An excellent little portable telescope . I purchased this scope when, after being out of the hobby of astronomy (more or less) for 20 years, I was bitten by the bug and got back in. I was looking for a telescope that was portable and had a goto ability. This little scope delivers. If you're looking for a scope that will deliver Hubble like views, you're not going to find it here (or in any amateur instrument). However, since June this scope has showed me eclipses on Jupiter by one if it's satellites (Io), one of the rare(of late) sunspot groups on the sun (using a solar filter I purchased elsewhere), Jupiter - Uranus - Neptune - Venus all in the same night. Beautiful star clusters, colorful double stars, a few galaxies (albeit, the galaxies were just faint smudges of light) and quite a few nebulae. If you're already familiar with using a binoculars for your astronomical viewing, think of this as one half of a giant binocular...the views will be similar, but with the added bonus of being able to increase the magnification by changing eyepieces.

If you do purchase this scope, I highly recommend that you also purchase the Meade 6.4mm eyepiece...this will offer greater magnification for viewing the moon and planets and for splitting very close double stars. For clusters and nebulae the included eyepieces are just fine (I use the 9.7 the most).

Is the scope perfect? No...the focus mechanism takes a little practice to get used to and requires too many turns to refocus when using the barlow. Also, the batteries don't last as long as Meade claims (figure about 5 - 10 hours of use). However, this scope is an excellent bargain...very good optics, highly portable, and a goto system that makes it easy to find your targets in light polluted skies or when time is short and you need to make the most of it. Highly recommended.

Great multi-use scope! . I purchased this for my science teacher wife. She was thrilled. It is of exceptional quality and durability. Very compact and the fact that it can be used for both astronomical and terrestrial purposes is a big plus. The tripod is of good quality and light weight. Even so it seems quite sturdy. I would highly recommend a 5-10 lb weight suspended from the scope mount center. It will make images far more stable. If you have difficulty picking out night-sky objects the Autostar can be a big help in getting started. This is not a deep sky scope, more for lunar and planetary observations, bird watching and spying on neighbors (reviewer's note: the last is a joke...honest!).

A wonderful Telescope . This telescope is great for beginners entering the world of astronmy! It has a suceficent amount of power to see many great cestial bodies in the sky. I saw highly detailed craters of the moon and the craters of mars. The autostar controller guides you and can give a tour of the night sky for those wondering what to see in the sky . It also works with a camera to take pictures on land or sky.

Great Begginers Scope . When I purchased this telescope I didn't know what to expect. I thought that you take the telescope outside, punch in what object you what it to go to, and it moves. No...you have to align it, which also means buying a star atlas. One thing you never want to forget to do is explain to your kids that this image won't be like the pictures you see. Overall, this is just a scopefor lunar and planetary viewing.

ETX 80AT . Very nice telescope for my 13 year old nephew, it's great for beginners.
The autostar can be a little confusing though.

Great telescope for amateur astronomer . I bought this telescope for my 9 years old niece but I really enjoy too this experience.PRO:
a)It's easy to understand how it's work (whith the manual of course).
b)The tripod is usefull and it's easy to install the telescope on it.
c)Autostar works great and guide you to see the objects at night
d)The eyepieces are great (Jupiter looks very well with his four moons, Saturn its so clear but little)
e)It's work to see trees, birds, and nature, great!CONS:
a) I find the alignment hard, there's no way (at least I don't know how) to put the coordinates of the place you are. I live in Honduras, Central America, I put the country in the autostar, but that information I think makes the alignment not exact. Advice: the alignment it's with too stars, it's important to know the constellations to facilitate the alignment. Alignment could be difficult but not big deal!Sorry for my english (I am spanish speaker)

Great starter telescope . Here's the skinny: the telescope was easy to assemble and learning the ropes was somewhat easy with the included DVD. After using it for about two weeks one of the gear mechanisms failed and I was forced to return it. The Autostar feature is cool and after aligning the scope, you can search the heavens for a boatload of objects in the sky. One evening I was able to get a clear view of Jupiter and some cloud bands. I also saw four of its moons (which looked liked four pinpoints next to the huge planet). That's pretty cool if you ask me.

All in all the telescope worked fine up until it stopped working.

Autostar lives up to its name... . The telescope comes well packed, important if it is being shipped to Australia. Importantly, the software knew about my obscure home town, so setting it up was a doddle.... The one starry night we have had, (it's winter here), presented stars as points without coma, and the scope knew where they were. This purchase had a dual purpose, to look at beach and islands opposite our beachside holiday home and to look at the sky at night. It wins on both accounts.

Great starter scope . This is my first telescope and I really love it. It is very easy to use. The tripod is nice and sturdy and the extra slots for eyepieces is helpful. Autostar (the included 'software') is really cool. This is not software you put on your computer but rather a computerized system attached to the scope for finding objects and orienting the scope. Autostar makes it possible to quickly move to your object of choice in the night sky. For further help with this - check out the computer software called Stellarium.

We have been mainly using the telescope as a spotting scope for birding and observing other wildlife. For really getting into the stars, you do probably need one of the magnifiers - we haven't gotten that yet. I have zero regrets with this purchase.

Makes learning multiplication facts fun! . My daughter had been struggling to memorize her multiplication facts. Using traditional flash cards was boring and seemed like a chore. Once we got this product, we started using the cd and wrap up right away. Every morning she practices for about 5 minutes on the car ride to school (haven't used the book yet). Very Exciting to Watch . I got this for my 10 yr old son who loves plants. He planted these in the windowsill about 5 weeks ago. Within a week, close to 20 sprouts were there! Almost every seed germinated! Built very conveniently with cloth handles on top for easy handling. Now the Sensitive plants are about 3" tall with four sets of leaves. The venus fly traps (presumably) are about 1/2" tall and have stayed that way for the past few weeks. He has really enjoyed caring for these & watching to see what appears.

diappointing toy from Amazon . I bought this for my grandson who loves plants. The case was ok and he enjoyed setting it up. However, the seed packets were 2 years out of date. The quality of the case was average. The whole package was not worth more than $5.00. It takes at least 2 months for the seeds to germinate and unless you make up your own signs yu have no idea what is growing where. Definately not worth the money and little educational value......Amazon should contact the supplier about the out of date seeds.

