This review is from : Learning Resources Desktop Abacus
not just for kids . My husband is a huge math nerd, and I got him this abacus to mess around with for his birthday. It came with a nice, clear set of instructions on how to do basic mathematical operations using the abacus, and he was able to extrapolate to much more complex operations. Catproof.
Learning Resources Desktop Abacus Reviews
Great simple starter abacus . We are using this abacus to supplement my first grader's math skills. Its been working really well so far as she likes the tactile feel of using it to add and subtract. Its a great kids abacus, although I am learning along with my child as I never used one growing up. My 2yo also likes to get in on the fun. RightStart Math required an abacus which started this journey and its really been more rewarding than I expected.
Learning Resources Desktop Abacus Opinions
Flimsy . This abacus is flimsy and each time my kids or I touch it, I fully expect the thing to break. I've used the abacus with my older child for homeschooling and teaching basic numeracy; however, it's cheaply made and I would prefer larger beaded abacus to use with my younger child. If I could go back in time, I would purchase a wooden Slavonic abacus.
fun way to learn math . I bought it for my 4 year old; she already learned how to use it. I like this abacus better than the multicolored ones, it may be easier for decimal system problems.
Desktop Abacus . This product has exceeded my expectations of what I needed it to do. My son is now interested in math, and the colored beads in the denominations of 5 have been very helpful in our current math program. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a visual aid for mathematics.
Abacus . Really working well for my 5 yr old granddaughter for addition & subtraction - makes it more concrete & easier to understand concept of 10.
Perfectly fine starter abacus . I purchased this for my kinder/1st grade daughter. It is quite thin plastic and seems flimsy on first inspection, but it has held up fine to daily use. It is perfect for teaching regrouping and my daughter can now do significantly more difficult problems with it. She absolutely loves it and chooses to do all her math work, no matter how simple, with it. I think it will last plenty long enough to serve its purpose.
Flimsy is the word . Bought this for my son but am returning it without opening the clear plastic wrapper. It's very flimsy and will look for one with wood beads and better construction. I did like that 5 are one color, 5 are the other on this one vs 10 of the same color across the row but once I saw it in person I vote thumbs down.
Good but flimsy . I wish I would have paid a bit more for a better one, as this one is a bit cheaply made. It has held up, but I only let my kids use it for school time. I would like to let them use it for playing on their own too, but it seems like it will break.

Cons Review
It's Not A Toy . I hate having to label this a toy. It is not a toy it is an educational item. I bought 2 of these for my kids and they have used them often to work on improving their math skills. I recommend it for anyone out there that wants to help their child out when they are learning their math skills.Add On!!!

This review is from : Small World Express the Pluses and the Minuses
works for some kids . I knew when I purchased this toy for my 5 year old son that is was hard to read. Knowing his personality and what toys he has been attracted to, I bought it anyway. He loves it. It doesn't bother him at all that it's difficult to read. I think it's good because it makes him work harder and think more, the answer doesn't come quickly like in an electronic game. He quickly loses interest in electronic games, wouldn't tolerate flash cards so I'm glad that this alternative is available.
Small World Express the Pluses and the Minuses Reviews
Hard to see numbers. . I had one like this as a kid and it was very helpful. I bought one for my son and daughter. They don't seem as interested, but the numbers are a little hard to see when you push the buttons. I guess it could be because I'm getting older!
They have used it for reference on occasion, but not really wanting to use it for the memorization.
Small World Express the Pluses and the Minuses Opinions
Just like I remember! . I remember these from my elementary school days and was really happy to find one while looking for something to use for my son's basic addition and subtraction fact drilling. I saw the twist and shout thing, but I didn't want to throw yet another noisy, battery operated toy at my children, especially for educational purposes. I'm so glad I went for the throw back! Yes, the answers are a little hard to see behind the opaque buttons, but if used in a brightly lit room the numbers become perfectly clear. A little "problem solving," if you could even call it that, and you're good to go. My kids were very excited about this, especially when I told them I used one when I was little, and I had to referee which child could hold it to avoid fighting!
Math made easy . This product was just how I remembered it when I used it 30 years ago. Yes the answers are hard to see until you press down real hard. But that is how it was 30 years ago and I did not expect anything different. I would recommend this product to anyone trying to teach their kids addition and subtraction. My children look at it like a computer and love playing with it. It gives them instant answers when they press down and they like that satisfaction.
awesome educational tool . I didn't purchase this for fun value, but, it's educational value is awesome! Even my 4 year old walks around pretending it's a calculator all the time! He's learning and is having too much fun to know it. Good purchase!
Great learning toy! . Bought this for my niece, as I had one similar as a child and she loves it as much as I did! It's a fun way to learn addition and subtraction!
Plus-Minus Chart Toy . Big problem... the answers are not printed on the key above. They are underneath the key, so that when you depress it, you can see through. The problem is the numbers on top are over the number underneath in many cases, which makes the answer harder to see. I really prefer the ones where you can clearly see the answer print above.
Useless . I was so excited to receive this to help my 5 year old with her addition and subtraction. You are supposed to press on the button and "magically" the correct answer appears.

