T&K Chem series is cumulative . I am going to buy some of these kits, but the Amazon site does not explain the sequencing. At the Thames and Kosmos site, they explain that Chem 2000 contains all of the experiments of Chem 1000 and then some. Likewise, Chem 3000 contains all of the experiments of Chem 1000 and 2000 and then some. I figured there might be other parents out there who wanted this piece of information.

Chem C 2000 good value . It must be good, I bought this kit to get my sons home school labs done for chemistry. The deal was he (had) to do one a week. The kit arrived yesterday and he has completed 1-12 in two days. I will tell you seltzer water is in the first part of the book so buy some before the kit arrives.
Other than that peroxide, alcohol, water, and vinegar were needed. Seltzer was not something I keep on hand but the other things were here. The only thing it lacks is a full list of other things you need so you can be prepared when the kit arrives. The price went down $2 after I purchased it. Which is good for you I guess. I can't complain I was pricing kits for over a month and this was by far the most complete with the best price. It is a good value. Books A million had it for $105 but when I went to buy it the price jumped to $150. I thought I had dyslexia but I had printed the page out 2 weeks prior and it said 105 on the printed page. To sum it up I we are vary happy with the kit.

Tons of Fun! . This is an excellent chemistry kit. I love the fact that manual is not difficult to read and my son was able to work independently on some of the experiments. I would highly recommend.

I am truly disappointed with this poor excuse for a chemistry set. It is all colors and flashy things, nothing really is explained. There are no chemical formulas (even though it is targeted to older children who could perfectly understand something in a much simpler way things as the decomposition of water 2 H2O -> 2H2 + O2 rather than the OVERLY LONG and TRULY BORING text that goes along with each experiment and really explains very little or nothing at all. Wow! I know this is no longer the 1970's or 1980's but I really miss my chemistry set from back then. This chemistry set is really worthless.

This is my second T&K set (the first one was a physics set). I am really dismayed how poor they are in terms of actual explanations of the science behind the kit. It is so DUMBED DOWN that is extremely boring since at the end of the experiments you really gain no knowledge of what happened since the text only describes what you see.

I will *never* buy any T&K kit again.

Good but difficult. Not for the faint of heart. . There are many, many great things to do with this set. It is difficult for my son to work his way through, and is much better if I read the experiment first, then explain it to him as to what the goal is, and all the steps and ingredients. It's more like a teacher's manual. That said, I believe we will learn a LOT about chemistry!

Pleased but somewhat disappointed. . I purchased the CHEM C2000 for my son, so that we could do the experiments together, it was fun, I enjoyed it, however I was disappointed that it required external ingredients for some of the experiments. However, I fully recommend it.

Not a toy chem set . I got this set for our 9 year old who out grew his first chemistry kit. This one is "for real". In order to do the experiments you have to start at lesson 1 and work through the chapters. It feels like homeschool material, which is great, eventhough we don't homeschool. I will set aside time to work on it with my son, he can't do the work without parental help. I recomend it for those who really want to learn real chemistry.

Great Gift for a Budding Chemist . This chemistry kit has it all! Chemicals, an alcohol burner, and test tubes. It requires parent supervision, but is fantastic for those with an interest in chemistry. I got this for my son's birthday, and it has provided hours of fun! No accidents yet, but we are careful around here, and as a former science teacher, I supervise well. Super cool!

Cons Review

Only as good as the manual which is weak . Overall, this is a nice set. However, the manual could have (and should have) been written much better. On several experiments, it has induced frustration in my son and unfortunately, dampened his interest in chemistry instead of fostering it. A great example of this is the invisible ink experiment. You are over half way into the experiment before you are told to pull out a feather/ink quill or fine point paint brush (neither of which come with the set.) Next surprise, you are told that slightly yellow paper works best (hmmm, let me see, where is that stock of slightly yellow paper I keep around the house - Ah yes, next to my ink quill.) Finally, you are told that you need to mix up two addition solutions not initially mentioned.

Come on, folks. How hard is it to provide a simple "You will need these items for this experiment list" at the top of each experiment?

