This review is from : Smithsonian Smithsonian Micro Prehistoric Sea Monsters
Bought it for self interest . I used to enjoy these pets as a kid, and I found this for 12.99 at a local Micheal's shop. The instructions were simple. Simply wash the sand before putting it into the aquarium, then put distilled water (I put bottled spring water) and then toss in half of the eggs. I waited less than 24 hours there they were! This is the most exciting pet to enjoy.Ignore the 1 star review, it has zero logic. It's true that family of triops do come from sea water.Sit down and enjoy your new pet! You won't regret it!The package comes with limited supply of food; however if you want to continue providing them with food supply; go to your nearest local pet shop. Sinking pellets (smallest ones you can get) are the best way to go.Have fun!
sea monsters . I LOVE THESE THINGS! They are so much fun and my children loved them. perfect first pet for little ones
Smithsonian Smithsonian Micro Prehistoric Sea Monsters Reviews
Triops are not "Sea" Monsters . Though it is marketed as such, this product cannot be educational- Triops are not "Sea" monsters. They live in fresh water, in ephemeral habitats, and they are crustaceans.

Buy them somewhere else, this packet is misleading.

This review is from : Smithsonian Smithsonian Micro Volcano
very fun poor implementation of the design . What's not great about combining baking soda and vinegar in a narrow tube for a kid? My 6 year old had fun with this. That said, the design and assembly looked good on paper but have some glaring but easily corrected problems. Pros:
Fun
Stokes the imaginationCons:
Unnecessarily difficult to assemble (but easy to solve that, see below)
Directions missing a key stepIf you buy this toy, do these things to make life much easier:
1. If you use the tube supplied, make sure to attach the bottom on it before you do any other assembly. This was omitted from the directions.
2. If you use the tube supplied, instead of trying to thread the loooong string through the holes in the cardboard base, snip each hole on the cardboard base with some scissors so the hole becomes a slot.
3. Cut the string in half.
4. Instead of the tube supplied, which has a detached (read leaky) bottom, use some other plastic cup that is fully enclosed on the bottom and sides. That way when you pour the vinegar in it, it doesn't run out the bottom.

Cons Review
Great little volcano . My 8 year old son just finished building this volcano and is now waiting for the plaster to dry. He really enjoyed building it, although threading the string through all those tiny holes was a bit frustrating as the string is very long. It kept getting tangled, so I took over that part and cut it into more manageable lengths. There are a few extra knots under the volcano now, but the result is the same. My son enjoyed wetting the plaster strips, and layering them to build up his volcano. And in a few hours (hopefully?) it will be dry enough to paint. We've done the baking soda/vinegar experiment a few times now, so this project was more about building the volcano for him. I only paid about half the price it is listed on Amazon, so I'm pretty satisfied with the 40 minutes of hands-on entertainment it has provided my son. Please note: This is their small volcano (only about 3-1/2 inches tall when finished). It was a fun project though, so I think I'll order the large volcano also.

Did the job . This is pretty much exactly as advertised. The "magic solution" is a little worrisome, so I had to do all that part myself. But she really liked watching the crytals grow and it's easy to do!

This review is from : Smithsonian 900 x microscope with Case
Great Gift For a Young Scientist . I am very pleased with the Smithsonian Optics900X Microscope in Carry Case that I purchased for my 10 year old Grandson for Christmas. It was with great joy that I watched him open this gift and immediately begin to explore the microscopic world around us.I was even more pleased to be able to purchase this on Amazon because such products are virtually unavailable in regular stores. It is a shame that all the attention is given to video games and such rather than educational products involving science. The carry case is an added bonus that helps keep all the components organized. I would recommend having prepared slides included with this product. I did purchase prepared slides from another vendor and that is the only reason this product received 4 rather than 5 stars. I would highly recommend this product for intermediate elementary aged school children as an introduction to microscopic studies.

Cons Review
just a toy . We purchased this microspcope for our 9 year old so we weren't expecting it to be a professional tool. We are very disappointed by how it will only focus in the lowest setting. Controls are not tight. It is clearly meant to be just a toy and nothing else. A waste of money and the compnay is arguing over a return of the item.
BROKEN . This item arrived in the box as described. We put it out on X-mas eve for our daughter to find from Santa in the morning. She found it and loved it - until we out the batteries in and it did not work. After inspecting the unit I found a small wire was broken from the contact. This would not be such a big problem (easy enough to re-solder) except that it could not be threaded back into the housing due to the item being assembled. What a let down for a child in the AM!

Overall this is a cheaply made item. But something for a little more in terms of cost, or buy much cheaper (you will get about the same quality).