No magic here! The answers are simply underneath and as you push, the correct answers underneath are supposed to become more transparent or visible (similar to using tracing paper and placing it over something you want to trace. The closer the tracing paper is to the image you want to copy, the more clearly you can see it.) Well, neither my daughter nor I could even make out what the answers were. How are we supposed to read THROUGH a plastic button? It made no sense.

This was really a disappointment and such a waste!
Great math tool for young children . It is a good educational toy for young children to learn simple addition and subtraction. It looks very durable too!

Cons Review
Exactly like the one I had as a kid! . This is exactly like one I had as a kid. There are no electronics to break or wear out. Some of the reviews said they couldn't see the numbers... yes, you can. The numbers don't light up, but they are there and little fingers and eyes have no problem seeing the digits. My kids (ages 3,5,7,7&9) have a wii, but we try not to get then every little fad learning game that comes along. These are great for them to learn number patterns and how the equations are related. I would recommend this toy to any one whose kids don't need the latest and greatest to be entertained!

This review is from : Scooby-Doo! Math Fact Finder Addition / Subtraction
Somewhat helpful . When I bought this for my first grader, I was under the impression that this was a pack of 2 charts. It's not. It's a single, 2-sided slidechart, about the size of a large index card. To me, this was a bit overpriced.

But, the real question is; Does it teach kids their math facts? Well, we're still working on it. I keep this in the backseat pocket of the car so that my child can go over a number family on the way to school. He seems to enjoy reading aloud the equations. It works better as something they can do themselves, not something you can quiz them with, as you would with flashcards.

I would not recommend this singly to help children with their math facts. A combination of things will help them learn. This slidechart could work well as part of that learning process.

But again, I feel this was overpriced. I am still looking for that "Dream Device" to help my child master his math facts! Hope this helps you in your search.

This review is from : Lamaze Board Book, Counting Zoo
Animal farm sounds . Our 3 month old daughter loves looking at this - the bright colors esp. Whenever she gets agitated, we show her this book, and she quitens down immediately! She in fact reaches out and flips the pages, though I'm pretty sure she isn't aware of what she is actually doing. All in all, a great buy. P.S. - the book doesnt have audio sounds, just pictures of animals and the sound they make.
Lamaze Board Book, Counting Zoo Reviews
Where are the sounds? . This is a cute book, but I was expecting real sounds with it. It has the picture of the animal and written sound that it makes, but doesn't have a press button to hear the sound.
Lamaze Board Book, Counting Zoo Opinions
My granddaughters first books . This is the cutest little book. My daughter was so excited I gave it to my granddaughter for Christmas. The baby is just 4 months old but my daughter is showing her books already. Thank you very much.
it's missing.... . a bus! i got the book for my friends daughter because of all the traveling her parents do, mainly by bus. other than that, it's great!
ok . Alittle overpriced in my opinion. Heavy pages and great little book. Too pricey for what it is.
Actually thought there was sound with it. Would like to have seen the inside before buying.
Great Book For Baby . Purchased for my 8 month old grandson; he loved it when I made the sounds in the book - the smile on his face said it all!
no sound . very disappointed I thought there would have sounds but the only sounds come from you. Great book for illustration but it won't entertain your child.. you have to be the narrator
Great for teething babies! . My babies are teething and this is a great idea to keep them entertained without ruining a hard cover style book. They are light and great to connect to car seat for entertainment in car too!

Cons Review
No sounds . Purchased the book for my 10 month old grandson. Expected he would hear the animals' sounds, but there is no audio in this book. You have to be the one to make the sounds. As I'm far away, that I can't do. Very disappointed.

Brainetics - Breakthrough Math and Memory System - Complete Set

Brainetics - Breakthrough Math and Memory System - Complete Set - Five exciting DVDs guide students through interesting and motivational lessons. Every DVD showcase the teachings and techniques of Math Genius and Master Teacher Mike Byster. The DVDs teach the student how to follow directions, concentrate, and detect patterns in numbers. They help students overcome math anxiety and use tricks and games to make math fun. By introducing math shortcuts they enable kids to do complex math in their head. This innovative technique develops mental multi-tasking that students use to solve any math problem. Finally, the DVDs apply Brainetic's techniques to mental organization and memory-building.

This review is from : Brainetics - Breakthrough Math and Memory System - Complete Set
Helps an "already good" math student to do "great" things . I'm writing this review to help other people make a purchase decision. if you have a question about the program or my review, please leave a comment below. I will be emailed by Amazon and I will update the review or answer your question.