Additionally, I think the experiments would be a little more exciting if some more fun was introduced into the manual. Again, referring to the invisible ink experiment, some text about secret agents or on passing secret messages between friends might make it a little more exciting for kids.

The set is nice made and compiled so it certainly is worthy from that standpoint. It is also well packaged.

Daughter Loves It . My daughter was studying volcanos at school, so I found this at a perfect time. She loves it, and with one example, she can make her own volcano erupt whenever she likes. Clean-up is tolerable.

Nice volcano- immediate satisfaction. . This volcano was a big hit. I read the enclosed booklet to my kids about the different types of volcanos. That was short enough but informative enough- just right. We separated the two parts of the volcano and talked about what each part of the labeled side does. Then we errupted it. That was the ONLY part that was a wee bit disappointing and I think that the reason for it was that we followed the recipe for lava in the booklet. That contained liquid dish soap. I think the dish soap slowed down the flow. It was probably more realistic that way, but not quite as exciting. Next time, we will leave the soap out. Overall, it was pretty good.

Amazing educational resource but... . Because my 6 years old's son is a curious pre-scientific, I thought a real volcano (volcano model) could nourish his always thinking mind. However, the volcano was amazing just the first time he saw it. We make an eruption at the follow day and another one in the follow one. That's it! Now the box is standing in my room formally "inactive". As a teacher, I wondering if it could be a good experience for my students at school, but I don't know yet if for 3 years old could provide the same emotions than for a 5-6 years child. The information inside the model is more for older ones. For educational resource, it will help but for a regular present for your children (it doesn't matter how scientific they are) won't be a good-excited idea.

Great tool for the classroom! . I would recommend this to any parent or teacher looking to teach about volcanoes. It is interesting and fun for children of all ages.

Colossal Disappointment . What a colossal disappointment! This thing is cheaply made and poorly designed. It is not even a useful educational tool. One of the biggest rip-offs I have ever seen!

The Perfect Illustration for Jesus Blowing Away Our Sins . Sunday school and Vacation Bible School kids love the volcano. I label the baking soda as Sin and the red colored vinegar as the Blood of Jesus. They are able to see what the blood of Jesus does for our sins when we allow Him to be our Savior. They Get It. It is awesome when I find an illustration that sticks in the kids minds and explains Christ's love and salvation for us so well. I will use the volcano over and over again. Priceless!!!

I just thought I would let all of you know a little more about this product. I bought the original and stumbled upon this one on the site and had to contact Amazon to find out what it was, just received it. It is a bit beat up but I will be contacting them. This is the complete plus system with the Laurie Berkner catridge, we are huge fans! This is not sold in stores, you can only purchase on Amazon. The songs included are Boots, Bottle Caps, I'm Gonna Catch you, Fruit Salad Salsa and Drive my car. I haven't given it to my son yet, as it is a Christmas present, but tested it out and he is sure to love!

An ABA teacher's dream . I am an ABA teacher and therapist for young children on the Autism Spectrum. I have had the original version of this toy for years (2 actually) and just purchased the newer version. While it is a little pricey on Amazon, it was imperative I get the Laurie Berkner Cartridge. This toy motivates my students more then anything else. I use it as a reinforcer and I have yet to meet a child that does not love this toy. The microphone is a great incentive to encourage speech from the children as well. A HUGE must for any ABA therapist or teacher. Worth every penny...

My little girl LOVES this toy!!! . I bought the Learn through Music Plus system with the Laurie Berkner cartridge from Toy's R Us for about 40 or 50 dollars a few months ago. It has a lighted touch screen and the cartridge is like a scroll. It goes through quite a few different pictures that play different songs for each one. It's really cute and a must have for your little music lover. I think this is the closest thing to a handheld video game for small children and they can learn from it. My daughter plays with it almost every day!! Every time we visit people and she brings it all the other kids huddle around her because they want to play with it. It's a really great toy!

Lovin' and learnin' thru music . My grandson who is 2 1/2 is definitely tuned in to music so when I saw this toy I thought it was a terrific way to learn. My son tells me that Ben loves it and plays it all the time. I'm sure he's learning also. I'll know better when I visit next.

