Educational and fun . This package comes with 5 owl pellets, approximately 1 1/2" long. As the other reviewer mentioned, they are just wrapped in foil and sent in an ordinary manila padded envelope without any directions. I was able to find instructional videos and directions by doing a search online and even a bone identification chart, which helped my kids (ages 9 and 6) identify their findings. Basically, you carefully pull apart the pellets on a piece of white paper and very gently pull out the bones, teeth, etc. with your fingers or tweezers. Our pellets contained many bones and several skulls, much to the kids' delight. Our bone chart led us to believe that our owls consumed shrews. This project is a good lesson in patience; it kept us entertained for about 30 minutes. They got to keep their "findings" in a plastic baggie. Be sure to wash hands thoroughly after handling the pellets.

Who woulda' thought . Great teaching tool. Kids loved it and I'll order more for next years agenda. Really easily identifiable bones and other matter and not near as yucky as I thought it would be.
Owl Pellets (Set of 5) Opinions
Educational and fun . My boys had a great time dissecting these owl pellets. We downloaded a paper on the bones so we were able to identify most of the bones we found. It was highly educational and led to further discussion on owls, predators, prey and digestion. EXCELLENT.
owl pellets . My 4th grade students loved the owl pellets, lots of bones and skulls found. I will order them again next year.
Good activity . I teach 5th grade science, and for a end of the year activity I decided to purchase owl pellets and allow my students to dissect them and identify the bones. Each owl pellet carries a surprising amount of bones to identify and pretty much every one of them that my kids dissected contained at least one skull, ribs, jaws, hips, etc. Once taken out of the pellet itself, students can then work in groups to identify the type of animal that their owl had eaten.

One thing that you should know before you buy these is that your package does not come with a bone identification chart. However, this is not really a problem because you can download them from countless internet sites for free. All in all, this is a perfect idea for a lesson plan and can work well for discussing ecosystems, habitats, animal diversity, food webs, etc. Kids will love doing this and it is something that they will always remember.
Great Resource . My daughter (4yrs) loves this book. What could possibly be more fun than dissecting owl puke? Very informative for us adults also.
CAUTION: MAY BE A SOURCE OF DANGEROUS MICROORGANISMS . When taking apart the pellets, I felt a strange itching and crawling sensation on all of my upper body. I also discoved 2 tiny icthy bumps. I immediately took a shower and seemed to feel better. But even sitting near these I would feel itchy and crawling sensations. I know that owl pellets often contain mites, so I looked up pictures of bird mite bites, however they did not exactly resemble my bites. I'm not sure exactly what was wrong with them, but something was definately fishy, so I threw them out. Also, they were NOT sent to me in the heat sealed polybag as stated in the description, but in a bunch of crumpled newspaper. Therefore, I highly doubt they were actually heat sanitized, and they probably are from some random person getting them from their barn. There have been outbreaks of SALMONELLA in elementary schools due to contaminated owl pellets.
The picture on this site is completely misleading!!!! . First of all, this is for owl pellets alone! No book! I found this out after I read closer once I placed the order. I took the blame for that myself. However, I just recieved the package in the mail and found that it doesn't come in any kind of identifiable box either. Just 5 small wrapped 'pellets' in tin foil, in a plastic bag. That's it. It'll be great getting to explain that on Christmas morning. Not to mention it looks cheap. There is actually an owl pellet book with owl pellet out there, and the picture looks just like the one they show for this product. Be careful you know exactly what it is you're buying!
