Great for the young scientist! . I bought this for my 12-year-old for Christmas. He's been having a ball with it, and learning a lot. My only complaint was that it didn't come with something to organize all the little pieces. But I noticed that ahead of time, and was prepared with a small tackle box for him to put everything in. So far, he's been able to do most of the projects with minimal assistance.

Nice colection . Haven't had too much time to look at it myself but the one I bought it for has spent enough time reading through the history and how to do the experiments that I know it is well liked. Definitely a good buy for the inquisitive young science student.

Expensive but packed with content . This was our son's "big gift"; he's a 7 yr old who wants to be a scientist when he grows up. Highly recommend purchasing a tackle box or some storage solution to store all of its small parts. While we realize most of the stuff you could cobble together yourself, for us, it was just easier to purchase a science kit with all the parts. I knew the science experiment materials would be made of cheap plastic (and they were), but I was expecting a hardcover, sturdy book for this price. Unfortunately the "manual" is a flimsy paperback (why I rate this product a 4). However, the content of the book is great - jus wish it were more durable. So far we've completed 4 experiments and they've been easy to follow with great discussion questions. It's a lot of fun and very educational (not in a boring way).

Dinosaur Science Project . I bought this for my 6 year old's science project. We followed the included directions and performed the excavating of this Tyrannosaurus Rex. Things learned: Examining Teeth, Understanding Skeletons, Excavating and assembling the Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. It was raining the day we were going to do the dig. I decided to do the dig on our dining room table. I used play sand to cover the skeleton and then brought my son in to do the dig. This worked well and wasn't as messy as I thought would be. It's a fun activity and the model is designed to be taken apart and reused. The base of the model is a little unstable if you are planing to transport this to school like we did. I had to put a few extra screws in the 3 part base to keep the model firm so that we could transport it to the classroom.

AWESOME!!! . If you have a child that is into dinosaurs and/or digging in the sand box......THIS IS A MUST!!! Even if your child is too young for the educational materials you can still guide them through a dig. Sooo cool. My 7yo helped to set up the dig sight. He and his grandpa set up the stakes. Then we sent him inside so we could place the bones. This way he would have to hunt for them and not just dig them back up. He spent most of the day going out to find more pieces (in 100+ weather!) He just couldn't wait to set the whole thing up.

We now have the skeleton on display. The skeleton is very detailed and over a decent size. I would compare it to an adult (medium to large) cat. We also bought a t-rex sand mold and made plaster bones that can be left in the "dig sight" all the time. I think he was a bit young to be doing the worksheets alone but I am sure that we will be using this again in the future. This would be a cool addition to a Dinosaur Themed Birthday Party. Shop around we found this here for a great price. Worth every penny!!!

Teachers, your students will LOVE this. I wasn't into dinosaurs as a kid but I would have thought this was a cool lesson plan. I love the hands on approach this offers.

This happens to go right along with what my son wants to be when he grows up. He wants to be an "archeologist" just like Indiana Jones. In his mind they dig up dinosaurs too. He is forever digging in the sand and getting excited over things he finds. He has been very into dinosaurs forever and I don't see that changing anytime soon. We have a whole section of books on dinosaurs in their shelves and he never fails to check out dinosaur related books from the library. What a great way to indulge his interest. The adults enjoyed themselves just watching his enthusiasm.

