T&K Chem series is cumulative . I am going to buy some of these kits, but the Amazon site does not explain the sequencing. At the Thames and Kosmos site, they explain that Chem 2000 contains all of the experiments of Chem 1000 and then some. Likewise, Chem 3000 contains all of the experiments of Chem 1000 and 2000 and then some. I figured there might be other parents out there who wanted this piece of information.
CHEM C2000 Intermediate Chemistry Kit Reviews
Chem C 2000 good value . It must be good, I bought this kit to get my sons home school labs done for chemistry. The deal was he (had) to do one a week. The kit arrived yesterday and he has completed 1-12 in two days. I will tell you seltzer water is in the first part of the book so buy some before the kit arrives.
Other than that peroxide, alcohol, water, and vinegar were needed. Seltzer was not something I keep on hand but the other things were here. The only thing it lacks is a full list of other things you need so you can be prepared when the kit arrives. The price went down $2 after I purchased it. Which is good for you I guess. I can't complain I was pricing kits for over a month and this was by far the most complete with the best price. It is a good value. Books A million had it for $105 but when I went to buy it the price jumped to $150. I thought I had dyslexia but I had printed the page out 2 weeks prior and it said 105 on the printed page. To sum it up I we are vary happy with the kit.
CHEM C2000 Intermediate Chemistry Kit Opinions
Tons of Fun! . This is an excellent chemistry kit. I love the fact that manual is not difficult to read and my son was able to work independently on some of the experiments. I would highly recommend.
Truly pathetic excuse for a chemistry set... no chemical formulas at all . Truly pathetic excuse for a chemistry set... no chemical formulas at all.

I am truly disappointed with this poor excuse for a chemistry set. It is all colors and flashy things, nothing really is explained. There are no chemical formulas (even though it is targeted to older children who could perfectly understand something in a much simpler way things as the decomposition of water 2 H2O -> 2H2 + O2 rather than the OVERLY LONG and TRULY BORING text that goes along with each experiment and really explains very little or nothing at all. Wow! I know this is no longer the 1970's or 1980's but I really miss my chemistry set from back then. This chemistry set is really worthless.

This is my second T&K set (the first one was a physics set). I am really dismayed how poor they are in terms of actual explanations of the science behind the kit. It is so DUMBED DOWN that is extremely boring since at the end of the experiments you really gain no knowledge of what happened since the text only describes what you see.

I will *never* buy any T&K kit again.
Good but difficult. Not for the faint of heart. . There are many, many great things to do with this set. It is difficult for my son to work his way through, and is much better if I read the experiment first, then explain it to him as to what the goal is, and all the steps and ingredients. It's more like a teacher's manual. That said, I believe we will learn a LOT about chemistry!
Pleased but somewhat disappointed. . I purchased the CHEM C2000 for my son, so that we could do the experiments together, it was fun, I enjoyed it, however I was disappointed that it required external ingredients for some of the experiments. However, I fully recommend it.
Not a toy chem set . I got this set for our 9 year old who out grew his first chemistry kit. This one is "for real". In order to do the experiments you have to start at lesson 1 and work through the chapters. It feels like homeschool material, which is great, eventhough we don't homeschool. I will set aside time to work on it with my son, he can't do the work without parental help. I recomend it for those who really want to learn real chemistry.
Great Gift for a Budding Chemist . This chemistry kit has it all! Chemicals, an alcohol burner, and test tubes. It requires parent supervision, but is fantastic for those with an interest in chemistry. I got this for my son's birthday, and it has provided hours of fun! No accidents yet, but we are careful around here, and as a former science teacher, I supervise well. Super cool!

Cons Review
Only as good as the manual which is weak . Overall, this is a nice set. However, the manual could have (and should have) been written much better. On several experiments, it has induced frustration in my son and unfortunately, dampened his interest in chemistry instead of fostering it. A great example of this is the invisible ink experiment. You are over half way into the experiment before you are told to pull out a feather/ink quill or fine point paint brush (neither of which come with the set.) Next surprise, you are told that slightly yellow paper works best (hmmm, let me see, where is that stock of slightly yellow paper I keep around the house - Ah yes, next to my ink quill.) Finally, you are told that you need to mix up two addition solutions not initially mentioned.

