Wonderful but stinky!!! . The directions are easy to follow & step up is quick! Worms make themselves at home right away & they are super fun to watch. We used this in a 1st grade classroom. Since the soil must be kept wet and veggies added as needed, it smells terrible! But the odor does not carry, so unless you are the one adding moisture or veggies, you are safe from the smell. Even standing in front of it, watching the worms, you won't smell it, but as soon as you lean over it - Gross! I do still recommend it, we learned a lot using the worm colony, the worms & kids loved it!

Happy 2 yr old . My son is 2 and loves all bugs and creepy crawlies - we put together this worm observatory together and dug up some worms from the yard. You have to remember to keep the soil moist and put some slightly over ripe veggies in there to keep them going but he looks in on them each day.

Educational House for your Worms . I purchased this worm observatory because my 4 yr. old son LOVES worms! I figured it would be educational and with summer here, it would be a great small project for us, plus he was begging me to bring a few worms he'd found outside here and there inside our home for pets! He'd cry and cry when I explained they wouldn't survive. I have to say overall "I expected more" from this kit. I am a bit disappointed. The kit's instructions say that it includes a card to mail in for your worms. This "card" never came in our kit. I kept going through everything, checked through the instruction booklet, etc. It took some research and several phone calls and e-mails to the company that makes this kit plus to another that takes care of the distribution here in the US. The Co. that makes the kit is in Spain. No one could help me or could mail me this "card". They told me I could find my own worms around the house, but I don't have a "garden" and it hadn't rained in ages by us to surface any worms. I have a baby and another child so I wasn't happy with any of their responses that it was falling on me to take care of this and my time to try and call around to try and locate worms nearby. To me when I bought this kit, it should be included! It also didn't provide that much dirt. I will say the "dirt" came in this little block and you slowly add water as it grows and grows then you fluff it with a fork to loosen it. That was really neat and both my kids LOVED it. We shredded newspaper and put that at the bottom as the kit says to do, added the dirt we made (I also added the extra dirt that came with my worms that I bought) and then added the sand the kit also provides. I finally found a gas station that sells "worms" for fishing! My son does LOVE his worms and was showing any and everyone that came to our house. I just thought it was alot of work on my part to get these worms and at the end of the day, I got no help from anyone that either make this kit or handled it in the US either! Also, it's sort of hard to see the worms. We have 30 worms in total in there and you barely see them as they hide well. The feet of the observatory fall off easily and the lid doesn't lock so it comes off easily. After a mishap of my son knocking it over hence a huge muddy mess on my carpet, I scooped everything back up as much as possible put it back in, and taped the lid on! I take it off to add more water, etc. My son loves it and the little booklet helps them learn a bit more about worms. Still better than most toys, etc. that don't teach much and at least you learn about nature! I would give it a better rating if I didn't have as much of a hassle as I did getting my worms. That was my biggest gripe.
