This review is from : Smithsonian Smithsonian Micro Prehistoric Sea Monsters
Bought it for self interest . I used to enjoy these pets as a kid, and I found this for 12.99 at a local Micheal's shop. The instructions were simple. Simply wash the sand before putting it into the aquarium, then put distilled water (I put bottled spring water) and then toss in half of the eggs. I waited less than 24 hours there they were! This is the most exciting pet to enjoy.Ignore the 1 star review, it has zero logic. It's true that family of triops do come from sea water.Sit down and enjoy your new pet! You won't regret it!The package comes with limited supply of food; however if you want to continue providing them with food supply; go to your nearest local pet shop. Sinking pellets (smallest ones you can get) are the best way to go.Have fun!

sea monsters . I LOVE THESE THINGS! They are so much fun and my children loved them. perfect first pet for little ones

Smithsonian Smithsonian Micro Prehistoric Sea Monsters Reviews
Triops are not "Sea" Monsters . Though it is marketed as such, this product cannot be educational- Triops are not "Sea" monsters. They live in fresh water, in ephemeral habitats, and they are crustaceans.

Buy them somewhere else, this packet is misleading.

I can DIG-IT! . Just so you know: I am a classical archaeologist and a Latin teacher. These games are great: the graphics are engaging; the information about how archaeologists work is on point; and the historical setting is accurate. Students of all ages can learn about archaeology AND the ancient world. I teach 7th-12th graders and I would use this product with ALL of my classes -- anything that can supplement and enrich what we are doing in the classroom is worth trying. My students are eager to learn and these games make learning fun.

Roman Town: The Premiere Archaeology Computer Game Reviews
Fund and educational . I got a copy for my niece who is 10 she liked it and was able to incorporate it in her report on Rome and lets her classmates try it. I'm a hit with her and her parents!

Roman Town: The Premiere Archaeology Computer Game Opinions
Roman Town is Terrific! . Roman Town is a terrific tool for teaching kids about archeology -- and it's fun, too! The game is extremely interactive, and explains the relevance and structure of archeological tools, processes, and treasures.

I picked up a copy of Roman Town for my 7-year-old niece, and strongly recommend it.

Great For Playing and Learning! . I have this game for my 7-year old daughter and she loves it, but I must confess I have played the entire game myself! Typically I would recommend this for 8 and up due to the reading level required for the roman terminology. In addition, I have a 5-year boy, and the careful mouse control required for the reconstruction puzzles and reading make it too advanced for him, but he likes to set the diggers in the beginning of the game and play Calculi.

Both of my kids have learned so much about Roman life playing this game! A word of warning - the first time through my daughter tried to breeze through without reading the instructions set out clearly on the screen. This made playing some of the games more difficult. So reading directions became a lesson too!

I would recommend this for both parents who want a computer game that is actually fun and educational. I would definitely recommend it for teachers and home schoolers too. I've talked to several friends who teach latin and ancient history for 6th graders/middle school, and they have this game in the classroom and the students love it! I hope the program designers are working on a sequel - maybe Greek Town? Or Egypt Town?

Roman Town game . Imagine if Latin teachers in the past had had a copy of Roman Town! This is a fun, attractive, intuitive game that will entertain as well as teach archeology to most anyone from elementary school on through adulthood. In fact after a half hour or so I had to relinquish the computer to my grandchildren so that they could play. Who knew archeology could be so much fun!

Alan Melvin

#1 Archaeology Educational Game for all ages . Roman Town is a fabulous educational tool for all ages striving to learn more about Archeology. I have purchased 2 games already and are getting great feedback from all who play. The Game is an educational engaging experience and FUN! - Thanks. for more information go to [...]

Great game for kids. Lots of learning and fun. . I enjoyed playing the game (I'm an adult) but can see how children could learn a lot about archaeology.

This review is from : MAGIC GARDEN from Schylling Toys
Use hotglue to help stabilize . We were glad to read other reviews to know we weren't the only ones who found this product to be very tipsy. Before pouring the liquid into the tray we hot glued all paper parts to the tray with small dots of hot glue. It worked really well to keep the pieces of paper from tipping and the liquid was still able to be absorbed by the paper.