Great for Preschoolers . This was a Christmas gift for my two year daughter. She loves the music and knows all the songs already. She can even spell "Boots" now. It's a little loud but I would definitely recommend it for toddlers.

Super fun educational toy! . This is the best toy I think I have ever purchased. My grandson began playing and singing with it the moment he opened it. He is so attached to it now that it is trouble when his toy is put away for bedtime or meals. He is 19 months old and loves every minute with his new favorite toy. His mom loves that it is so educational and keeps him occupied for hours while she does her own thing around the house. I highly recommend this toy to anyone with a toddler!

Great toy for kids ages 2-4 . My 21 month old daughter loves her new Learn Through Music Plus! She has just discovered the microphone and is having a blast singing into it and hearing herself. Right now she enjoys the songs the most, but I'm sure in a couple of months she will understand the "games" more. We purchased a few more cassettes and she really likes the Elmo Scavenger Hunt. I really like the Laurie Berkner cassette, although the songs are a bit short so hearing them over and over can get a little annoying. There is a volume control, but even the soft volume is a bit loud. Otherwise, it's a great toy. This toy was a big hit with my almost 4 year old nephew too! He played with it the whole time he was at my house.

great find . I couldn't believe that this was the same machine that sells for almost twice as much elsewhere. My daughters are HUGE Luarie B fans from watching Jack's Big Music Show.
My sister-in-law recommend the toy and when found this version I was thrilled.
Its a Xmas gift so they haven't played with it yet, but I anticipate hearing it every day.

More impressive than I thought it would be! Five stars! . I hesitantly bought this toy for my son for Xmas, trying to find something for him to learn math with. He is a bright 3.5 year old. I figured I would be working with him using these wooden rulers, which are of a much higher quality than I was expecting. So on Xmas he opens the toy, and plays with them himself, measuring daddy's foot, his own foot, etc. I show him the included book about how the rulers represent numbers, and how these numbers can be added together... just a cursory review. Well, about an hour later I was in the kitchen, and he comes running in and says, "Mommy! Guess what? Eight plus four is twelve!". Needless to say, I was pretty amazed... so I would have to say this is a pretty amazing toy --- you WILL have to work with the child, its not necessarily something that will fascinate them for long hours of play like legos or something... but it sure does hit the nail on the head when it comes to learning math. And its fun, too. I can't tell you how impressed I am. Plus, these rulers are build to last... so long as you don't throw them in the bath or something. I highly recommend this set.

Well worth the 20 something dollars! . I found this toy described in a home schooling magazine and sought out a more reasonable price here at Amazon. (Which I found when I purchased the Inchimals last week... $22).

My almost 5 year old LOVES this product. We have been extremely casual about pre-school this year, and he begs to "do school" with the Inchimals. He has been measuring toys and household items. He has also been learning to recognize the numbers he hadn't mastered yet.

They are great in that they are specific lengths and can be laid out (or stood up like stairs) to show the relationship in size. He can see that 7 is bigger than 6. He can count the marked out inches along the side or dots on the end. As we have only had this product a few days now, I can see how in the future we can use them as a tool for learning addition and subtraction. This is the best math manipulative!

so much to learn with these . My boys really like these...they love to line them up, stack them, see which is the biggest or smallest, and they love to write in the book that goes with it too. They are very appealing and pretty durable. The paint did chip a little on some of them but still look pretty good. Its a toy good for so many ages

Learning math without knowing it! . We use this for my 4 year old daughter, and she's learning math without knowing it. we're not really following the instructions in the book, as she's slightly too young for doing the real math. She actually kept begging to go through the additions/subtractions in the book but we told her she would have to wait. Note: My daughter isn't usually the self-motivated type when it comes to learning academic stuff...so it's amazing that this game fascinated her so much! We made up games...puppet play, measuring how tall each animal is, stacking them up and trying to make the other animals match the height...etc. She has fun with it!
The paint on the blocks do come off rather easily. So beware if you have young children around. We only play with this toy when my baby is sleeping.