Geoworld Trex in review . I like this particular Tyrannosaurus Rex model because of several unique
features. First and foremost, its size. At three feet, its quite large. The
coloring of the simulated bones is fairly realistic. The model came in a box
which when opened had bags pre marked with numbers. An instruction sheet is
used to guide you on how to put the Trex together. My first impression of the model was "wow", but the wow soon turned into reality as I began the slow
and painstaking efforts to put Trex together. The product is geared towards
6 years old and up. However, it took me well over three hours to put Trex
together. A few of the pieces would not go together as well as others which
slowed the assembly process. Undeterred, I kept at it. While assembling one part, the other part would fall apart. This was minor, but for a child it may be a bit to much. I suggest adults take active part in this because the
assembly is far more difficult than advertised. However, once done, it was
worth all the wait. A stand, two metal rods, a nameplate and of course all
the various bones to make the Trex are what comes in the box. Also the
instructions. The appearance is very well done. The Trex skull is very
well done with all the cavities and teeth one might expect to find in a Trex
skull. The rib cage was a little difficult because the plastic used in this model, while durable is also prone to bending and staying in that position while still in the box. Many of the rib cage bones were bent and needed a little adjustment to get them just right. Again, no big deal. As for the rest
of the skeleton, it was difficult because again it seemed as though I needed
a third hand to complete the Rex. It really does go together much like a puzzle. Once completed it looks great and receives many compliments on size,
accuracy, realism. It may be tempting to use glue with this model. I highly
suggest you think that one over. Once glued that's that. There are alternative ways of dealing with the parts which fall apart while assembling
others. I used very fine wire and threaded it through the various bone
structures and more or less tied the bones together. Very fine black wire is
hard to see and will not detract in any way from the actual product once completed. Additionally it can be disassembled for transport or moving. I
think the model is beautiful, well made and well thought out. Was it difficult? Yes. However, one must have patience when working with these types of models. I have four Trex model skeletons. Of the four, this is my
favorite. it actually went together much like one in a museum. Its display is
also fairly real. Price was very low for a model this size. As far as children being marketed for this model. That's okay so long as an adult helps with the assembly. It is very hard to put together, but the wait, as I stated earlier, is well worth it. In terms of educational value, I give this
model 5 stars across the board. Any child wishing to have an accurate model
of a Trex skeleton will like this one the most. One other word of advice. I
don't consider this a toy, but it is a life like representation of a Trex
skeleton. I highly suggest once made it get displayed were you know it will not be touched by curious hands.

Great for kids 10 and under . Purchased as an 'impluse buy' for my 11 year old son.. He loves those grabby things and I thought that he would like this one that is shaped like a hand.. It was well made, shipped quickly and would be a great product for children under 10.. my son..thought it was great but it quickly ended up in the toybox. I actually moved it into the trunk of my car and it works great for that can of tomatoes that rolls to the back of the trunk LOL.. A great product and would purchase again for a younger child.

a good homeschool science item or just for fun!! . This a great item for a curious child...there are 100 experiments that allow a child (and the equally interested parent..at least in our case!!) to examine basic principles as well as delve deeper with the included additional activities to further prove the role of science in everyday events. The kit starts off with water-based experiments, moves on to those addressing air, heat, sound, force, magnets, electricity, electro-magnetism, light/shadow, optical instruments, plants/animals, colors, the human body, earth/sun, and chemistry...while some of the experiments only take a few minutes, other will take considerably more time to accomplish, so some days you may complete multiple experiments, some days you will only get part way through the experiment you are working on...a good variety of chalenges that will keep most young researchers interested and, with this kit, i have found that my 10 year old is apt to start becoming creative with where he could go next with what he discovers...quite an impressive kit!! The only negative i would include about this item is that you DO have to purchase batteries for some of the experiments, as well as provide basic items such as sugar and salt and such...while this is not a big deal, the lack of these items can effectively disable the day's experiment, so be warned!!!
One other minor detraction...the tools and supplies appear to be rather "play-like" in quality, but, in their defence, so far, everything has performed as well as, or better than, expected.
I purchased this item on sale, and as a homeschooling mom i have found this to be a positive addition to our school schedule...however, homeschooling aside, this kit will certainly delight any young inquisitive child...and the instructions are well written, and the text has a number of cute cartoons that reinforce the learning, as well as plenty of clear illustrations throughout...Overall, a good buy at full price, an excellent investment if you find it on sale!!

Great first science kit for my 8 year old daughter. . We purchased this kit for our 8 year old daughter for Christmas. I was a little concerned that it might be above her head since the kit is recommended for ages ten and up. Our daughter is a very strong reader so we hoped for the best.

