Carnivorous Terrarium with Live Plants - Grow your own feared and famous meat eating plants. This terrarium features the infamous Venus Trap. The leaves of a Venus Fly Trap are covered with fine hairs. When an insect lands on the plant, the pressure on these hairs causes the jaw-like foliage to snap closed, trapping the insect inside.
The diabolical Cobra Plant. The unsuspecting insect crawls down the cylindrical stem and is unable to get out. The plant hairs all point down making an escape impossible. The hopeless insect is then slowly dissolved into plant food.
And finally the harmless looking Sundew Plant. It lures, captures, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surface. The insects are used to supplement the poor mineral nutrition that sundews are able to obtain from the soil they grow in.
The acrylic terrarium is 6 inches tall and 6 inches wide. Included in the kit are 3 live carnivorous plants, Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea), Sundew (Drosera), and Cobra Plant (Sarracenia). Plus we include the soil and instructions.

Doesn't look like the picture so far -- hopefully it will make it . My son wanted Grow Your Own Carnivorous Creations Terrarium but after reading the horrible reviews and the advice that you buy plants that were already grown, I thought this would be a good alternative.
The terrarium comes empty with a zip lock bag of mulch and 3 dixie-cup containers with the live plants in them. Ordinarily, it would have been fun to plant those with my son but since the plants weren't looking too perky, I figured I had better get them planted as soon as possible.
The instructions for planting were somewhat vague and I'm still not sure if I did it correctly -- time will tell. The plants aren't as big or as hearty looking as the picture -- hopefully they'll perk up in the next couple of days and start to thrive.
A few things to note:
1. Only one plant came with a "stick" that told you what it was.
2. There were no "care instructions" included with the plants -- we are going to have to research and wing it.
3. The plants themselves were in this brownish mossy type material -- don't know what that was and if it was important to have all of it included as part of the planting. More info would have been nice.
4. You have to use "rainwater" or "distilled water" to water this so make sure you have some on hand...
Overall, while the pictures make this looks great, right now ours bears very little resemblance to the pictures. Hopefully it will continue to grow and thrive. However, I really wish there had been better documentation.
I'll update my review as we get a better handle on whether these guys survive!

Carnivorous Terrarium with Live Plants . Short answer: Best $30 I have spent in a long, long time. Who knew you could buy plants online and have them arrive in something other than seedling form?
Long answer: I originally wanted some plants to have around the house just to look at, because we all know how a few plants can really liven up the place! I looked at the usual- orchids, bonsai trees, bamboo, etc then I remembered as a kid digging up pitcher plants and putting them around our fish pond so I thought well that's kind of an exotic thing to have since they don't grow in Boston (got to be unique, you know!)
Amazon ended up bringing me here, and I'll be upfront when I say I was extremely worried about this seller after reading so many "not really satisfied" costumer reviews- although their overall rating seemed to be decent. I decided I would go for it and if it was a big fail I'd know better next time. However, it was a pretty awesome experience.
I opted for the terrarium because you get a little bit of everything, but I also purchased the Parrot Pitcher Plant - Sarracenia - Carnivorous - Hardy, an extra Spoonleaf Sundew Plant -Drosera spathulata- Carnivorous, and Magical Mood Moss Terrarium with Green Glass Coaster.
The plants were shipped via USPS in a flat rate box. The extra sundew plant was enclosed in a plastic casing, but had spilled out (I don't blame the shipper for this because it was tucked nicely in the box seems like USPS probably got a little rough). The plants for the terrarium were tucked under packing peanuts and taped firmly into their holders (worked surprising well). The parrot pitcher arrived flawlessly- I was completely amazed at the quality. It was placed into an upside down dixie cup and taped into place, but there was moisture collected in the cup which is why I suspect it did so well. Also, I had a delivery date that was a week and some days after I placed my order which scared me because I didn't think they would make it in a box with no sunshine plus heat for more than a few days, but they arrived two days after I ordered them! (Pictures of how the plants arrived in the Customer upload section)
The fly traps had a few dead heads as well as the pitchers, but I expected it since it has been scorching hot- the others were completely fine. If you live where it's really hot I would wait until it cools off since it gets so hot in delivery trucks. The soil looks like pure peat and comes in a ziplock bag (however it may have a mix of something else since these guys usually live in low nutrient and mineral bogs). It also comes with instructions that are pretty straight forward: fill container with peat, plant each plant, soak bog with rain water or distilled water, lots of light and partial sunshine, watch your bog grow! Remember if you give these guys bottled water it WILL kill them (also you can't boil water, just incase it crossed your mind.)
After I trimmed the dead stalks, planted, and named them they have been doing great. I couldn't be happier with this purchase and the seller. I plan on purchasing some "boring" house plants from the same seller since I am not near a nursery.
Also, not sure if it is worth mentioning but I went to their actual website ([...]). You check out through Amazon, but it seemed to me I would be charged shipping for EACH item whereas on their website it only increases a couple of dollars for each item; not entirely sure if this is true though since I didn't go through Amazon.

Great! . It has been about a month or so - and the plants are still alive!! I figure that is always a good sign!