Fabulous! . My husband rolled his eyes when he saw me wrapping these to give our 3- and 6- year-olds for Christmas. I knew what he was thinking. ("Great. An 'educational gift.'") Don't get me wrong. He went to college, but I think he's of the philosophy that Christmas magic requires fun for fun's sake. Once you start trying to give gifts that edify your kids, your motives become unpure.
Whatever! My kids both love this set! Adding animal faces to mathematical units makes them way more appealing than I expected. The kids love saying things like "mouse plus penguin equals bear," while understanding that, in the game's terms, this translates into 3 + 5 = 8. The wooden units come with a book and dry erase marker; the problems in the book become progressively more challenging. I got these for $25 and they were well worth it.
My only gripe: the glossy paint on these blocks is chipping too fast for my liking.

Great educationally but not so happy with the durability . I got these for my 3 year old son. He is not at all interested in the measuring or the numbers but he wanted to bang them together (my six year old loved doing the math problems though). Unfortunately the paint chips easily and the edges of the sticks dent significantly when hit together. I still love the idea behind the toy but not for my 3 year old who would rather bang them around a bit.

Great toy! . Great product, teaches you child really well. I like using this method too and it is a lot of fun - so to your stubborn toddler it will not feel like he is actually learning something (my child does not do well when he feel like you t=are trying to get him to study) : -)

So Much Fun! . I bought this toy for my 3 year old daughter and she loves it. The concept of addition is all we have covered with these so far and I must say the visual is SO clear! My daughter understood how to find the answers pretty quickly after I demonstrated it a few times. She loves the colors and the animals. My 2 year old son likes to sit and play with the blocks she isn't using and it helps keep him entertained, which can be challenging when I do learning activities with her since a lot of the time he doesn't find what we are doing interesting. My only complaint is that the paint scratches off very easily. Not really a big deal when you are using them gently, but I had let the kids play with them as blocks when we first got them and they toppled the towers they built a bunch of times. When I saw all the scratches that one rough play session caused I regretted letting them play with them that way and now only allow them to be used gently for their intended purpose.

Inchimals . We got this for our number crazy 4 year old grandson. He immediately put the pieces in order from smallest to largest, then stood them up to form steps from largest to smallest followed by quite a long time measuring things in the house with different pieces. We haven't done any formal "book" work yet but I see that coming as he has already compared 2 pieces to one equivalent piece, etc. He also measured each piece with an adult tape measure for accuracy to make sure each piece is what it is labeled to be...they are all accurate. The pieces do not show any paint chipping as a few reviews commented on...we just love the quality and the educational value of this toy.

Actually a really good microscope! . I had ordered a different scope a few years ago but you couldn't see a thing with it. This one actually is really good! It comes with prepared slides and you can make your own slides as well. I was impressed having experience with a "real" microscope, this is actually almost as durable and heavy. Watch out for the sharps that come with it though... I would be sure to supervise your child with it for maximal safety, fun and results!

CONSTRUCTION

The microscope is made of hard plastic with a carrying handle and microscope cover. No lens cover was a small minus. The slides are secured by two clips that swivel but no staging to adjust the slide's position on the platform. Large yellow knobs are easy to adjust. There are 3 settings 4X, 10X and 40X with the 10X eyepiece. There are two light settings: above and below the slide's stage. This operates with 3 AAA batteries.

The Experiment Manual is a 49 page full color glossy paperback with various scientific articles for exploration. The reading material is appropriate for a child in Junior High or Middle School.

USE

Just switch the lamp on and adjust your focus. There are a lot of accessories that accompany this microscope. It is easy to use and the light is actually quite bright. The image quality is excellent and the knobs make any youngster a more well prepared scientist.

OVERALL

My daughter and I had a great time looking at various items from the 4 accompanying prepared slides (Paramecium, Lining of the oral mucosa, NaCl crystals, Pollen, and the various slides that we created ourselves). For a better experience, I do recommend getting more teaching slides, as well as more new slides/cover slips.

Highly recommend this item. You will pay a little more but it's worth it.

