what happened? . I wasn't able to use these cards at all. The good news is that the company refunded my purchase totally. When I opened the box, it was 1/2 empty. The cards, strangely enough, had no answers on the back side. How were you to know what the correct answer was? No other sheet was included in the box to address this issue. And, the company didn't reply re: these two strange problems when I wrote to them. They only said that they've sold many of these over the years. I've never, ever, seen or heard of flash cards of any type where the 'answer' wasn't shown somewhere. What happened?

These are not flash cards! . These cards are great practice with vowels because the vowel wheels allow you to practice every vowel with each consonant. However, these are not flash cards--- there's nothing on the back so there's no way to know for sure what each letter is! There are so many Hebrew letters which look nearly identical. I had to go through the cards obe by one and make my best guess about what each is, and then write my guess on the back... But I'm still not sure if I'm learning them correctly--- what's the point?!! Overall, great practice for vowels but all guessing for consonants--- bummer.
How to use the vowel wheel cards (by a Hebrew Teacher) . I've taught Hebrew for nearly 15 yrs, and I LOVE to use these cards as a teaching tool with individual students and with my classes. I have a variety of fun little tips and tricks to teach students the sounds of the vowels, and then using the wheel cards enables me to reinforce the phonics quickly and easily. BUT you kind of need to know Hebrew in order to use them. There ARE cards out there that will show a consonant and a vowel on one side and on the other will spell out the sound the pair makes together. Those are better for self-teaching. These wheel cards are designed for a teacher's use when teaching someone else. When used with some of my techniques, they enable most students to learn their vowels in as little as one short session.I like to teach the vowels FIRST. This is because often people have a mental block about the vowels for some reason, and so tackling the vowels right off the bat shows the students (kids AND adults) how easy they really are. First, I give the students a fun clue to help associate the sound of each vowel with its shape or pattern. Then, once they can remember those sounds (and that's not hard--after all, each wheel only has 7 vowels, plus there are a couple more not on the wheels), I take a random card and say something like, "Ok. This is a BET. It says 'B.' When you read Hebrew, you say the sound of the letter and then the sound of the vowel below it. So if BET says 'B,' then THIS (pointing to the BET plus the "ee" vowel) says 'BEE'; then THIS (turning the wheel counter-clockwise to the next vowel) says 'BOO' . . . ." and so on. Then I switch letters and go through the whole wheel with another consonant. After several letters, the students usually have learned the vowels pretty well. (In fact, my youngest boy, who is autistic, got into my vowel wheel cards when he was very small--about 2 or 3 yrs old. I didn't want him to just tear them up--and I know from experience little kids tend to get curious about how those wheels work and end up popping them off--so I sat him down and showed him with 3 or 4 cards the progression of vowels: "This would be 'bee, boo, bah, bah, beh, bay and b;' this would be 'gee, goo, gah, gah, geh, gay and g,'" etc. He learned all the sounds in about 10 minutes and since then has never forgotten them.)Then, in future lessons, I help students learn to name all the consonants, because if they can NAME each letter, then the name of the letter is a clue to its sound (e.g., Bet says B, Gimel says G, Dalet says D, Shin says Sh, etc.) I introduce each letter with the vowel wheel, so that what they've learned about the vowels is continually reinforced. I have a variety of fun tricks for remembering consonant names as well, and I incorporate a lot of other "goodies," especially when working with kids--I'll let them take turns holding up and manipulating the cards, for example; and I also use magnets, silly songs, dry-erase boards, colored chalk, puppets, websites, foods, cartoons, letters made out of colored pipe cleaner stems, vowels made out of pom poms . . . you name it.Using these cards along with other materials is a great way to keep students interested and engaged!
