought a comparable product that's more reliable please let me know.