Great little terrarium. . While shopping around for a small window sill sized Terrarium, I saw this offered by Hirt's Gardens and thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did. The Terrarium arrived well before the anticipated delivery date and very well packed to prevent damage during shipping. Everything was fine apart from the Drosera (Sundew), which had been completely flipped in its tiny pot. I thought it had gone missing during packing but a closer look showed it was there.
After filling the base with the supplied potting mixture, the plants were carefully planted and the whole thing was given a thorough watering with distilled water. A brief note here; NEVER use tap or bottled water as these will eventually kill your plants. Only rain water or distilled water should be used for these plants.
I've seen reviews that said it didn't look like the pictures, well that's true especially if you order during the plants natural dormant season. Also, bear in mind the picture is of an established Terrarium and not the same as the starter plants you will receive. Chances are you will receive, as I did, smaller juvenile plants that will grow once planted.
A few reminders:
Only rain or distilled water should be used. I prefer rain water, hey it's free!
Never give your plants ANY kind of fertilizer, it will kill them.
If your Flytrap puts out a flower stalk it should be trimmed off. If you decide to let it flower remember that it will steal nutrients from the plant that could be used for more traps.
Do your research! There are plenty of excellent articles on the net about plant care.
Depending on what plant and subtype you buy your plants might have a dormant season (winter), research the individual dormancy needs of your plants.
NEVER try to skip the dormant period as your plant needs this and will suffer if it doesn't "have a rest".
Don't be tempted to play with the traps of the Flytrap. Each trap has a limited number of closings and each false alarm robs the plant of resources.
Carnivorous plants are fascinating to grow and not as hard as you might think.
Oh and one last thing----DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Not only are all the plants still alive but each one has shown tremendous growth since I got them in late January. The Sundew is fast displacing the others due to 19 little baby plants that have grown around the base of Mom. The Pitcher plant, after a slow start, now has two huge new pitchers, a third is forming at the base of the plant, that easily handle a large house fly. The pitchers have grown out of the hole in the dome and needs repotting. Lastly after a worrying time the Flytrap is growing strong and healthy with plenty of eager traps ready for any hapless insect that wanders by.
I plant to move each species into it's own terrarium soon so each one can have its own specific growing requirements rather than the generalized one they get now.
All in all the best $30 I've spent in ages.

Carnivorous Terrarium . I purchased this as a gift for my 15 year old son. It arrived a few days before the expected delivery date (bonus). It was well packaged with simple instructions that were easy to follow. The plants were smaller than I expected but we have had it a month and they are all alive and flourishing. Their growth rate is fantastic. I did some of my own research to find out how much lighting they need (a very sunny window). Overall everyone in the household is pleased with these plants.
Still ALIVE! . It's been about 2 weeks and I have budding leaves and pods on all my plants. All three are living and are vibrate. I am using an indoor light set always to spring and man, they love the lighting. I highly advise this product!
Carnivorous plants via the internet . This kit contains a plastic terrarium that's 6" wide (think smallish cantaloupe sized) and 3 plants.The box came via USPS and the contents were shaken up quite a bit when I opened the box upon arrival. They were well packed in packing peanuts, and shipping something as fragile as a small plant requires one to have reasonable expectations on how well it can be protected in shipment. This said, the plants were separated from their soil containers and had gotten beaten up a bit in shipment. They were well wrapped and still moist however. I was a little concerned about their condition and viability upon first inspection, but I went ahead and planted the 3, a venus fly trap, a cobra plant, and a sundew, in the supplied planting mix inside the terrarium.After having them for 2 months (purchased in mid-December) and keeping them on a table near an east facing window and watering them with distilled water weekly, they are thriving. The cobra plant has a new large pitcher, the venus fly trap is growing multiple new traps, and the sundew is thriving and has a flower stalk emerging. So, dilapidated condition upon arrival notwithstanding, these plants are able to bounce back after a bit of rough handling, and so I can assume they were very healthy upon shipment. The instructions are adequate. They do stress that distilled water or captured rainwater is needed for these plants to remain healthy.Minor complaint: The plastic terrarium was sealed with transparent "scotch" tape whose adhesive was very difficult to remove.This is a fascinating project for school aged children with plants that reverse the usual "bugs eat plants" role.I would buy more plants from this vendor with no qualms, and plan to do so when we transplant our carnivorous garden into a larger container.
Great little terrarium . Came with everything we needed, along with care instructions. Great customer care from Hirt's. We needed to have a couple plants replaced since the originals had to travel through some sub-zero temps. Hirt's was very helplful and understanding. My son now has a thriving terrarium.
Fantastic plants and customer service! . This is the best place we have ever bought carnivorous plants! Our plants arrived just a few days after we ordered, and they we in great shape, with pots and the highest grade spagnum moss sent for potting. Joel was fantastic whenever we had questions. We would email him, and he would reply right away. We would highly recommend this vendor. And our plants are thriving!!!
Cons Review
Great Concept Poorly Executed: Misleading Photo . Purchased this as a gift for my 8-year old son who really wanted a venus fly trap for his birthday. These plants are so small -- none taller than two inches -- that we simply opted not to give it to him. While the plants may actually grow into maturity over time, you will not receive anything remotely resembling the photo. You can do a lot better financially buying three mature plants and putting them in a cheap plastic bowl by yourself.