Come on, folks. How hard is it to provide a simple "You will need these items for this experiment list" at the top of each experiment?

Additionally, I think the experiments would be a little more exciting if some more fun was introduced into the manual. Again, referring to the invisible ink experiment, some text about secret agents or on passing secret messages between friends might make it a little more exciting for kids.

The set is nice made and compiled so it certainly is worthy from that standpoint. It is also well packaged.

Best Elenco OWI ATR - All Terrain Robot

Price : $44.99
BUY NOW
Elenco OWI ATR - All Terrain Robot - The 3-in-1 All Terrain Robot is a multi-function tracked mobile robotic kit. Utilize different track modules and make your robot transform into 3 amazing variations: the forklift, rover, and gripper. Using the wired controller, command the robot to move forward, backward, turn, grip and lift. In forklift mode, the ATR is like a mini industrial fork lift, with the ability to lift up to 100 g in weight. In rover mode, the ATR's tank-like treads can traverse any type of surface. And in gripper mode, the ATR's strong arms grab and pull objects into its grasp, lifting anything up to 100g and moving it to your desired location. This kit allows students to create and recreate: Put it together, take it apart, make another module...It's all about flexibility, and intelligent thinking. But luckily, kids don't have to be robotics engineers to create and achieve. With the 3-in-1 All Terrain Robot, they learn as they play.

Feature Elenco OWI ATR - All Terrain Robot

  • No soldering required
  • Command the robot to move forward, backward, turn, grip and lift
  • Remote wired controller
  • Easy to understand kid friendly step-by-step instructions
  • Build an entertaining multi-function tracked mobile robot