MAGIC GARDEN from Schylling Toys Reviews
Poorly designed - stick with ToySmith . We had a lot of lucky with the Christmas tree from ToySmith and my daughter enjoyed it, so while doing some last minute Christmas shopping I picked this up. It was VERY difficult to get any of the pieces to stay in place, and I LOVE to put things together. Even my husband had problems getting anything to stay in place. We finally resorted to using scissors to get things to be the correct size. The tray is SUPER flimsy (not at all like the hard plastic from the ToySmith Christmas tree), the grass strips are way to long, the base of the trees is too wide to fit in the circle, the slots in the two tree pieces are cut wide so they collapse and do not stay together, the mountain does not fit the couture of the hole provided no matter how you fold it, troughs for the liquid are too shallow, and the whole tray bows so even on our flat countertop the pieces fall over. We put it together (after about 30 minute of trimming and manipulating) on the counter before bed, poured the liquid in the best we could, and went to bed, when I woke up both of the trees had fallen over. ARGG! The flip side is that it did grow, but the snow is not on the top of the mountain (only the lower 2/3), which does not make sense and the middle part of the garden did not grow at all even though I made sure all the piece had adequate liquid. I think I will stick with the ToySmith version. The tray is hard plastic, and the is a perfect x cut in it to put the tree in so it stay. That product can be easily moved - not true of this one. It is headed for the trash. :(

MAGIC GARDEN from Schylling Toys Opinions
Awesome Classic! . I've been getting these since I was a little kid and they are amazing!! So beautiful, so cool to watch, a great gift. Of course it's fragile, it's a one shot deal, not meant to last. You do it, enjoy it a day or two, and pitch it. Maybe get another one in a couple years as a kick. My mom had them when she was little too. They're just plain fun. I would highly recommend them.

flimsy . It's neat and pretty, but a constant source of frusteration because the card board trees and other card board land scape figures keep falling over. Once they fall over, the whole thing is ruined. Maybe if somebody glued them up it would work. My daughter loved it while it lasted. (Less then a week.)

Great fun! . My daughter got this as an early Christmas Present and it looked cheap to me and I told her not to get her hopes up. I was wrong.. within 2 hours the first blossoms arrived and then by the next morning we were soooo excited to see what had grown. How fun is this!! I have been taking pictures just to show it's progress.
Wonderful item for my 7 year old as well as the entire family.

Beautiful (when glued) . Use a low temperature hot glue to secure the paper pieces to the base. The low temperature hot glue will insure the plastic tray does not melt. We cut the pieces to fit exactly and glued the tree bases together before securing them to the plastic tray. This was a project for my 6 year old while studying Japan. She LOVED it!! I had not seen her that excited about any other craft activity. The crystals formed just like the photo on the box. The trees are incredible! It has been on display for one month and looks good still.

Cons Review

Tears follow excitement . This garden becomes beautiful overnight. However, the first time someone walks past the table where it is placed, it falls apart! We thought someone had accidentaly crashed into my daughter's first magic garden so we bought her a replacement - same story. This item is so fragile it is bound to dissappoint.

worth it . My 4-year-old daughter got this for a gift. This takes steady hands. The box says 8 and up, and that's true, little ones will need an adult or older child - the paper trees and mountain don't fit very well in the plastic tray and it was frustrating getting them to stand up. In the end half the mountain wasn't in the tray. After the assembly I was ready for the whole thing to be a wash, but we were all surprised when it grew! Totally worth the effort. My expectations were to keep it a couple of days and toss it out, so the fragileness of the finished product doesn't bother me.

It is magical but fragile . I bought this for myself to put in my office and it was great! It's very easy to put together, but as mentioned, it's fragile and can easily fall over. Because mine is in an office, no one bothered it and it lasted for months. Everyone kept coming by to see if it had grown more. I wouldn't recommend it for children because it takes steady hands to make the trees stand up.

Magic in a box! . We loved it! My daughter received it for Christmas 2010 and all of the family was enthralled. The structures can fall over if knocked so I believe the instructions tell you to place the garden somewhere stable and secure. If you do that, then grow the garden, you won't be disappointed. It was really fun and beautiful. Even when one of the trees fell over, (we decided to move it away from the 2 rambunctious cats) it still kept a lot of its 'foliage'. I plan on getting it for other children on my holiday gift list this year.

This review is from : GeoSafari Fossil Collection
Neat! . ... at least, that's what the eight-year-old me would have said.

My little brother is in elementary school, and he's currently experiencing the same "rock collection" phase I went through at his age. Since it's a more productive and educational interest than cartoons or robots that turn into cars (or cartoons about robots that turn into cars), it's an interest I'm trying to nurture.