If you have spent any time checking out this product, you will notice that there isn't a matrix to help you to know if this is appropriate for your child.

Here is what I would recommend:
Buy this product if:
1) Your child has mastered addition and subtraction, and at the very least has a VERY GOOD working knowledge of multiplication tables. Memorization of multiplication tables would be better (this is per the parents manual, I am not making this up).
2) Your child shows a preference for doing math already (in my opinion).
3) You want your kid to be able to do a lot of math-based parlor tricks.

Do not buy this product if:
1) Your child needs remedial math help. If your child struggles with basic math I recommend Hooked on Math (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division).
2) Your child needs an introduction to multiplication. All the lessons teach formulas. For example, to learn the "parlor trick" of being able to tell anyone what day of the week they were born on, the first half of the formula is to multiply by 5 and divide by 4. There is no explanation at all of what multiplication is or what division is. This is for kids who are already VERY aware of those basics (that trick is on DVD 1 by the way).
3) Your child is not going to continue practicing math to keep the lessons fresh in their mind.

If your child is brilliant but doesn't like math, and you want this program to "turn them around", then this program might work. They work hard to show you some math tricks and make math seem more enjoyable. A big emphasis is made on impressing others (although we all know that in "real life" you have to play to your audience).

By the numbers:
The DVDs have 15 hours of instruction.
The exterior box and flash cards say ages 9 to 99. Actually, these items aren't age-sensitive, they are ABILITY based. If you are already decent at multiplication and you are 7, then, you should buy this. If you are 11 and the problem "whats 9x7?" scares you then this is probably not a good product for you.

That concludes my basic review. For a more detailed review, read on.

To start off with, I have uploaded a picture showing exactly what you get out of the box. 2 books, a parents manual, 5 DVDs (in 2 boxes), and 2 decks of cards. The 5 DVDs include about 15 hours of instructional time. That boils down to $10 per hour for instruction, which is a "fair" price in todays world considering you can watch them, resell the kit, etc.

The Parents Manual.
The first 5 pages of the Parents Manual is a bit of fluff, congratulating you on your purchase and giving you some explanations why you should believe Mike Byster's program is "da bomb". The remaining 7 pages guide you in knowing what to ask your kids after they watch each part of each DVD. Certainly, followup is very important.

It says right in the Parents Manual (page 7) that this program is for children who have a "comfortable understanding" of their multiplication tables. Kids who KNOW them. This is NOT for remedial students who need help over a hurdle. The parent's manual is quick to point out that DVDs 1 and 2 can be enjoyed by anyone, but DVDs 3-5 will be difficult for children who have poor multiplication skills. I don't agree, multiplication is in the second trick on DVD 1. If you dont' know multiplication then there is a good chance your train will be derailed right there. I wish that this information was better represented on the Amazon product page and the Brainetics website.

THE DVDs.
The basic format is that 4 teams of kids are competing, with Mike Byster as a sort of coach/referee/teacher. Your child watches the other children learn the strategies. I have uploaded a picture of this. Ocasionally, there is a sidebar where Mike Byster addresses the viewer directly. There are also little "commercial breaks" which have jib-jab style animation. These commercial breaks tend to have trivial information that is vaguely related to the topic, but serve to stave off monotony. To me the commercials were very ADD, which means, most kids would like them. I guess. Your child will use a workbook along with the DVD.

DVD 1 talks about magic squares and moves on to a calendar trick where you can figure out the day of the week from any date in the last 100 years. This is a "parlor trick" which you may use for a practical purpose once a year as an adult, if you don't just check the calendar on your cell phone. But it relies on a FORMULA, and your child must MEMORIZE the formula or they are just "watching a math movie". (By the end of the program your child has to memorize dozens of tricks or formulas. Otherwise, its just expensive infotainment.)

By the second DVD your child is learning about Fibonacci numbers, adding doubled numbers, square roots, and 5th root tricks. These aren't the sort of things your child really NEEDS to know, its more like geeky math fun. And fun it can be. Does DVD #2 really "help students overcome math anxiety"? I think "mileage may vary" on that one...

The other three DVDs get into some serious math tricks, how to square numbers easily, how to divide large numbers easily. Its all legitimate. Actually, I'm getting something out of it myself. But some of these things would not be used by a child until they were much older. Other of these tricks fall into the category of "knowledge for knowledge's sake" which can easily be re-labelled "trivia". I could memorize the trick/formula for squaring a number between 100 and 125. But since my occupation doesn't require that I don't think I would bother to learn it. I just used pi-r-squared yesterday as part of my job but knowing "many tricks" for squaring "many numbers" is not very practical for me.