This review is from : Elenco OWI ATR - All Terrain Robot
Robot Kit Fun . This robot is fun to build and goes together easily. It brought back the pleasure of assembling kits and the kit is well thought out and designed. It also has the potential to be used for constructing other robots, but that is a hacker exercise; it should not be hard to make it into a rc controlled device rather than a wired controlled robot. It would make a good parent/child project. I haven't tested its playability with my grandchild yet, but I suspect it will hold her attention for a while. The main value would be as a good project to do with a child. It requires some patience and attention to detailed instructions. It would go to five stars if it had rc control; it was a close call. I gave it a three stars for durability but it could well be more durable than that; I just haven't given a child an opportunity to test its durability.
Elenco OWI ATR - All Terrain Robot Reviews
Good Intermediate Robot - Recommended . This Robot is well made. Good Quality. It took us 3 hrs to assemble everything (normal pace). My Son is 6 yrs old and its difficult for him to assemble. Especially the screws and stuff. This Toy states this is for 13 yrs.
Be Careful while attaching Chains on the wheels. They are tricky and has potential to break if not careful enough.Pros:
Good Quality Parts (Be careful when attaching the chains though)
Teaches how to assemble a Gear box with single and double motors
Teaches how to build a Remote Controller remote
Gives ideas to kids on the internals
Good InstructionsCons:
Slow movement. I wish the motors could have been a little faster
No Lights. Its a 3-in-1 Robot, one or two red or green lights would have been cool
Some kind of sensors would have been good
Less expansion capability out of the box
No place to stick the battery for Gearbox or Arduino Nano etc (for Normal applications this might be OK)I am giving this review 5 Stars as its me who wants to modify this to work with Arduino but, others will just use it as a Toy only without any expansion capabilities. For what it offers its a great robot educational toy for the Price and I highly recommend it.
Elenco OWI ATR - All Terrain Robot Opinions
Wrong Battery Pack . Ordered this for a class project and started to assemble only to discover that the wrong battery pack was provided. The 'bot calls for a 3-wire battery pack and the one supplied only has 2 wires and a completely different connector. Hopefully the company will resolve the issue promptly, but at this point it is useless...EDIT: I faxed the missing parts request form to OWI and they had the correct battery pack out to me very quickly. Apparently there is an entire lot of these that shipped with the wrong battery pack (including the 2nd one I purchased...).Very fun to use and fairly easy to reconfigure to the other bots. Upgrade from 3 to 4 stars.
Great Project with my Son . Bought this for a project with my 10 year old. His second electronic/robot project...first was robotic arm. He was able to put most of it together himself. Like all of these kits, the instructions can be a bit challeging sometimes...mainly because tiny nuances of parts positions are shown in a picture, but not emphasized...so sometimes you end up wit the flange or screw hole facing the wrong way. If fixing a doorknob is beyond your capabilities...this kit isn't for you. If you are reasonably mechanically inclined, you'll figure it out fine. Best part was when I noticed a few days later that my son had converted robot into to a different vehicle all by himself. Summary: A few hours of time well spent with your kid results in a robotic toy that teaches them real world examples of engineering and mechanics. Yes..it will break eventually...thats what happens to things your kids play with... but they will remember you building it with them for their entire life.
dont buy . i was excited to get this and got half way thru building it and found out that it had a faulty board. tried to contact the mfg and got no answer from them. i will never buy their products again!
Looks more promising than it is.... . Less than exciting once assembled. The assembly was the most he's played with it...maybe he's too old now and it was my bad for buying it as a Christmas present. Oh well...live and learn.
Fun to put together but fun ends there . Took me about three hours to put together, you will need a size 1 Phillips screw driver for the kit. Not all screw drivers are the same size so make sure you have the right one or you will end up striping screws. It was very easy to put together, design is very simple. My thought on it was this was a Mechanical Engineer one upping an Electrical Engineer, there is no real "electronics" in the toy. Pretty much you push the remote stick forward and connect the power to the motor (ie motor goes forward) and you push the remote stick backward and the power is reversed to the motor (ie the motor goes backward). The jaws really cannot hold anything with much weight or they will break, so the box that comes with it is about it. I broke a piece connecting the treads changing between the models, the first time I was changing them. This was a gift from my wish list, but it felt like the person paid $35-50 for me to put together a $10 dollar store toy. My four year old niece plays with the finished toy for about 2 minutes before getting board. It is a wired remote with about 6 foot of cord between the model and the remote. Pros:
Easy to put together (with right sized tools)
Simple design
Great learning toy for simple remote controlled car type toy
Directions were easy to follow
Comes with cardboard box to lift and move
Creeps my cats outCons:
This is not a robot it is a fancy remote controlled car
Wired remote with about 6 foot of cord
No battery pack on the device all batteries are in the remote
No real "electronics" in the toy
After being build it is a "cheap" toy that cannot handle much more weight then a very small cardbord box (it comes with)
Easy to break tread attachments
There are some small parts are a pain to detach and clean.Overall I enjoyed building the toy but now I do not know what to do with it.
The Elenco OWI ATR-All Terrain Robot . The Elenco OWI ATR-All Terrain Robot is awesome! That comes straight from my 13 year old son who received it for Christmas. He built it entirely by himself and this amazing remote controlled robot can be transformed into 3 different robot styles and can lift and move objects around! He was very proud of himself for accomplishing building this robot and it literally kept my son busy for the entire day besides playing with it often. Great product.
Excellent Product -- . This is an excellent product. My son put it together in about 8 hours. He did need help from me with some of the screws. If I had found the correct size screwdriver instead of just making do, he wouldn't have needed much help. I would probably still have had to help with the treads. Putting the connectors together on the treads was a little challenging. YMMV. I finally had the trick down after 6 of them, but it took a combination of dexterity, patience and experience to make it happen. Make sure you have the right size screwdriver. (I don't have access to the kit right now or a list of screwdrivers to tell you exactly which size is the right size).
Excellent Father and Son Project . My son is almost 8, and he did need a lot of help in understanding the directions. But with my help and verbal explanation, he was able to put the parts in the right place, put the circuits and screws and gear in the right place, and now has a very cool fork lift. It easily goes over carpet, and he has fun playing with it. Like Legos, it requires assembly for everything. Unlike legos, he still enjoyed playing with it once it is built. The part that I liked the most is that he saw a circuit board, wires, motors, and gears, and then transformed it into an operating machine. It really increased his confidence!I also bought the robot arm... very different experience. It is harder to build, and I had to send it back because the PC board was damaged.