This is a small collection, but it makes a nice beginner's kit for fossil identification. The specimens are conveniently sized, well-defined (no odd bits or obscure fragments), and easy to identify using the chart included. Being so basic, this probably wouldn't make a good stand alone birthday or holiday gift, but might go nicely with, say, a DVD or book about the prehistoric world.

Fossilization, extinction, and "millions and millions of years" are hard concepts for children to understand, and fossils hold a certain air of mystique for fascinated children. Books and documentaries are great ways for them to learn about the prehistoric world, but actually holding a fossil in their hands has an added impact. My brother loves his mini fossil collection, and I recommend this product as a gift for any child who shares similar interests with my younger brother and eight-year-old me.

GeoSafari Fossil Collection Reviews
Small but decent . The only surprising aspect of this item is its size -- not very big. Some of the objects are nondescript, but I suppose that's "what you get" with fossils.

GeoSafari Fossil Collection Opinions
Small ... and Broken . Well ... I really should have seen it coming with the price. Just be aware the fossils are very small ... like about an inch. Will have to see if the kids still enjoy them. At first I thought the shark tooth was missing. Then I realized the little bits and pieces of what looked like dirt in the box were a very small and very broken old tooth.

fossil fun . small, mostly marine fossils, but for the price you can't beat it. nice sample of fossils, great educational value for the money

Elenco Snap Circuits UC-30 Upgrade Kit SC-100 to SC-300 Reviews
Keeps her attention . An add-on to the 11 yr olds set. She has fun doing all the projects. She figures them out and assembles them on her own. The one con: it doesn't explain the HOW and WHY it works.

Elenco Snap Circuits UC-30 Upgrade Kit SC-100 to SC-300 Opinions
Snap Circuits are awesome! . We bought this to add to my 9-year-old son's Snap Circuits Jr. set. Wow, we thought the first set was fun but with this added kit it got even better! He can do this all on his own and has so much fun making things. So far his favorites have been the AM radio and the radio announcer. This keeps him entertained for hours. Although this kit is new he has had snap circuits for six months and he is still playing with them regularly. This is a GREAT toy for a kid interested in building or science. I LOVE THIS TOY!

Good toy for the science-minded . My seven year old son loved the Snap Circuit Jr that he received for Christmas; completed all the electronic experiments in just about 2 months. So it made sense to purchase the UC-30 Upgrade Kit SC-100 to SC-300 and see where his love of electronics would take him. He makes his own experiments now and still plays with both sets every few days. I worried that the pieces would break easily, but that seems to have been an unfounded concern. The storage trays make it easy to keep all the pieces together, although the cardboard boxes are really beat up. Next purchase: hard plastic carrying case.

Hit the jackpot with this present! . I have bought this for 5 of my 9 grandchildren, and they love it. It is educational, fun, and the directions are easy to follow.

Cool product . My boys got this upgrade for Christmas (6 and 8). It's a nice addition to the Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 kit and I'm considering the next upgrade. If something goes wrong with your kit, Elenco has great customer service and you can order individual parts from their website.

His favorite toy! . I got the original SC-100 kit for my boyfriend's 7 year-old nephew for his birthday in October and everyone raved about it. Apparently, he would get caught "circuiting" under the blankets at night when he was supposed to be in bed. It seemed only natural to get him one of the additional kits for Christmas so I opted for the upgrade. I figured this would add a few more dimensions without pigeon-holing (as I was afraid the more specific kits might do) the experience. So far so good! He spent 3 hours on Christmas playing with his new circuits and I heard tales of robot battles and other fun. I also got the AC adapter so his parents didn't have to keep buying new batteries because apparently the circuits just tear through them. He told me his next step is to try to create a hole to the space-time continuum so at least he's got a good start.

Very Fun and Educational . We bought this kit for our 12 year old daughter and she has had many hours of enjoyment with it. This is an upgrade to the basic kit and lets her expand the projects of that kit. She has learned a lot and had a blast doing so! Highly recommend this!