The one saving grace is that Amazon & the seller took back the item and credited my account. I have since bought another one ($20 more) and am waiting for it to be delivered.
Great first time microscope . I ordered this item for my son for Christmas (yep, getting an EARLY jump on the holiday! hehe), and I can't wait for him to get it out and start experimenting with it! He's going to be soo thrilled and happy with it!
MICROSCOPE . THE TURN AROUND TIME WAS GREAT ON THIS PURCHASE. IT IS A GIFT FOR MY LITTLE GRANDDAUGHTER FOR CHRISTMAS AND I KNOW SHE WILL ENJOY IT.

Feature Crystal Growing

  • For 1 person
  • For ages 10 and up
  • 2 D batteries required
  • Includes everything needed to make unique crystals at home
  • Colorful crystal-growing set for kids

Grows a beautiful crystal collection. . We got this kit for Christmas three years ago. I still have all of the crystals we grew on the display stand on my dresser. This kit is cool. It makes regular small crystals in lots of colors, and you can also make plaster molds to grow geodes. It does take a few days for the crystals to grow, but once their done, you can even paint one with glow-in-the-dark paint!
Do not order from this seller! . Do not order from this seller. I am a teacher and I have used Smithsonian crystal growing kits in my classroom for many years. They are great fun and always thrill the students. There are many possibilities for experimenting with growing the best crystals. But this seller is showing a kit to grow many different colors and types of crystals and geodes. That is not the kit they send. Instead I got a kit that grows 3 types and only 2 bags of powder instead of the 8 advertised. The kit I received is also good, but it is $10. less than what I paid. Beware from this seller!
A disappointment . We never got a single chrystal to grow! Despite my children's much needed patience, they were always disappointed at every attempt.
AMAZING . This crystal set is great. They are easy to make take a only a few days to grow. They are very pretty. You will be sorry if you don't get it.
Waste of money . Bought this for my 9 year old son. We followed the directions and got a mess. Not at all what is in the description. He was very disappointed as was I.

Best Smithsonian Smithsonian Micro Rock and Gem Dig Opinions

Price : $12.99

Smithsonian Smithsonian Micro Rock and Gem Dig Opinions -

Smithsonian Micro kits are a true everyday product for that quick science fix.

  • Product Dimensions (inches): 1.5 (L) x 6 (W) x 7 (H)
  • Age: 8 to 14 years

Cons Review
not worth the money . It was tedious for the kids to chip into the rocks, and when they finally managed to finish the project, the 'gems' (colored glass for the most part it seemed) were almost microscopic.

You're better off taking the kids to the beach and looking for real rocks and seashells. Don't waste your money.
Fun for kids interested in learning . Great fun. Our son spent so much time and care chipping away at the sandblock to find the gem. It was very rewarding for him to find the gems. Next step is to scientifically identify the minerals. The gems were very small.
A fun little project for your budding archaeologist! . I bought this for my 4 year old because I thought it would be a good way to get her interested in gem stones, geology, and archaeology and that it would be a fun activity for a rainy day. I highly recommend it!It comes with a little wooden mallet and dowel and one of those crappy paintbrushes that comes with the cheap water color paints. The paintbrush was totally useless but she had fun with it anyway. The block of hard sand is about 4 x 6 inches. An adult can use their bare hands and work to break it apart, but a kid is not going to be able to do that. Its hard enough to stay together, but breakable enough for a kid to chisel away at it without have to pound too hard.It took us about an hour to get all of the gems out. They were mostly concentrated in the middle and my daughter spent a long time pulverizing every bit of the stuff. She absolutely loved every second of it. For the price I was not expecting big gemstones like on the box so I was not disappointed that they were tiny little stones. YOU WILL NOT GET BIG GEM STONES, they will be teeny tiny! There will be at least 6 of them though. We got a rock and 7 gem stones (2 bits of jasper, 2 bits of mahogany obsidian, 2 adventurine, and 1 rock crystal). It comes with a little paper with information about gem stones and rocks and pictures of the stones you may find so that you can identify them. We were unsure about some of them so we also searched through pictures online and it was a great activity for her to try to figure out the similarities and differences between our stones, and the pictures we were looking at (example: I wasn't sure if we had aventurine or amazonite so we talked about the difference in colors, patterns, texture, etc.). While she was doing the dig we talked about archaeology and how they dig up stones, bones, dinosaurs, old tools, etc. We also talked about how gem stones are mined to make the jewelry we wear.It was a good learning opportunity for my 4 year old, and for an older kid there is much much more that they can learn about while doing this little project. I think this is especially good for homeschoolers who are looking for hands-on learning. I plan to get another one of these for now since they are so cheap so she can add to her collection, and later on I may shell out more money to get a better quality gem dig that comes with some larger stones. :)
Fun Activity . My 7.5 year old son received this for Christmas. He had a great time chipping away to find the stones. Fun hands-on activity for boys and girls. The rocks are quite small.