This review is from : LADYBUG Robot Kit (requires soldering assembly) # 21-885
A great buy! . I ordered this and another Elenco Kit as part of a class I was teaching to eight to ten year old kids. The kids loved it. They especially loved being able to solder all the components on themselves. I did also order a practice soldering kit and that definitely helped with teaching them to solder before we started on the robot kits. The directions for the kit were fairly easy to follow though there are a couple parts that need to be placed in a specific direction and if you are not paying close attention, you may put them in backward and it won't work. I do have to warn you that it is very easy to make a mistake on a kit like this or even ruin the board when you are soldering (or desoldering, when mistakes are made). In my case, my kids did make mistakes (all part of the learning process) and were not able to get their robot fully functional. Regardless, I think this product is completely worth it and an excellent value.
LADYBUG Robot Kit (requires soldering assembly) # 21-885 Reviews
Not for beginners . I fully admit that I am a beginner at putting together electrical things from scratch. But the description of the product made it sound like it would be ok for people just learning. Unfortunately, my son and I still haven't figured out what we're doing wrong and why the ladybug won't start. We did everything like the instructions said but when we put the batteries in, they get so hot you can't touch them if you leave them in for more than a couple of minutes. I assume this means we have something backwards but we can't figure out what it is.

I loved taking the time to do this with my son and if you're more knowledgeable about electrical things, I think this would be a fun kit to use to teach your kids or someone else how to do it. But the instructions aren't exactly great for beginners.
LADYBUG Robot Kit (requires soldering assembly) # 21-885 Opinions
Wonderful robot . I was looking for a small robotics kit to get me started with the basics of robotics and this was definitely worth it. 100% glad that I bought this product!

8 yo daughter's Christmas gift. . My daughter is 8 and VERY curious about science. So, when she asked for a microscope I started my quest. I am a Registered Nurse who is tired of pointless, uneducational plastic toys that break. I wanted school quality & durability and I found it in this microscope! It is the real deal with the metal body, lights, and different magnifications. Not to mention my daughter is head over heals with it, so am I. You never know buying something online what you will get.
The only part I would change is making it a Bi instead of a monocular.

If you purchase this microscope, I hope you enjoy it.
C and A Scientific My First Lab Ultimate Microscope Reviews
Introduce your child to the wonders of the hidden world!! . Fantastic product. The microscope is very sturdy. The inclusion of the LED underlight is a big plus. Other models that use mirrors under the platform pale in comparison with the clarity of image provided by this feature.

My son got this for Christmas and spent the next couple days glued to it. The included slides are clean, clear and fascinating.

I wish the product had come with some blank slides for the junior scientist to create for themself, but there are kits available that you can buy separately.

C and A Scientific My First Lab Ultimate Microscope Opinions
Most durable purchase for the price! . I bought this for my 11 year old son and he has enjoyed it immensly! In fact, the whole family has enjoyed using this microscope. I was surprised at how durable and how sturdy the product was, I was expecting plastic, but this is the real thing. I can remember using one similar in high school biology. This product is perfect for the first time microscope user who wants more than a cheap plastic version from Wal-Mart. I really recommend for the curious science buff!
Not really a toy....which is a good thing. . This scope is like the ones used in high school. Very durable, and not a toy. My 11-year-old loves it. Get the package of example slide too, very cool.
Good . Works very well, only trouble= once you focus something, it drops out unless you hold it.
Nice starter microscope . This is a great microscope for a beginner. There isn't a fine focus adjustment, but it does have a 40X objective which makes many things visible. Highly recommended for the beginning microscopist.
NikkiM . This microscope was a little bit expensive for a young child, but it is excellent. It's real lab-quality and is very durable.
GREAT Educational Toy . This was a purchase for 2 Grand daughters age 9 & 11 They are curious about the world around them and I would rather have them research this discovery than set in front of the TV or video games
Kids used it on first day only . The kids were very excited to get this in the mail. They waited for it and asked every single day after school whether it had arrived. When it arrived, they were excited to experiment with it and view different items. But everything looks the same. All I could see was a black dot with respect to everything. Even the mold growing on leftovers did not show up. They put it away after the first day and now it's collecting dust. It looks educational on our shelf, though.
Bought 4 Christmas for Special Needs child it was broken :( . I purchase Christmas early, so I ordered this on Oct 7 for my Autistic grandchild. when it arrived, I just hid it in my closet until it was wrapped and put under the tree. We were VERY disappointed when my grandchild opened it with excitement on Christmas morning to find it in pieces! So of course, the time is up on getting a full refund or replacement. We shipped it back and are hoping for the best.

