Not as useful as I'd hoped . The imagery is stunning! The cards are large and well made of a durable card stock. They will withstand normal wear and tear well. Why only 3 stars then?
The description on the back of these cards is almost worthless. At least in my opinion. Since these cards are bigger than the competition's there is ample space for paragraphs of interesting information. But they've kept the information purely academic and dry.
Here is a sample card from Learning Resources: "Caribbean Reef Shark
class: chondrichtheys
habitat: oceans
locations: tropical oceans (mediterranean sea to the atlantic ocean)
size: about 6 ft long
body covering: skin
diet: fish, crustaceans, molluskssuperfact! a sharks' brain is less than 3 inches long." Here is a competing card's information, from the Planet Earth cards, which are half the size as the Learning Resources cards and have much less room for information, yet I find the information more appealing:"Great White Shark
These fierce hunters, known as eating machines, start their lives eating fish, rays, and even other sharks. But when they become adults they switch to eating marine mammals, such as seals."Here is another:
"The catfish gets its name from the whiskers on it's face. Some catfish live in the sea, others in fresh water. The Amazon is home to incredible catfish which have adapted to help them survive the tough conditions. One species of freshwater catfish can even breathe air! It lives out of the water in the leaf litter on the stream banks." Which description would you rather read? Which are you more likely to retain? Which is more fun? I think there is much room for improvement in both of the cards' descriptions, but the Planet Earth cards have much less real estate for words, since their cards are half the size. Personally, I find the Planet Earth cards much more useful, although they are flimsy and have lower quality images. Hopefully Learning Resources will improve their descriptions so we can buy more of their products, because they are superior in quality images, size, and durability. But, in my opinion, these cards miss the opportunity for any real learning to occur.
Learning Resources Animal Classifying Cards, Oceans Reviews
Nicest animal cards available . I searched high and low for animal picture cards for a game I wanted to play with my granddaughter. I ordered several other brands and these are by far the best cards. They are large 5 inches by 7 inches and sturdy with colorful laminated pictures. I ordered all the sets Learning Resources make and was pleased with all of them. Be aware however that some animals are duplicated in other sets.
