Pretzel Logic . Caveat emptor: This kit includes ingredients most home cooks already have (flour, baking soda -- odd that it doesn't include the tiny bit of sugar the recipe calls for) and yeast. But you'll want to test for freshness; there's no picture in the instructions of what bubbling yeast is supposed to look like, so you have to already know (or Google!)...and lo and behold, the yeast in our kit was dead. Given that many bakers already have yeast in their kitchen or freezer, and it's easily found in groceries, I don't think expired yeast is a dealbreaker. But the little thermometer also didn't work, which was more irksome. Then again, most cooks have a kitchen thermometer. Oh, and if you want the kid to use a half-tablespoon of something, why would you include only a teaspoon and a tablespoon measure (unless you also encouraged them to do a little equivalency math, which the kit doesn't)? Weirdness. The "science" is mostly of the "observe!" sort -- "what does the flour smell like?" "Look how the dough doubles in size!" Well, uh, yeah. And the recipe included is widely available online (there are variants of it on Martha Stewart's web site and on the excellent cooking blog Smitten Kitchen), so there's no real value-add there. Finally, the age recommendation on the box is 6 and up, but I think 6-year-olds will have trouble with the attention and dexterity necessary. Pretzelry is a time-consuming process! Lots of waiting time. And the dough is very stretchy and not easy for wee ones to shape. Older kids will enjoy the challenge, though -- my 7-year-old lost interest, but my 10-year-old enjoyed the project. And the packaging is so cute, it could get kids interested in cooking and food science. The upshot: Your call. If your kid is already comfortable in the kitchen, you should just get yourself a pretzel recipe. But the kit's a cute gift for a non-cooking-oriented young pretzel fan.