Dimensions: 140 x 150 x 100mm

Also known as Velleman KSR4

Requires (4) AA batteries (not included)

This review is from : Elenco Escape Robot Kit
Putting it together is 90% of the fun . From an assembly point of view, this toy offers a lot. In spite of the stated recommended age, we went ahead and purchased this for my 5-year-old, with the intent that he and I would work on it together.

Of course I had to do all of the soldering, and much of the stuff requiring fine motor skills, such as the gear assembly. But there's still lots he was able to help out with, since all the parts need to be sorted, electronic components need their leads formed, screws need to be tightened, etc.

And he and I had a LOT of fun working together to assemble the kit. The instructions are even surprisingly well-organized and presented, considering that they still were obviously written by someone not a native English speaker.

But, some caveats: this is by no means a durable toy. And even during the assembly, there are pitfalls to watch out for.

There are a lot of self-tapping screws going into soft plastic, which I am well aware need to be handled carefully, lest the threads in the plastic get stripped or components get deformed. But even with that knowledge and caution, it was FAR too easy to overtighten the screws holding the legs in place. I still managed to stress four of the six legs enough to whiten the grey plastic, and a fifth one actually broke (so far the Super Glue is holding fine though :) ).

The infrared LEDs are also a bit tricky. The kit includes LED mounting brackets, but these are not actually brackets in the traditional sense. They are just a spacer the LED goes into, allowing a gentle way to mount the LED at a right-angle to the PCB. Getting the LED soldered without too much play in the bracket between the LED and the PCB is nearly impossible. I wound up just gluing the brackets down and then soldering the LED in.

The other thing to be aware of is that the toy is much more interesting for the electronics aspect than for its movement. The latter being very unsophisticated, and not even very productive. The toy doesn't travel in a straight line by default as one might expect. Instead, it only runs the left side wheels/legs as its normal operation, putting it into a perpetual right turn.

When one of the three infrared sensors detects an obstacle, then one of three alternative motor operations are selected for a moment, depending on which sensor was triggered. Then it goes back to pushing itself in a circle.

At first I thought maybe we'd hooked something up wrong, or shorted a trace on the PCB or something like that. But nothing like that appears to be the case, and the right side motor does in fact operate during the turning logic. Just not during the default movement.

Even my five-year-old is visibly frustrated to a minor degree with the uninteresting movement; it seems likely to me that many children old enough to build this kit on their own would be completely bored after the assembly is done.

On the bright side, the assembly is fun to do, and the project offers lots of opportunities to discuss basic electronics. Of course there's an IC that handles the real logic, but there's still a good representation of regular discrete components (resistors, transistors, capacitors, LEDs and regular diodes, etc.) to talk about. So I wouldn't call this a complete waste of time. Just be aware of its limitations.
Elenco Escape Robot Kit Reviews
Great beginner robot! . I would highly recommend this beginner robot. My son found the directions easy to follow.
It did help that we also bought the beginner's soldering kit "Elenco AK-100 Learn to Solder Kit."

Great entry into robotics . I purchased this to get my 10 year old more interested in building kits and in robotics. We worked on it together and learned about gears, electronics and controls.
Initially we got one gear reversed on one side and it was binding. After some examination of the drawings we discovered the problem and fixed it. The electronics controlling the legs on one side are not working but I assume that we did something wrong in the electronics during the assembly. We will be looking into it more soon.