Electronics - a snap!! . So glad that I came across snap circuits. I bought the original kit for my son last year and this upgrade for his 6th birthday. He can't wait to do these projects and can follow the easy directions and put them together himself. I just check that they are put together properly before he puts the batteries in. At 6 years old he knows more about electronics than most adults

Great fun and learning circuits . I bought this for my 10 yr daughter as a christmas gift and I have to say we both enjoyed working in the circuits. She loved it. Its a cool way of teaching young ones the basics of electricity and electric circuits. Not all circuits worked but most did. You will not regret buying this product

Endless Combinations of Fun and Learning . I purchased these weighted numbers for my grandchildren in conjunction with the pan balance. It is a perfect learning toy for a toddler that grows w him/her. There are multiple uses for the weighted numbers... if you purchase a second set the child can be introduced to number recognition by tangibly finding the matching number or placing like numbers on opposite sides of the balance scale to see if they are even and match! As their skills grow the child can do number combinations i.e. 4 and 3 for 7. An art project can also be incorporated by tracing the numbers with a pencil. The uses are limited only by your imagination.

Learning Resources Weighted Numbers , Set Of 10, red and blue Reviews
good for children . This product will be used in a classroom. Hopefully the children will be able to relate to the difference in weight being more or less when compared to another number(s).

This review is from : Elenco TriBotz Kit
Great entry level robotics kit. . I bought this for my 15 year old nephew for Christmas. He built it in a couple of hours with some help. It took a bit of troubleshooting since he (we) ignored the errata sheet at first. Well, that's part of the fun. He went on to experiment with it. It comes with full schematics and theory of operation for someone to learn beyond the simple assembly and emperical experimentation.

Elenco TriBotz Kit Reviews
A good idea... . I wanted to like this toy. It looked like a lot of fun, and it was educational also. However, after we put it together, it never worked right. We called the company and got a replacement part, and it still didn't work right. I don't know if the problem was a fundamental flaw in the design of the toy, or if we just got a defective one. We returned the product and have not decided whether or not to order another one.

Elenco TriBotz Kit Opinions
disappointing . I got this for my 25 year old boyfriend. He put it together in about an hour and tested out the different modes. Since you can't program it, he's lost interest.

A quick fun project with a lesson . My husband helped our 6 year old make this. It took them less than 20 minutes and they placed the final prduct in the freezer to make it set up more quickly. They discussed solids vs liquids and enjoyed a quick little lesson while making some very pretty (pink with silver sparkles) fun-shaped soaps. Like most kids' soaps, they do not last long but they are cute, fun, and girlie if you have a little one who enjoys making such things!

Great . Bought it as a joke gift for my 26 year old brother, so it wasn't used for a kid... he's a chemistry major so I thought it would be funny! Works pretty well

Very Cool . Gave this to my 9 year old daughter for xmas - she stopped opening presents so she could put it together! She loves it and takes it apart and puts it back together because she is fascinated by the anatomy of the frog. Super cool. And her little sister (age 7) got the shark. I would recommend this puzzle to any one who wants to get a kid excited about biology and anatomy.

4D Vision Frog Anatomy Model Reviews
Good model . This model was a good alternative to dissection for my 12 year old girl (homeschool zoology). Looks good, anatomically correct, sturdy, reasonably well built. Takes some dexterity to put together, but wasn't a problem for her. Materials that came with it were good, including basics of major organs, plus a great labeled diagram of a frog skeleton. The "Uncover a Frog" book was a good companion to the model.

4D Vision Frog Anatomy Model Opinions
HArd to get together and doesn't stay . If you want this for a one to two time use...perfect. If you want to be able to put together and set on counter if it gets bumped etc. it falls apart. My daughter became frustrated because she couldn't close it once she put all the peices together. She had to leave one out to get it to close and then the leg and arms kept falling off. If you want to treat it like a mister potato head toy this is cool and fun.

Cool and cute! . The dolphin was such a hit, that I had to get the frog too. Already had the Uncover a Frog book. Great companion!Uncover a Frog (Uncover Books)

Big Frog . It's bigger than it looks!
Although my daughter is only 6, she wants to be a vet so this was right up her alley. Her 8 year old brother had to help with some of the construction though.
Very good product and well made

Very good for classroom use as well as at home . We purchased 6 of these for classroom use with second graders, one for each class. We are very happy with them, and the students loved seeing the ants work. Read the directions in advance and set up the ant farm a few days in advance of the arrival of the ants. They seem better than the tall narrow ant farms. As a matter of fact, one of the teachers has the ants still living and burrowing at least 4 months later. She feeds them Girl Scout cookies!