Smithsonian Diggin Up Dinosaurs T-Rex - * Dig up a plastic skeleton of a t-ren * Waiting to be unearthed * Assemble the bones * Into a cool t-rex * Detailed instructions

This review is from : Smithsonian Diggin' Up Dinosaurs T-Rex
Works best for the younger ones . This works best with the under 6 crowd, especially if you hide it outside and then pretend to find it. They are still gullible at that age and don't question that the skeleton is plastic. It's on the small side so you have to claim it's a baby or something. For the older kids, I think it's more educational than amazing.

The only drawback was the quality of the fit. I had trouble getting the skeleton pieces to stay together. It took a 5 minute epoxy job later that night to get everything to hold together and that didn't last beyond some basic play. It's made to stay on a shelf and be looked at. That said, for $15.00, it's just fine.
Smithsonian Diggin' Up Dinosaurs T-Rex Reviews
Awesome Project! . My 4 year old simply loved this project and carries the skeleton model around everywhere. I was worried about it being for 8+ year olds. He had very little problems with it. An adult needed to attach the legs. Be prepared for a powdery, rocky mess - but worth it. Our only problem was the dinosaur's head went down our sink hole so we're trying to figure out how to find another head ;o) Will definitely get the Velociraptor.
Smithsonian Diggin' Up Dinosaurs T-Rex Opinions
An 8-year old dug it! . This was a birthday present for my eight-year old daughter. She had great fun digging it up at her birthday party. Safety was not an issue with the wooden mallet and the included goggles though I would note that she reported the goggles as uncomfortable. The cleaning of the bones was a bit challenging for an eight year old as was the assembly of the whole dinosaur so she needed help from an older sibling. A great toy for dinosaur fans, aspiring young archaeologists or simply children with some curiosity and capacity for wonder.
Great experience! . My 4 year old son enjoyed this toy so much I had to write a review. For an hour solid he hammered away at the block of sand, wacking his hand numerous times but never complaining. He had so much fun and every minute was shouting to show me something he had chisled out. As a parent I loved the hand-eye coordination aspect of it as well as the sense of discovery. I am ordering the velociraptor one now and wish there were more options.
A+++ GREAT toy! :o) . This is the best toy ever. Our 5 year old is completely captivated. I *wish* I had had a toy like this when I was little. He is in his own world just sitting out on the deck hammering away. I am online trying to find more of these as we speak. A+++ :o)
Nice for all the little Palentologists . My son received this for his 6th birthday. He had received a similar toy from a different manufacturer in the past and had enjoyed that and worked at it for over a month on and off. This project was much quicker to "excavate". He had a lot of fun with it but he had all the pieces removed within an hour or two. Not wanting the mess from the block in my house I had him work on it outside, it can be quite messy although was not half as bad as the one from the other manufacturer that he had used prior. My son was quite excited with the T-Rex skeleton that he found. The pieces go together quite easily. It was not something that kept well though as he wanted to play with it in his dinosaur playset and he kept breaking it apart with the pieces eventually becoming lost to the place where lost toy pieces go. I must say that several months after it was purchased his grandmother found the exact same item at a local store for only $10, which I would say is a better price. She did buy him another one which we will save until the weather becomes nice again and we can get back outside to use it. Gotta love winter in the Northeast!!
Smithsonian Diggin Up Dinosaurs T-Rex . My son loved this! He spent hours at the table digging for bones and once they were all found, put the dinosaur together and still has it in his room!
Mason will be thrilled on his upcoming birthday . I took my grandsons to an ice cream place and what fascinated my none year old grandson, Mason, was that a boy at a nearby table had a Smithsonian toy with hammer and other parts that helped him "dig for treasure" and reveal the hidden pieces. He walked over close to watch, but he did not speak to the boy.

A few weeks later, I saw this type of Smithsonian toy on sale at Amazon. The one we'd seen was a building. The one I got Mason was a T Rex, because he has more interest in animals.

He will open his gift on his July birthday and be excited to have his own.

Mopsy
Niece loved it! . We bought this as a gift for our 5 year old niece who loves science and dinosaurs and she said it was her favorite birthday present!
Missing a leg . I was pretty excited that this was a Smithsonian toy, and then disappointed that it was not as good as the cheaper fossil kits. The "fossil" was slightly more brittle and more difficult to piece together, and then it was missing a leg--a hind leg. The T-rex fossil obviously won't stand up without one of the back legs. Other than that, the tools were great and it came with goggles, which my four-year-old was excited about for about two minutes.