I don't think that Mike Byster gives us anything NEW or AMAZING here. What he DOES do - and this is important - is to repackage the facts up in a way that modern kids like to see it. You should not underestimate the importance of this.

So did it help the kids? Well, the one who was the oldest knew his multiplication tables, and he's learned a few of these tricks. But, he will forget some of them if he doesn't practice them, just as if I taught him French for a month and then ignored it for 2 years. Thats sad, but its true.

In the end, I think Brainetics provides exactly what it promises. It provides a launch pad for your child to learn a lot of math tricks that can make it possible for them to do "amazing" math facts. If your child stays with the program they will feel "good" about math. They may feel like they have "insider information". It may make them feel math is "easy" and propel them toward a math-related career (which is a good thing). BUT its just as likely that your kid will go through this program and have a vague recollection of it in 15 years.

I think the price is "fair" because of the 15 hours of DVD instruction and the way its presented.

Should you buy it? Maybe not. Its not for everyone. Its really more of a "bonus-round-extra-credit-math-whiz" program. You should hold off until your kid is pretty math-savvy to begin with.

I'm a geek. I would like my kids to be math whizzes. So I gave it a try. And right now I'm not so sure its worth the $150. You can do a lot of educational things with $150, and I'm just not sure this should be in the top 5.
Brainetics - Breakthrough Math and Memory System - Complete Set Reviews
It's Quickhand math aka Science math - been around for ages. . Back in the 1960s, homeroom elementary teachers taught longhand math (what is taught in schools today) and science teachers would teach quickhand math (aka shortcut/science math). Saw Brainetics tv ad this morning - me and spouse both said 'first time I've seen it in years'. We immediately recognized good ol' quickhand math, or science math. Remember Dad scribbling tax calc's and mom scribbling grocery and fabric yardage in the newspaper margins using quickmath? Same thing. In fact googlebooks has plenty of 1600's-1900's public domain science-history-math text books of elementary school instruction that include quickmath/science math (Full View too). Not a scam, not over-rated, not 'new' math, not cheater's math. The shock/scam online reviews of Brainetics appear groundless. They speculate, are ranting, frantic, suspicious, self-proclaimed non-user nay-sayers. Quickmath is old as dirt itself. An outcry over Brainetics' (one) BBB F-no reply rate is also humorous. The much-hyped issue is a nonreply, since BBB narrow codes don't have a N/A choice. BBB's edu industry/product no-review policy is clearly stated (on Brainetics' and all other BBB page).

Anyway, anyone who knows math or uses it in their career would recognize Brainetics as good old fashioned scientific-math, just relabeled. But parents who prefer dumping a hundred dollars in the newest, most up-to-date, moderne, nouveau methods may not know better than to download a vintage googlebooks math text, or spend 5 to 10 bucks for a vintage school math book on amazon, ebay, or abebooks that'd teach the same thing. I personally miss the fun days of addiators, addometers, sliderules. It'd be terrific if schools would reintroduce science math. In other countries, both are taught. It is very fun to know both ways - and nice getting math done in one-third the time.
Brainetics - Breakthrough Math and Memory System - Complete Set Opinions
I shudder to think of schools adopting this... . I shudder to think of schools adopting this as a method of teaching math. It's simply learning shorthand math tricks that, while useful, don't contribute to a foundational knowledge in even the most trivial of mathematic concepts.