Fantastic real microscope . I was looking around for a microscope for my daughter to use for her science project which involved investigating micro-organisms collected in various water habitats. I tried three different microscopes, and this one was by far the best. The other two microscopes she tried left much to be desired, especially in regard to the quality of the microscope itself. They were truly toys compared to this microscope. I highly recommend this microscope! The illumination of slides/samples is perfect, and reminded me of the microscopes I used in biology lab in college. It's a little pricey, but it's definitely worth the expense.

Nicely made works wonderfully! . This is my first time purchasing a microscope. I would put this in a catergory between toy and student microscope, which was perfect for my situation (nine year old). The bright colors seem to make it more toy like, but the quality is top notch and viewing slides is incredible. It is well made and seems to be durable. The two different led lights are much better than the mirror illumination. Super that you can choose which one to turn on- some models I looked at did not have this feature for some reason. The book that comes with it is a little lacking (especially when you don't know exactly how the eye piece and lenses go together- which I did not...and this was after my son removed it of course) but I am really happy with this purchase. Also, you may want to purchase additional prepared slides if you are just starting out, only comes with five. Great educational 'toy' for those parents who are sick of video games and the like. We have had lots of fun already! Reccomended.

durable does a great job! . This is a very descent microscope and does a good job. Construction is fairly sturdy and the built-in lights do a much better job than other mirror type/reflection illumination microscopes.

By far the best pre-university microscope . This is an affordable but functional microscope to thrill enquiring minds. If you buy cheaper you'll get garbage that would put anyone off microscopy for life. But this scope is astonishingly well made and robust. I can easily see water bears, protists and friends. Yet you're not paying for fancy features that only college kids would want - or be able - to use.
A bonus is tremendous customer service from the manufacturer. Two years after I bought my microscope I lost the ocular lens in a house move. When I wrote to Thames and Kosmos asking if replacements were available they sent me new one for free! Wow!

Very good product starter microscope. . This is a good starter microscope for my 8 yr old. It is better than a basic microscope and not too complicated to use. The slides provided enable us to analyze everything from a drop of water to a piece of grass. Also the magnification options are outstanding for a home microscope.

Great deal for the money . I am a recreation therapist on a children's unit and we have had a great time with this microscope. The only problem we had was with the lack of instructions that came with it and properly adjusting the eye piece. Overall, this is a great buy.

Not a toy! . The quality of this microscope is very high. This is considered by Amazon as a toy, but it isn't a toy. It is a great quality entry level microscope. I highly recommend it. Bear this in mind when you buy it - that is is not junky and cheap. If you want a throw away junky toy, don't get this one! it comes with all the slides and coverslips you'll need to quite a bit of learning.

Granny's view of product . I purchased this from the reviews of others and sent it to my grandsons. They love it which is great. I am more impressed with the company. I had a problem with the first robot and contacted the company and they sent another product without question. I didn't have the receipt or box since my grandsons live in another state. I must say that I will be a customer of this company because I know they "value me" as a "satisfied" customer.

Great toy but broke early . This toy was very well received by my 5 year old. The directions were well beyond him, but that didn't deter him. Unfortunately, the associated worm gear that drives the robot broke in about 5 minutes. I called the company who were very helpful and promised a new one by mail (still waiting). Even without the worm gear, the parts were easy to use(and of course scattered about the house). Overall, presuming I get the replacement worm gear, I would recomend this toy. It offers lots of imagination driven possibilities.

Design flaw? . The gear from the handheld remote/motor that propelled the rest of the robot stripped with less than an hour of use. Thus, the power would spin the first gear, but that gear would not catch to turn any subsequent gears and the robot would not move. It was a lot of fun the first time, but it's just a statue if it won't move. I had to send it back.

Not bad could be better... . I bought this for my 6 year old son. He is quite intelligent for his age and capable of reading directions, but he will not even attempt this without my help. The first time I put one together, I understood why... even for the adult, there are directions that can be confusing. Plus, once it is complete, it can be precarious; a wheel or gear might fall off. You can't really expect a young child to use this independently and continue to want to do it. There is a cool factor but know it will require you, the adult, every time.