Even thouth the drawings are good there are almost no written directions. I would recommend this project at s joint venture between a child and an adult. Soldering is required and so it is not a true toy and should be only done by someone at least 15 years old or someone that is familiar with soldering.

The only disappointment that I have with this item is from an educational standpoint. It would be much better if written material was provided that explained control systems, electronics, and gearing. This might raise the low price of $21.00 but it would be worth it.

Otherwise great fun - would purchase again.
Very fun Get your money's worth . First off,

I have never done any sort of electronics before, although I have always wanted to. I recently struck an interest in robotics and figured I should start somewhere simple and inexpensive. The package contained everything, and looked in great condition and all that.. The instructions seem as if they might be translated from a language other than English, but still readable.
Fair warning : There are about 100 TINY parts (transistors, diodes, capacitors) and are very easy to lose if not careful.

After about 3-4 hours of soldering and mechanics, everything was complete, I put batteries in, But nothing happened. :( I was pretty sad, after all that work and no cool robot, but After a closer inspection found that the Microprocessor was put on backwards and pretty much stuck (like 20 pins soldered is a pain to unsolder).

So now I've ordered a second one to give it another shot, After I put that one together I'll update this review.
Not for a 12 year old... not really for a 37 year old either . I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend's young brother, the idea being we could build it together. Note this kit requires soldering, something I assumed it didn't if it was appropriate for 12 year olds. But we went out and got a small soldering iron. Solder has lead in it and the fumes can be toxic as well as the molten metal. There's considerable safety considerations for children because this stuff affects children even more than adults. Ok, all that said - I'm by no means an expert soldering things, but by profession I work with technology. It took me and the lad about 8 hours to put this thing together soldering all the tiny resistors and capacitors and integrated circuits on to the circuit board. And as it turns out? The thing doesn't work at all. I bet one of the components got fried when soldering it in. Point is, this wasn't a good experience for the person I bought it for. It wasn't safe for him to do alone, for sure. And as an adult with electronics experience, I couldn't make the darn thing work. The instructions are ok, better than the usual you might expect, but there's nothing about soldering safety, etc. I would not recommend this unless you have advanced electronics experience, are really good with a soldering iron, and can supervise the young ones very closely.
Loved it! . My 10 year old son enjoyed building this robot and was very proud of himself when he completed it. But he was even more excited when it worked the way it was supposed to! This is a great beginner's kit for children that want to learn how robots work. I highly recommend it.
Excellent learning and playing toy . I bought this as a learning and playing toy for my grade-school age daughter. She had a blast. I taught her how to solder, how to trip excess wires, how to tighten nuts and bolts, and how to a bunch of other things. She had fun not only while putting it together, but also playing with it.After putting the round wheels (not the rotating "legs"), she suggested that we could mix wheels and legs to get traction on carpet as well as hard wood. We just did that, and the bug now crawls and drives on any floor material.
Great starter kit . Did this with my kid (9 years old), and we had fun. My child did over 90% of the solders, I did the IC because it was a bit intimidating. The instructions were pretty clear, I never had a problem understanding what to do next. But the instructions where mostly a parts list with a few diagrams. For my kid, it was mostly a fun experience of working on a several day project, learning how to solder, and flicking the switch. I am not sure how much we would have liked it, if it did not work. There was no guide for amateurs that discussed trouble shooting. If it did not work, I would have checked the connections, but my lack of knowledge of all but the simplest electronic theory would have turned it into a static sculpture. Still I would recommend it to people who are interested as long as they know what to expect.
Educational . The robot was more than I expected. It was harder to assemble (approx. 150 soldering joints)and trouble shoot. After my son soldered all the joints, he was ready to see how it worked. One side was not working properly, but it was due to wire connections touching each other where they were not insulated. We were able to separate them with a little plastic. Overall, it was a success and very educational. My son enjoyed making the maze for the robot and seeing it work.