Just buy "Secrets of Mental Math" by Benjamin and Shermer for $10 and work through it with your kid. You'll both learn all the same tricks, you'll save $140, and at least they'll be reading a book instead of staring at a TV.
Please don't waste money on this. There are better ways to learn! . I am a mechanical engineer. I was excited when I saw the infomercial and thought this would really help me get the answer quickly with some short-cuts. This would really help me with my productivity. After going through the 7 DVDs (yes, 7) of the 2011 deluxe set, I was really disappointed! This set only show 5, but I got the deluxe that had 7. Truth be told, there are no short-cuts in life and don't expect to gain it from these DVDs. Sure, these DVDs offer some fun things that are brain-teaser (such as solving magic square, a few numbers you can square or divide, a few things you can add, that's about it); you will never use them in a math class that can help you solve your textbook problems. If you want to learn math, do it right, do it the long way and practice, practice, practice and your practicing will be the short-cut. Don't get scam into putting out more than $100 on this thing. However, I do so I have to comment that there some positive things you will get out of these videos. You will learn a few things about numbers. If you have children, they will learn some neat things that would be cool at first but useless in the end. They won't learn anything that will boost their text book skill, but they will feel that they can do some math. We live in a digital age, if you want to see/try the videos, Google it and you will find it online for free. Try 4shared dot com. Good thing I didn't shell out a hundred buck on this thing. Don't be fool by the promo video that shows you he can divide by 91 or 143 and get the number to the 7th decimal place in his head. How many times in life are you going to need to divide numbers by 91 (not any number, only between 1 and 90)? He will also show you how to calculate the day of the week that you are born on too, but unless you memorize an entire numbers sequence for the months and day of the weeks and you have a calculator handy, it is useless! He will show you how you can square two or three numbers, again, with limited range that you will never use. Heck, I don't even remember needing to square that high of value for any test I need at school.
Fabulous Learning Tool . We purchased this program to assist my teenage son in his recovery from a traumatic brain injury. He's on disc 4, and we've seen a marked improvement in his reading comprehension, mathematics skills, and short-term memory. While he cannot yet do all of the Brainetics concepts his head, he is making huge progress. This has boosted his self-esteem and has given him the confidence he needs to continue pushing forward toward recovery.
Brainetics Was phenomenal . my kids loved this and so did i. it was a lot of fun. it is a great brain stretcher. nice work Mike Byster. you did great stuff.
brainetics is a piece of crap . DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. THIS WILL SHOW YOU FEW TRICKS TO MULTIPLY OR DO MATH FOR CERTAIN NUMBER ONLY. NOT A METHOD FOR LEARNING MATH.
IF YOU WANT TO LEARN SOME TRICK TO IMPRESS YOUR FRIENDS FOR $100 THEN GO AHEAD, OTHERWISE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.
Brainetics breackthrough math and memory system . I bought this DVD system for my daughter who is in 6th grade. It was VERY confusing for her but I gave her 2 months to try and learn it. She struggled to grasp the concepts. I called to return it to the company and they said No refunds after 30 days. I think that is POOR customer service. My child couldn't grasp it in 30 day let alone the 60 days she tried. I guess the own the company doesn't stand behind their product.
Braietics . The product came in a timely manner, and it was in great shape. I have some problems with the 3rd disc, it seems to stick!

Cons Review
Math CD . For an effecteive review, this was a Math CD for my grand dghter, product was great and should have been on the market sooner.

Thanx

Helpful practice for my 10-year-old daughter . We bought this book at the recommendation of my daughter's 5th grade teacher, as her math fact skills were not quite up to expectations. Having this book in her room near her bed is a perfect reminder for us to practice a few drills each night before bed, and the corresponding improvement in her skills has been notable.

More impressive than I thought it would be! Five stars! . I hesitantly bought this toy for my son for Xmas, trying to find something for him to learn math with. He is a bright 3.5 year old. I figured I would be working with him using these wooden rulers, which are of a much higher quality than I was expecting. So on Xmas he opens the toy, and plays with them himself, measuring daddy's foot, his own foot, etc. I show him the included book about how the rulers represent numbers, and how these numbers can be added together... just a cursory review. Well, about an hour later I was in the kitchen, and he comes running in and says, "Mommy! Guess what? Eight plus four is twelve!". Needless to say, I was pretty amazed... so I would have to say this is a pretty amazing toy --- you WILL have to work with the child, its not necessarily something that will fascinate them for long hours of play like legos or something... but it sure does hit the nail on the head when it comes to learning math. And its fun, too. I can't tell you how impressed I am. Plus, these rulers are build to last... so long as you don't throw them in the bath or something. I highly recommend this set.
Fat Brain Toys Inchimals Reviews
Well worth the 20 something dollars! . I found this toy described in a home schooling magazine and sought out a more reasonable price here at Amazon. (Which I found when I purchased the Inchimals last week... $22).

My almost 5 year old LOVES this product. We have been extremely casual about pre-school this year, and he begs to "do school" with the Inchimals. He has been measuring toys and household items. He has also been learning to recognize the numbers he hadn't mastered yet.