Disappointing . Learning Resources Gearbotics Robot Motorized Set This potentially great toy was a great disappointment because the gears broke after the first half hour of play. After reading other reviews, I saw that this is the normal situation with this toy. The plastic gears shredded into a pile of plastic shavings in the clear plastic "motor box." My grandson can still build robots with the parts (with a little adult help); but the motor doesn't work at all. This product is not worth the price and doesn't live up to the advertisement.

Amazing fun . We bought this for our five year old grandson, so he needed a little help, but he quickly caught on. You can build any old robot or follow the directions to make nifty ones like the motorcycle robot. After a two day blitz after Christams, he put it aside to play with other things, but he keeps coming back to it. Great for inquisitive kids who like to know how things work.

Cons Review

Hours of fun unless it breaks! . My 5-year-old son loves this robot. He plays with it for hours, building and rebuilding. However, it was an extreme disappointment when the first robot's motor broke on the first use. We returned the product and exchanged it for a new one. We have had it for a couple of months and it is still working. Keeping our fingers crossed because he loves it!

Great Gift For a Young Scientist . I am very pleased with the Smithsonian Optics900X Microscope in Carry Case that I purchased for my 10 year old Grandson for Christmas. It was with great joy that I watched him open this gift and immediately begin to explore the microscopic world around us.I was even more pleased to be able to purchase this on Amazon because such products are virtually unavailable in regular stores. It is a shame that all the attention is given to video games and such rather than educational products involving science. The carry case is an added bonus that helps keep all the components organized. I would recommend having prepared slides included with this product. I did purchase prepared slides from another vendor and that is the only reason this product received 4 rather than 5 stars. I would highly recommend this product for intermediate elementary aged school children as an introduction to microscopic studies.

Cons Review

just a toy . We purchased this microspcope for our 9 year old so we weren't expecting it to be a professional tool. We are very disappointed by how it will only focus in the lowest setting. Controls are not tight. It is clearly meant to be just a toy and nothing else. A waste of money and the compnay is arguing over a return of the item.

BROKEN . This item arrived in the box as described. We put it out on X-mas eve for our daughter to find from Santa in the morning. She found it and loved it - until we out the batteries in and it did not work. After inspecting the unit I found a small wire was broken from the contact. This would not be such a big problem (easy enough to re-solder) except that it could not be threaded back into the housing due to the item being assembled. What a let down for a child in the AM!

Overall this is a cheaply made item. But something for a little more in terms of cost, or buy much cheaper (you will get about the same quality).

The one saving grace is that Amazon & the seller took back the item and credited my account. I have since bought another one ($20 more) and am waiting for it to be delivered.

Great first time microscope . I ordered this item for my son for Christmas (yep, getting an EARLY jump on the holiday! hehe), and I can't wait for him to get it out and start experimenting with it! He's going to be soo thrilled and happy with it!

volume can be easily fixed great product for an interested kid! . Our whole family loves this one. Yes, the volume is loud but by simply taping an index card over the speaker it can be muffled and still be understood perfectly, really. I found it loud at first but we don't even use the cover anymore now that we have two little boys in the house.

The product is loaded with information about each planet giving kids choices to find out about history, distance from the sun, size, gravity/mass, year/day, temperature, space visits, moons, and other fun facts for each planet. They also make it easy for the child to understand by often making comparisons to earth. At anytime the child may choose to listen to something else by simply pressing the easy to use flat touch pad which is plastic and easy to clean. When talking about a planet or moon the picture lights up. If the child chooses to quiz his or herself and gets and answer wrong the product will correct them and ask them again it seems within 10 or less questions.

This product also happens to be lightweight, durable, and easy to clean if needed. It is worth mentioning that this product has an interface that is easier to use than a leappad. My boy was already very interested in the solar system but this took it to another level of fascination.

Interactive planetarium . Wonderful toy for a child with an active mind. A bit expensive but worth it for a child who has this interest.

Worth it but you can find them at a thrift store for less . I have found several of these at a thrift store. They are great fun and my 5 year olds are obsessed with them. The speakers accent is a bit distracting but it isn't bad.