They were neatly packed and arrived in good conditon too.

GeoSafari Ant Zone Reviews
Excellent purchase . This was so much fun for my eight year old who's obsessed with insects. The plastic container was good and sturdy and the fact that the ants could roam freely rather than be squashed between to plastic sheets, made them all the more entertaining.
He's playing with it as I type, so I can't think of a better recommendation than that!

GeoSafari Ant Zone Opinions
Amazing look at ants! . I bought this for my Grandson's 6th Birthday. We love it !!!!I have just as much fun with it as he does ! The Ant Zone was delivered very promptly, and is even better than I imagined. This is a much better way to watch the ants interact, than the small square ant farms. I'm even considering ordering one for my 86 year old Mother !!!

Not as good as it sounds . My 8 year old daughter requested this ant farm. It came quickly and the ants (about 25) we ordered came in about 1 1/2 weeks. We prepared the habitat for ants per the instructions. The ants weren't a problem at all to put in. We did put them in the refrigerator for 7 mins to slow them down. The first day or two the ants did explore the habitat somewhat. They went down some of the tunnels we started for them and extended some of the tunnels. In all they added about 2 inches in tunnels before they stopped. For the most part the ants kept trying to get out of the habitat (they can't get out though) by trying to climb up the plastic wall. After 10 days of this it was pathetic to watch them continually climb up the wall only to fall down. I was considering letting them loose outside. But by the 2 week mark they started dying off. Every day we looked in there were more dead ants. By 3 weeks they were all dead. We gave them fresh water everyday and tried a couple of different foods (once per week per instructions) and kept it clean. The only food they ate was a little bit of a sunflower seed. My daughter wanted me to write this review so other kids wouldn't waste their money on this.

Ant Safari . My daughter just loves this ant farm. She waters the ants every day and checks to see what progress and tunnels they have made overnight. She is really amazed at what the ants do and you can see them in action.

Her dad,
Bob

Excellent Educational Tool . Greetings...

I never had an ant farm as a kid, so this was an experience for my children as well as myself. Antzone is an excellent product. It is well-made; it would be nice if the tank were bigger, but it's no big deal. Once the ants get going, you can watch them in great detail. The cage is designed well, and no ants will escape--even with the cover off.

The ants arrived within 10 days of sending out the coupon. Inside the Antzone is a form to fill out and send back to the company (with $2.00 postage); you'll receive a plastic test tube with 20+ harvester ants in it. Be very careful when you open it, they're very eager to get out.

Harvester can BITE and STING, so be very cautious and don't let the kids stick their fingers in the tank.

It was amazing to see how fast these little guys worked. In 3 days they've dug an extensive network of tunnels.

The best!!! . When I got my ant farm, I was eger to get my ants. But instead of paying $2 I had to pay $4 witch didn't matter much. Befor I got my ants, I studied the ant farm. These were the best that you can buy. The ants can roam in a larger space unlike thoughs 2D ones.

Very Fun....My Kids LOVE it!! . I bought this for my son's 7th birthday, and all 3 of my children love it!! the only down side is waiting 4+ weeks for the ants so I built our ant farm and went outside and got some ants I even got a queen and they started working right away, making tunnels, "fixing up their house" it's very cool to see them working, and building.

NOT escape proof!! . What appeared to be a perfect and happily different ant farm is far from it. This ant farm looked great for the kids in my day care to enjoy; the fact that it is 3 dimensional instead of 2 was a big draw for me. It is supposed to be escape proof. Far from it!! I can't even bring it in my house!!

The plastic is flimsy and the viewing glass appeared to be more of a cap but is not. The cap sits lightly on the top and the ventilation holes allow ample room for escape. Any number of small bugs could get in or out of there. We actually spent time capturing our ants, approximately 2 - 3 dozen, instead of ordering them - and there are none left in the ant farm.

Bottom line: Save your money and order a fully enclosed, truly escape proof ant farm. Great concept, poor execution. I'm not even sure I can give this an A for effort...a C- for effort at best.

Cheap plastic torn on AntZone . I've just set the AntZone up and am not optimistic. The plastic is flimsy and was a little cracked at the bottom edge, so a lot of sand leaked out. I taped it up before putting the ants in, but that probably wouldn't have been a problem. Most of the ants are dead or dying. It probably didn't help that they traveled via mail during a heat wave. We'll see what the others do, and hope they don't figure out a way out!