They are great in that they are specific lengths and can be laid out (or stood up like stairs) to show the relationship in size. He can see that 7 is bigger than 6. He can count the marked out inches along the side or dots on the end. As we have only had this product a few days now, I can see how in the future we can use them as a tool for learning addition and subtraction. This is the best math manipulative!
fun educational and gorgeous . Nearly 5-yo son thoroughly enjoys this, and I'm very impressed with it. Lots of creative and structured uses.
Fat Brain Toys Inchimals Opinions
so much to learn with these . My boys really like these...they love to line them up, stack them, see which is the biggest or smallest, and they love to write in the book that goes with it too. They are very appealing and pretty durable. The paint did chip a little on some of them but still look pretty good. Its a toy good for so many ages
Learning math without knowing it! . We use this for my 4 year old daughter, and she's learning math without knowing it. we're not really following the instructions in the book, as she's slightly too young for doing the real math. She actually kept begging to go through the additions/subtractions in the book but we told her she would have to wait. Note: My daughter isn't usually the self-motivated type when it comes to learning academic stuff...so it's amazing that this game fascinated her so much! We made up games...puppet play, measuring how tall each animal is, stacking them up and trying to make the other animals match the height...etc. She has fun with it!
The paint on the blocks do come off rather easily. So beware if you have young children around. We only play with this toy when my baby is sleeping.
Fabulous! . My husband rolled his eyes when he saw me wrapping these to give our 3- and 6- year-olds for Christmas. I knew what he was thinking. ("Great. An 'educational gift.'") Don't get me wrong. He went to college, but I think he's of the philosophy that Christmas magic requires fun for fun's sake. Once you start trying to give gifts that edify your kids, your motives become unpure.
Whatever! My kids both love this set! Adding animal faces to mathematical units makes them way more appealing than I expected. The kids love saying things like "mouse plus penguin equals bear," while understanding that, in the game's terms, this translates into 3 + 5 = 8. The wooden units come with a book and dry erase marker; the problems in the book become progressively more challenging. I got these for $25 and they were well worth it.
My only gripe: the glossy paint on these blocks is chipping too fast for my liking.
Great educationally but not so happy with the durability . I got these for my 3 year old son. He is not at all interested in the measuring or the numbers but he wanted to bang them together (my six year old loved doing the math problems though). Unfortunately the paint chips easily and the edges of the sticks dent significantly when hit together. I still love the idea behind the toy but not for my 3 year old who would rather bang them around a bit.
Great toy! . Great product, teaches you child really well. I like using this method too and it is a lot of fun - so to your stubborn toddler it will not feel like he is actually learning something (my child does not do well when he feel like you t=are trying to get him to study) : -)
So Much Fun! . I bought this toy for my 3 year old daughter and she loves it. The concept of addition is all we have covered with these so far and I must say the visual is SO clear! My daughter understood how to find the answers pretty quickly after I demonstrated it a few times. She loves the colors and the animals. My 2 year old son likes to sit and play with the blocks she isn't using and it helps keep him entertained, which can be challenging when I do learning activities with her since a lot of the time he doesn't find what we are doing interesting. My only complaint is that the paint scratches off very easily. Not really a big deal when you are using them gently, but I had let the kids play with them as blocks when we first got them and they toppled the towers they built a bunch of times. When I saw all the scratches that one rough play session caused I regretted letting them play with them that way and now only allow them to be used gently for their intended purpose.
Inchimals . We got this for our number crazy 4 year old grandson. He immediately put the pieces in order from smallest to largest, then stood them up to form steps from largest to smallest followed by quite a long time measuring things in the house with different pieces. We haven't done any formal "book" work yet but I see that coming as he has already compared 2 pieces to one equivalent piece, etc. He also measured each piece with an adult tape measure for accuracy to make sure each piece is what it is labeled to be...they are all accurate. The pieces do not show any paint chipping as a few reviews commented on...we just love the quality and the educational value of this toy.

Learning Resources Ler2980 Elapsed Time Line Opinions

Price : $14.99

Learning Resources Ler2980 Elapsed Time Line Opinions - Help students visualize, calculate and understand elapsed time with this linear color-coded ruler. To determine elapsed time, students place a sliding marker at both start and end times, then count the time in between the markers. Features red AM hours, green PM hours and blue minute increments. Markings offer flexibility of 5- to 60-minute intervals. Plastic ruler measures 24"L x 2 1/2" W and folds in half for convenient storage. Activity Guide included.\n

This review is from : Learning Resources Ler2980 Elapsed Time Line
Time for Time . At the learning center I've worked with students from five to sixty, and with students of any age one sometimes encounters stumbling blocks, obstacles that arrest or slow progress. These boulders in the road might be the times tables, use of apostrophes in possessives, sight word mastery, long division, potato agronomy, sequencing of events in a passage, word problems, counting money, or telling time. A common difficulty youngsters encounter when studying time is calculating elapsed time. For these students the difficulty is compounded when the event begins before noon and ends in the afternoon.

I like using manipulatives to teach an abstract concept like elapsed time. For the one to one lessons I've sometimes used real clocks, but mostly use a model clock designed for young learners. Students physically turn the hands of the clock and count the revolutions to determine elapsed time. Some require more practice than others despite extensive use of the visuals and manipulatives. Even a snack of cookies fortified with thyme doesn't always help. Recently we acquired a new tool for those having difficulty mastering elapsed time. It's a product called Elapsed Time Line from Learning Resources.

Elapsed Time Line

Learning Resources? calls their product a linear, color-coded ruler, and it does indeed look like a bright yellow ruler. In fact it looks like two bright yellow rulers joined in the middle with a plastic hinge. When unfolded the elapsed time line device measures 24" by 2.5 inches. Amazingly the height is a constant 2.5" whether or not the elapsed time line is folded or unfolded!