Cons Review

Cool till it dies and the company won't help you . This toy is very educational and includes a lot of information about space. Unfortunately, it's not very durable. It was treated with care, but the electronic board has obviously gone kaput because you can only turn it on now with the Reset button. And after you do that, none of the buttons respond at all. If you push the ON/OFF button, it tells you it's turning off. Then you can turn it back on with the Reset button again. Not a whole lot of fun or education. That's all it does now.

I wrote to the company, Scientific Toys, and they told me to take it back to the store. I wrote again and said it had been past 30 days and asked if they could help me. No response. I wrote again and got no response. I wrote one final time and said that I would like to be able to leave a good review on Amazon about their company and product, and that I would wait a few days to hear from them before posting a review. That was about 2 weeks ago.

So I wouldn't buy this product (pretty expensive for something that doesn't work at all!) or any toy from this company since they don't stand behind their products. They just ignore you.

Too bad.Scientific INTERACTIVE PLANETARIUM (WITH TRY ME)

Very loud interactive planetarium . I am very disappointed with this product.
The volume is not adjustable, and the default sound setting is so loud that it can be heard in another room, even with a door closed.

Electronic toy voices are occasionally annoying or difficult to understand, this is the case here. So, needing to have something repeated... loudly... can "get on your nerves".

I will be more careful in the future and not assume that all speaking electronic toys come with adjustable volume.
Buyers beware!

Scientific Interactive Planetarium . This toy was recommended for children between 5 - 12 years old. I bought it for my grandson, who just turned 5. The toy was quite boring and way too advanced for a 5 year old - even one as interested in Space and planets as this one. I would NOT recommend it for anyone.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION . I am very sorry to write this negative review, but wish someone had, before I bought this globe. I have one, a Replogle 12" black background world globe, which I bought at an Antiques store. I LOVE it. I wanted this one, which appears to be identical (except for updating, of course) and is illuminated. So far, so good. However, much to my dismay, this globe does not 'tilt' on it's axis! Who wants a world globe that you can't tip and tilt and explore? I don't. For $85.00 I think they should include the extra 'tilt' bar! If not, I think they should state that in the description. I am editing this review because I don't want to be too harsh on the seller. He explained, (after a bad rating) why the globe does not have the 'rotating' function. It was MY mistake, in not doing more 'research' on Illuminated globes, I guess, but I still feel it should be mentioned in the description; especially given the cost of return shipping, and restocking fee. As the seller admitted, not everyone knows all about Globes, as he does. This Globe barely left the box before I saw my mistake; and it cost me apx. $30. that's a pricey mistake.
So, if you don't know about this, do some research!

Exceeded expectations... and I have six illuminated globes and none of them "Tilt.." . On the shelf above my desk hooked up to a foot switch I seven illuminated globes. Two illuminated constellation globes, Uncle Milton's "Moon in my room" with the guts ripped out and replaced with mini LEDs hanging on the wall, a medium sized antique-look globe, a five-inch blue physical relief globe, and now this globe. All but the five inch models run on LEDs so they pull under 10 watts total by the way. To modify this one for LED I had to find the smallest LED I could and shave a tiny bit off the edges of the bottom with a pocketknife by the way, but I'm trying really hard to stay on Al Gore's good graces and LEDs use less than half the juice of even CFLs.

This globe is the nicest of my collection by far, and the most unique globe I've ever seen. Almost the size of a beach ball, so there's room for all kinds of details on the globe, including stuff like prevailing ocean currents. It even comes with a booklet explaining longitude and latitude and such. Looks great in the dark. Of my three full sized illuminated globes (three are only five inches, the other two about eight inches), none of them have a tilt feature. They're positioned on the earth's standard axis, but no tilt and I think the wiring running through the base would preclude that option, so looking over what's currently the only other review I figured I'd add in yet another two cents on the point.

Looking over my reviews, someone left a comment describing the globe they received as paper that doesn't match evenly at the equator. Uneven quality or some other explanation springs to mind as an explanation, but looking at my globe closely it's unusual that the equator isn't covered by a band or tape layer like my other globes, though from any distance the slight gap looks just like an equatorial line. Looking over the whole globe closely my two printed hemispheres do meet precisely on each side of the equator.