She is enthralled with this kit. She spent all afternoon with it the first time she used it. Most importantly, she learned from every experiment that she did, and was successful with every one that she tried. She could hardly wait to show her younger sisters. She just skimmed through the manual and would stop at one that caught her interest. Some are simple effects, but with pretty impressive results, especially for a kid. Although many of the experiments seem simple, the underlying science, which is described in the manual, is usually important. Each experiment has a point to make and they seem to do it well. As a parent, you may want to consider paying close attention to the point of the experiment to see if your child grasps it. For example, one that she tried involved charging a balloon by rubbing it in her hair. No big deal, who needs a science kit for that? Well, they had her sprinkle salt and pepper and mix them. When she brought the charged balloon near the mixture, the pepper all leapt to the balloon, leaving only salt behind. It was a pretty effective demo. She did not remain silent when it happened. Then you can imagine her further reaction when she noticed some of the pepper flakes leaping back off the balloon like fleas into the salt, only to leap back to the balloon again. The point is that she was seeing evidence of the internal structure of salt vs. pepper (salt is an ionic crystal and pepper is not and can be easily polarized). She was learning and having fun at the same time. Now my youngest daughters are rubbing balloons in their hair and watching them repel each other (the balloons, not the kids...)

She does need a small amount of guidance in opening vials, using the provided measuring spoon, and with a pretty complicated sticker of Earth's surface that is supposed to go on a styrofoam ball. Even a ten year old will need a small amount of help with some of the items, but not much. Should be a piece of cake for a typical 12 year old. There are some experiments in the kit (such as making the electric motor) that actually fascinate college students.

The components of the kit are simple, but not hokey. I am a scientist myself and can vouch for the experiments that I have seen thus far, and that I saw in the large experiment manual.

This is a good set. It is quite well thought out and organized. It is very safe. For some experiments, be prepared to provide household items such as a strand of thread, salt and pepper, a comb, a few cabbage leaves to make your own pH indicator, two batteries, etc. Does not make a mess that a vacuum can't clean up.

The magnets provided work for the experiments, but it would have been nice if the kit came with stronger ones, especially the ring magnet.

NOTE: Our kit was sent with the 1st edition manual for the 2nd edition kit. The 2nd edition recommends standard 1.5 volt batteries. If your manual recommends a different voltage, read the bulbs to make sure they match the battery recommendation.

worth the money . We bought this for my 5 year old for Christmas and she loves it. We use it as a reward to get her to do her chores and such. It is really worth the money. It comes with most everything you need and explains science behind the experiments.

Well... . I got this for my daughter who is pretty smart. At first when she saw it she was thrilled, but I think she quickly saw that well... maybe this is a little light for what she likes. Anyway good product and I hope your kid enjoy it.

Better than most but not as good as it could be . I have purchased other electronics experiment type kits for my son, most of which are marginal at best. This one is better, but for the money it still comes up short. Wire lengths are just long enough to reach, but in saving a penny they still make it hard to open the shell of the console and not pull the wires out. The battery compartment is marginal, has no actual retention feature. The led lights (all 2 of them) do not fit snuggly in the console holes, and fall out with the slightest bit of pressure (ie, when you open the console shell since the wires are too short). BTW, the warning that you will burn out an LED if you fail to place a resister in line with the battery is documented, but the fact is that a child will no doubt make the mistake and place it in line without the resister -> time to go to Radio Shack. Why not throw in a handfull of LED's? They are cheap (a lot cheaper than the gas to drive to Radio Shack), and then your customer can learn by messing it up - a time tested and honored learning tool. The console allows you to place the unused selection of components above the work area, which is nice - however, the console is hinged, and it really could be improved if there was the ability to place the unused components inside the clamshell design with a similar setup - this would again be very inexpensive since it would only require properly spaced holes to slide the resistors, caps, etc into. With that said, the premise is great, the implimentation of a test bed is very well done, and the workbook that comes with the set is the best that I have seen anywhere. It shows considerable thought and is relatively comprehensive. Again, it is much better than the $30 kits, but it should be for $100. Some minor design changes and this would be a must have.

Disappointing garbage . The pieces don't fit together, poor build quality and esoteric instructions. Skip the frustration and disappointment that your children will face and buy a different kit. Thames and Kosmos spend their time and energy creating fancy packaging with garbage inside. Just worthless.

Cons Review

Great Educational Electrical Kit . My daughter worked on picking this exact kit out. She wanted one with actual wires, not just the plastic snap kits. Because of the bare wires, I would not consider this "toy" extra durable, because they can break. She's very exicted to be doing the experiments, and the book is very educational, as it explains what each of the devices are, and the basics of how they each work.