The ruler on the left is the AM side. The numbered hours are inside red circles; the lines between the circles are in increments of five minutes with the numbers 15, 30, and 45 shown as numerals. On the PM side the hours are inside green circles.

On the top of the time line is a blue starting time marker that slides inside a channel. On the bottom of the time line is a red indicator also sliding inside a channel. A clever child or a potato head can figure out how to remove the markers making the time line almost useless.

The included activity guide is of marginal usefulness. It's a small tri-folded sheet of paper that mostly describes the time line. Two example problems are illustrated on the back of the activity guide. The user is cautioned not to force the time line to close because it could cause it to break. Perhaps one should ask it nicely to close instead of using force.

Random Thoughts and Opinions

The elementary grade teachers with whom I shared the Elapsed Time Line weren't familiar with it and questioned its usefulness and longevity. A kindergarten teacher said many of her students would break the thing in less than five minutes or discover how to remove the sliding arrows. She said that the time line might be useful for one to one instruction, but she wouldn't want to distribute these to a class.

One teacher questioned the difficulty of transition from the linear time line to a real clock. I don't thing that transitioning will be a problem.

The unit looks like a ruler, generic and utilitarian. I'd like to see bigger numbers, more colors, and even some illustrations to give this time tool some pizzazz. The back of the Elapsed Time Line is totally blank, a vacuum begging to be filled.

The sliding arrows don't slide easily making it difficult for youngsters to place the markers precisely. Even this Spudman had some difficulty placing the arrows on target.

The students with whom I shared the Elapsed Time Line were somewhat underwhelmed though they welcomed this new approach to an old topic. Most found it easier to determine elapsed time using the "time line" than using fingers, pencil and paper, or a model clock with moving hands. After ten minutes or so with the Elapsed Time Line students and teacher were ready to move on to something else.

I found prices online for this tool ranging from 15 to thirty dollars. Don't pay more than fifteen dollars for it. For years I've presented the same concept of linear time by using an actual ruler or simply writing out the hours on a sheet of paper with time increments marked between the hours. The cost for my homemade paper and pencil timeline? Nothing but a little time.

Rawr! . My preschooler, kindergartner, and grade school-er all love when I bring these down. They play naturally (sans coaching or prompting) with them at each of their own development levels: Colors, type sorting, counting, adding and subtracting, and grouping/ dividing them between each other. Play with these lasts them at least 30 minutes and they pick up nicely back into the tub. I expect these will last us many years and pass on to share with nieces and nephews too.

Teach Your Child to Count to 20 - Math & Logic #2

ChildUp Early Learning Game Cards & Method

Teach Your Child to Count to 20 is the 2nd pack (the complement of the 1st pack, Teach Your Child to Count to 10) of the ChildUp Early Learning Game Cards, a series of educational tools for parents and early childhood educators who intend to develop, by playing in an interactive way, the learning and intellectual skills of their children - boys and girls from 1 to 5 years old - and to best prepare them for school and future academic excellence.

The Teach Your Child to Count to 20 pack includes 16 Parent's Cards and 48 Child's Cards in full color.

The Parent's Cards describe the 2nd part of the ChildUp Early Learning Method, providing practical early teaching and parenting advice, based on years of research and experience.

By using the Child's Cards with an adult, any child will learn to count from 10 to 20 (one fundamental step in arithmetic), numbers as quantities and symbols, even and odd numbers, and to do basic additions and subtractions. All that while discovering 4 new series of 10 animals, 40 nice topics for many interesting discussions and vocabulary development.

The frequent use of Teach Your Child to Count to 20 is probably one of the most motivating and efficient ways to develop several of your child's most important abilities: math and logic skills, learning and cognitive skills, listening and memory skills, attention and concentration skills, language and social skills.

