Skip Melissa and Doug and get these.... . These are durable, dense foam letters- uppercase AND lowercase. You get two complete sets of each with some extras of the most used letters. The capitals are about 1.75 inches high, but the lowercase are smaller. I felt comfortable with my 20 mo old playing with the uppercase, but not with the lowercase. They are only an inch high. I took off one star for this because the size of the lowercase was not given and it should have been. The laminated magnet coating covers the entire backside which is WONDERFUL. No small magnet pieces to choke on and they stay on well and don't slide. A MUCH better value than M&D because you can actually spell anything you want with these. Lots of letters! And if you get them wet, so what!!!! Just dry them off. The M&D wooden letters are coated with paper and they are ruined if you get them wet! Smethport makes a foam magnet set of object and animals too- 60 to the set!!These are a great accessory to the letters and they are all large enough for my toddler to grasp easily. If they would make all of these letters about 2-2.5 inches high, they would fill a niche market that no one else has met and would sell a ton of them on Amazon!!

Well made fun! . These were a lot nicer than I expected and a great buy. The "foam" is high density with crisp die cut edges. The colors are vivid. These things are soft,the magnets are strong enough to hold solidly, but they are not strong enough to work well as a holder for something else. There is a good mix of capital and small fonts. They also go back in the jar easily. They work on any steel surface, and in our house the refrigerator door is the preferred work surface.
The usual caution, some of these are small and could be swallowed.

Great magnetic letters . The letters are lightweight, yet with a strong magnet to adhere to any metallic surface. There are no loose magnets to fall out so they are safer than the plastic ones. The grandchildren love them!

Nice improvement over the plastic ones . When my children were young, the magnetic letters on the frig were a big help for learning letters, spelling, and so on. They were useful for entertaining little ones while I was busy in the kitchen. Besides identifying letters and learning to spell, sometimes they were used for sorting by color. One creative child would make a rainbow with the letters. The Smethport foam letters are an improvement in three ways. (1)Sometimes the old style letters would slip or tilt because the magnets didn't hold well. These letters do not. The magnets stick well. (2)Because they are not hard plastic, they don't slide under the frig as easily as the older versions did. (3)The set comes with lower case letters as well as upper case. I am not so thrilled that the vowels are all red. I would have preferred multi-colored everything. But that is not a deal breaker. The 4 year old these were given to was pleased, of course, but his mother was very happy to get them. One more thing: in case you think these are just for kids, there were many occasions when adults had fun "playing" with the letters. We even had a test that if you couldn't spell your name in fifteen seconds or less, you couldn't have another drink. Just be sure to change inappropriate words before the kids see them.

Save your money - buy another brand . I purchased this one based on a lot of positive reviews, but when we received it, none of the red letters were actually magnetized, and so we could not even put the whole alphabet on the fridge. The cost of shipping it back meant that it was not worth returning it. So I purchased the Melissa & Doug wooden letters, which actually worked! If I had known that not all of the magnetic letters were actually magnetized, then I would not have purchased these - save your money, obviously there is not clear quality control with this product.
Just perfect. . We purchased these foam letter magnets for my 7 year old son, to help him learn his spelling words. There are enough of each letter to spell all the words he's had since we got the magnets. The magnets stick well to the fridge, and not so tightly that he can't move them easily. The foam letters are durable. The colors are bright. It seems that the letters battle each other well too, and are brave enough to join the other letters to form big words. My kinsethetic learner is getting As on his spelling tests. Perfect!
Great for toddlers . I agree with what some other folks have written that the lowercase letters are quite small, standing about an inch tall, and could be a choking hazard for young kiddos. That said, the magnets on the back are the sheet type that cover the entire back of the letter, so there's no chance of little magnets falling out and being eaten if these letters are thrown, dropped, or otherwise toddler-abused. The sheet magnets are also strong enough to stay solidly on the fridge but also come off easily when wanted -- no sliding letters like some others I've seen. The foam is soft and squishy, can be bent back into shape pretty easily, and doesn't hurt when stepped on (a definite plus in our house!). We're saving the lowercase letters for when our daughter is a little older.
Exactly what I was looking for . I ordered these for my baby girl's first birthday (and yes, they are rated for ages 3+) and they are everything I hoped they would be. They look great, stand up to wear-and-tear, and are very nicely made. Since my toddler is still putting everything in her mouth, they do require a good bit of supervision (the lower-case R, L, and I in particular can get lost in the mouth easily), but the bigger letters are actually quite comfortable for her to chew on. The magnets aren't the strongest, but they're strong enough to stay on the fridge. Like someone else said, though, don't expect them to hold a piece of artwork or anything. That's the only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 - it would be great if the magnets were a little bit stronger. Otherwise, I'm extremely happy with them.
Great Quality! . These are just as I hoped, colorful and sturdy. Fun for the refrigerator to play and also a great learning toy.