Poor walkie talkies and the rest doesn't make up for the cost . The Spy Gear Expert Mission Case essentially comes with three components.

1) Walkie-talkies. Unfortunately, the amount of static on these makes them useless. You're better off getting a cheap pair of real, FRS 2-way radios.
2) Spy Audio Car. As noted in the other reviews, this is not a remote controlled vehicle. Nonetheless, the audio quality is surprisingly good. The cord on the earphone seems flimsy but so far it has held up.
3) Agent Tool Kit. This is a pen & locking hard case that contains accessories that you can add to the pen to turn it into a:
- flashlight
- telescope
- motion detector & alarm

These come in a hard plastic case with plastic latches. There's a removable insert that holds the pieces, but it's made of egg-crate cardboard and doesn't last very long.

This kit might have been worth the cost if the radios had worked, but it's definitely overpriced without them.

Not worth the money . Was expecting a lot more for the money. I expected the car to be a remote control, but it was just a pull back wind up toy. Just was expecting a little more for the money. Don't waste your time.

Spy Gear Bonanza . My 6 yr old grson loved this mega spy assortment. He has many of the other Spy Gear items but this one was not to be found anywhere in our area and it was the major item on his Christmas list. He took it out put it together and was setting up his booby traps all over. Then when done all went back into the case. Something I like especially as toys are spread all over otherwise and parts seem to go missing. Highly recommend this item. Even the 18 month old was trying to use it.

Son loves it . I bought this product for my son on amazon. This is one of the only places I can really find spy gear, walmart only carries so much. He was so happy it got here. He was full of anticipation for a week. Then when it came, he was overjoyed. He has been playing with this toy for sometime now and I was really surprised at everything that came with it. Everything is very durable and has lasted for awhile now. I would definitely recommend this toy for children. Great product!

Cons Review

A great assortment at a good price . We knew our son wanred spy gear this year, so we started shopping around. In all our looking, two things influenced our purchase of this set: 1) the assortment of items, and 2) the hard case.

The assortment allows for much more play time, and for play involving more children (be they siblings or friends), and the hard case makes it more difficult (though not impossible) for younger ones to get into the spy gear when it is not in use.

Our son's favorite item has been the pull-back car with the remote listening sensor. We've had to talk to him about boundaries when using the device, as we've caught him trying to listen in on private discsussions (e.g., discussions with his siblings about their grades). The walkie-talkies are also a popular item. He really likes the way he can lock up the smaller items in the mini-case that needs the pen to unlock it.

The price for the set (just under $50 when we purchased it) was much better than trying to buy each of the items separately (or in the collection of other sets in which they are found). It proved to be a great deal, and a real hit with our son.

A NOTE ON BATTERIES

You definately will need a lot of batteries for this set--mostly 9-volt (9v, not "D" as listed by another reviewer--they are rectangular, but are 9-volt or 9v, not "D"). While the set needed more batteries than I expected, they have also lasted longer than expected, too (almost three weeks and no drained batteries yet).

very fun spy gadgets . It is very fun and me and my cousin love to play with it.We spy on the whole family.

Fun for a while . I bought this toy for my seven year old nephew. He didnt really seem to be interested in it at first but when he got it open and started playing playing with it his interest in the audio car spiked. It gave him a good hour of enjoyment before he moved on to the next toy. The other toys in the package seemed to be something one would buy from the dollar store. Overall, the package is a stretch from the normal quality of other Spy Gear toys. If it wasnt for the car I wouldnt recommend this product but since he really enjoyed the car I would get another if I had to. For twenty dollars, the bang was worth the buck.

Fun but a battery eater . This is a decent toy for our son, who loves the spykids, cody banks, etc movies. It has a nice secret pen laser light kit, a manual push radio listen-in car, and weak walkie talkies (they carry a lot of static and noise). However, our son loves the belt spy gear kit that has smaller parts and toys, and is more activity inducing. This boxed set does require MANY batteries, the most expenssive being the "D" rectangular batteries. It also takes AAA/AA batteries. So make sure to check out how many of each kind you need. Otherwise, this toy goes nowhere.