This review is from : Teach Your Child to Count to 20, Math & Logic #2, First Additions & Subtractions
A Great Educational Learning Tool . These cards are amazing! When I received these I was very amazed to find that they were filled with so many learning ideas. Not only are these cards set up to help you learn your numbers, but as a parent you also have the opportunity to use them in so many different ways. We used both of these sets with my youngest daughter who is 3.5. We started with the first set and once she started better recognizing the numbers from 1-10, we moved on to try the 11-20 cards as well. She is still struggling with these but she is catching on. What she loves is the fact that the cards themselves are made for kids her age. With vibrant colors and fun animals, she can relate and she enjoys counting the animals that were on each of the cards.I started being the one who would pick each set of cards within the pack, but I quickly found that she was saying that she wanted to do Math at night like her big sister and that she wanted to be the one to choose what cards we were using as well.I have seen a marked improvement in both number recognition as well as comprehension through using these cards and I have to say that anyone that is looking for a set of cards that will assist with their own child's math skills, you should look no further than these cards.
Teach Your Child to Count to 20, Math & Logic #2, First Additions & Subtractions Reviews
Flashcards are the single most cost-effective tool in learning . Math & Logic #2 not only teaches your children math, but because the cards have pictures of animals on them, you can teach your child categorizing, sorting, and comparing. We found the cards to be both colorful and engaging. The pictures keep your child interested and at the same time teach them how to count, addition and subtraction. You won't find other flashcards that are as diverse as these. The discussions you have with your child while playing with the cards about numbers and animals will further help develop your child's vocabulary and language skills. They are also the perfect size to take to preschool, trips to daycare, the babysitters and grandma's house.
Teach Your Child to Count to 20, Math & Logic #2, First Additions & Subtractions Opinions
Great for developing little brains . We received the Teach Your Child to Count to 10 and Teach Your Child to Count to 20 sets (for a blog review). There are a total of 80 animals on these card sets and those really had my toddler excited. This second set has her thinking beyond the 1 to 10, while for a three year old those numbers are a little hard to grasp - it really helps her to have a visual (without me scrambling to draw a visual myself). She likes playing with them on her own as well as locating all the animals on the card that shows each group. I highly recommend it, just keep away from small babies that like to chew on things! ;)
Great resource for learning! . I received a set of these for blog review. I have to say this is an easy to use system that really lets you teach your child his/her numbers. I love the added bonus of the animals too. It is not a rigid flash card system which is a plus. I think you'll be pleased with your purchase as I am pleased with this product.
Teach your child to count to 20 . I have been looking for educational games for my four year old son, Tate, and was happy to discover the Child Up Early Learning Game Cards. Its hard to keep my active four year old sitting long enough to do any sort of formal educational. I need to make sure that every learning experience is fun and engaging for him. If he thinks he is playing a game with me, I have a better chance of him sitting down and focusing on what we are working on. I have tried educational books and videos but he seems to do better with cards and games. The Child Up Early Learning Game Cards are excellent early learning tools for toddlers. The two packs of cards that I was sent for review are the "Teach Your Child to Count to 10' and "Teach your Child to Count to 20'. These cards were designed for both boys and girls, ages 1 to 5. The "Teach Your Child to Count to 10' pack includes 64 cards; 16 parent cards and 48 child's cards. The 16 parent cards include information on the learning game cards as well as topics such as "Both parents as role models", "Parents are First Teachers" and "Learning as a Routine". This first set of cards is designed to teach numbers 0 to 10, numbers as quantities and symbols and the first steps with addition. The "Teach your Child to Count to 10' cards help develop your child's math, logic, listening, memory, attention, concentration, language and social skills while having fun! The "Teach Your Child to Count to 20' cards also include the 48 child's cards as well as the 16 parent cards. The parents cards cover different topics than the previous pack, including ""Memory and Concentration Development", "Building Vocabulary and Words" and "Listening to Your Children". This second set of cards is designed to teach numbers 10 to 20, odd and even numbers, first additions and subtractions as well as categorizing, sorting and comparing. The "Teach Your Child to Count to 20' cards continue to emphasize and improve skills such as math, logic, listening and concentration. The best thing about these educational card games from Child Up is that they are fun! The cards are colorful and also picture different popular animals to help with counting! The numbers are large and clear on the cards so that they are easy to read. There are also the same number of animals on the card coordinating with the number so my son can work on his counting, as well as number recognition. My four year old son, Tate, had so much fun putting all the cards in order by counting the animals on the cards. He is also every interested in science so he enjoyed listening to descriptions of the animals on the back of the cards! The Child Up Early Learning Card Game is a fun and educational way to teach kids about numbers!Child Up was developed in 2005 to provide tools and education to parents to help raise successful, balanced children. Child Up offers solutions and tools for parenting, early childhood development and early learning. Their early educational tools include Teach Your Child to Count to 10, Teach Your Child to Count to 20, Foundations of Math and Logic, Interactive Reading and Multilingual Development. They also offer online tutorials regarding child behavior management. Follow them on Facebook for more informative educational articles!
Terrific learning aid -- esp. for kids who love animals! . By using these flash cards sequentially, with an adult, ChildUp says that any child will, in a matter of a few months, be able to learn to count up to 20, differentiate between odd and even numbers, and do basic subtraction and addition.A bonus is that animals are pictured on each card which will also, in turn, foster vocabulary and language skills.Fun learning at its best!
Fantastic Educational Learning Tool . I have both the count to 10 and these count to 10 set of cards and they are so much fun to play with. My little one loves them and I like that they also allow me to teach him about addition and subtractions in a fun way.A must have if you are looking for an educational tool that is inexpensive and fun and that will keep your little one occupied.