Sturdy well-made and great for the visual learner . I homeschool my children. My 7yo was having a hard time understanding why borrowing/regrouping works but this made it "click" within 10 minutes, so much so that he can do many problems in his head now. I can think of many other concepts where these will be helpful and plan to get many years of use from these (he is the oldest of 5). Wish I'd gotten them 2 years ago. Our former math curriculum used dimes and pennies to teach place value but these manipulatives are much more intuitive.

Base ten Starter Set Plastic Blue . It's a great educational product. My only two complaints are the packaging and the activity guide. I thought it was going to include some kind of storage case, but it didn't. It just came in plastic bags. I'll just keep it in the cardboard box it came in, for now. The activity guide is one sheet of paper folded in half with few suggestions. I confused activity guide with activity book so I was disappointed when I saw the guide and not the book. Beside those two complaints, this product is great and I'm glad I made the purchase.

Great Base-10 blocks . These are durable base ten blocks that have become a lifesaver for teaching my child how to add and subtract. It comes with a workbook that I haven't needed to use yet, but it looks interesting. The box provided also does a great job holding the blocks when they are in storage. I highly recommend these base ten blocks!

Great! . This is the best price I could find "new" and we are glad we made the purchase. My three-year-old likes to build with them and my daughter (age 7) uses them with our math curriculum. You can find many free resources on the Net to use the blocks/system. Recommended.

great economical base ten set . I bought these for my kids to help reinforce the base ten concept. I allowed them to just play with them for a couple of days before diving into any real lessons. We have done a lot of "trading" exercises and I can see them really starting to grasp the concept. They have been very helpful.I do, however, see that there could be some problems with these manipulatives. The blocks are not weighted, so some children might have a difficult time understanding that the 1000 cube is ten times more than the 100 flat, since it clearly is hollow and does not weigh anything close to 10 times as much. I think for a truly multisensory experience purchasing a base ten set that is weighted would be helpful. Luckily for us, it has not been an issue, and for the great price I don't think it could be expected.My other criticism is the fact that there is only 1 thousand cube in the set and they are not offered seperately. 3 would have been ideal for me.On another note, these were cheaper for me to buy directly from Assessment Services. The set was $13.50 plus $9.50 shipping (orders over $100 get free shipping).

empty promises . The product description was misleading. First of all the included activity book supposedly covers 1-6 grade operations, but the revised version that came with our set only covers grades 3-6. We could have used more simplified operations that focused more on number concepts and relatedness. In the same vein, the 1000 unit cube isn't made of solid plastic like the other pieces in the set. This has caused some confusion when drawing comparisons between the different units...why would the thousand unit piece have the same weight as a 100 unit piece. Will be trying to contact Learning Resources to see if there's a replacement option for the book...would welcome suggestions on how to fix the empty thousands box...maybe we'll just switch to the solid wood option.

Cons Review

You may want to consider a different product . I just received these mineral & rock collections, and I cannot say that I'm impressed. I bought the "Geosafari" Mineral Collection ($16), Sedimentary Rock Collection ($16), Igneous Rock Collection ($16) and the Metamorphic Rock collection ($16). The inner trays are a flimsy plastic; not really suitable for displaying. In addition, the rock and mineral samples are soooo tiny, almost like pebbles. That was really disappointing. I would not recommend these for purchase. Amazon should consider finding a more complete selection presented in quality displays with samples that are at least 1 1/2" to 2" or larger. Thank you.

Satisfied . I purchased the set for my 11 year old daughter. The garnets in one of the samples was most impressive. No the samples are not huge but for a child starting a collection, this is the way to go. It gives them a chance to identify the minerals or rocks and to label them on their own. She enjoyed this the most and she has shown off her rocks to family and friends. The case is not for displaying the minerals but as a geology major in college, I can say the prices are reasonable for the products. I know some of the samples alone would cost more then $16 if the samples were larger then they are. The sizes are around 1 inch for each peice in the sample my daughter recieved.

GeoSafari Rock Collector Starter Set . If you are looking to introduce your children to starting collections, this is a great toy. Comes with a storage tray in reusable box if you don't want to invest immediately in collector boxes. Each rock is identified and has facts about it. Has all 3 sets of rock types so you can "grow" the interest.

Very nice . These cards are vibrant, beautiful and priced right. Couple things that I should note, not bad notes, just things to be aware of.

- The back of the cards is plain white
- The cards come on 4 X 4 sheets, so be prepared to cut them yourself. I used one of those desktop paper cutters and it worked great.

I would definitely recommend these if you are looking for photo cards. Great for language and other exercises.

Great telescope! . This is a great toy. Clear image, easy to use and it magnifies things perfectly. Before I bought this telescope I bought another one that didn't work very well and my child had to be very, very far away from objects in order to see them clearly. With this telescope, on the other hand, my child can magnify things that are relatively close to him such as a car down the street or a bird on a tree.

Best handheld telescope for a child . I looked at several handheld telescopes before buying this one. This one actually magnifies distant things. The focus really does work so you can see things clearly. Only complaint is the rubber piece that goes around your eye is not permanently attached so it could be a choking hazard for young children. Still I was impressed by the quality of the lens and image for under $10. Definitely recommend for children that want to play pirate or just look at stars/far away things.
