Good for the price! . We bought this for our niece for Christmas. Her grandfather bought her a more expensive set as well. To no avail, she and her grandfather (who is a science teacher) sat up till 2am trying to figure how to use the expensive set while she was able to start viewing slides and bugs within 15 minutes of opening this one. Nothing extravagant but a good buy for the price!

Cheap microscope . When I ordered this I didn't realize it was plastic. It also does not have a light built in so you have to use the mirror under the slide to reflect the light to see the slide. If I had known this I would not have ordered this one.

Great Beginner Set . This kit is perfect for kids, everything the little scientist needs to get started on their own experiments. This microscope is for beginners, but a great deal for the price.

GREAT starter microscope! . My daughter just received this microscope as a 5th birthday present. She's an inquisitive learner, and with a little bit of help (and an external light source) she quickly dove into exploration of the Starter Slides (available separately) that she also received. As mentioned, this microscope needs an external light source; however, I love the fact that it doesn't need batteries. It should last us for a while, or at least until she decides she'd like something larger.

another Jr. Science success . Back again for another Jr. Science Explorer kit. Not to be disappointed. The "identifying fibers" experiment was really cool. We found every kind of fiber to compare and even downloaded an extra Observation Worksheet to chart all of our findings. Great idea! Easy to use and very educational. Great value!

very flimsy . I bought this for my 8 yrs old son for Christmas as it was the best price I found, but you get what you pay for. It does not come with a light or anything so you have to sit next to a window to use it. I wish I had paid the extra 20 dollars and got him a sturdy one that would not have been so flimsy and not worked great. They say this product is for children over eight because if you have anyone with little hands it falls apart immediatly.

small microscope . I guess I missed the description on this- it is quite small. There is no light source. Your child needs to be able to manipulate a refractory glass just right to put the specimen in view. My son is happy with it, but I was a little disappointed. He is 7 and quite capable, but he struggles to line it all up and has to move all over the house to find the right sunlight. Also, if he just nudges it while trying to look, he has to re-adjust. I would have returned it, but he did not want to wait for another.

Cheap price but cheaply made . Cheap price for this microscope, but it is very cheaply made. An OK starter microscope, but if the person you are getting it for would like a good microscope, look for something more durable, and with a built in light.

Cheap toy microscope . This little microscope is so cheaply made I'm surprised it arrived intact. The focus adjustment is weak, lenses are clouded and the light source mirror won't stay where you put it. The only redeeming quality it has is the slides that come with it are ok but there weren't very many. Do not waste your money on this, it just may break by looking at it.

Cheap materials . The product fell apart right out of the box. The plastic is very cheap and not durable. Plus you could not see anything without pointing it directly into the light at a certain angle. Lose the exact spot and it didn't work at all. I bought this for my 9 yr. old based on another review. He was VERY disappointed and tossed it aside immediately. Next time I would spend more for something more durable.

Love it! . Our son received this for Christmas 2010 and he absolutely loved it. He was 6.5 at the time but still talks about it a year later. It is a quality kit with very clear instructions in a full size full color book plus a half size one to record observations. I highly recommend this kit!

Endless Combinations of Fun and Learning . I purchased these weighted numbers for my grandchildren in conjunction with the pan balance. It is a perfect learning toy for a toddler that grows w him/her. There are multiple uses for the weighted numbers... if you purchase a second set the child can be introduced to number recognition by tangibly finding the matching number or placing like numbers on opposite sides of the balance scale to see if they are even and match! As their skills grow the child can do number combinations i.e. 4 and 3 for 7. An art project can also be incorporated by tracing the numbers with a pencil. The uses are limited only by your imagination.

Great entry level robotics kit. . I bought this for my 15 year old nephew for Christmas. He built it in a couple of hours with some help. It took a bit of troubleshooting since he (we) ignored the errata sheet at first. Well, that's part of the fun. He went on to experiment with it. It comes with full schematics and theory of operation for someone to learn beyond the simple assembly and emperical experimentation.

A good idea... . I wanted to like this toy. It looked like a lot of fun, and it was educational also. However, after we put it together, it never worked right. We called the company and got a replacement part, and it still didn't work right. I don't know if the problem was a fundamental flaw in the design of the toy, or if we just got a defective one. We returned the product and have not decided whether or not to order another one.

not just for kids . My husband is a huge math nerd, and I got him this abacus to mess around with for his birthday. It came with a nice, clear set of instructions on how to do basic mathematical operations using the abacus, and he was able to extrapolate to much more complex operations. Catproof.

Great simple starter abacus . We are using this abacus to supplement my first grader's math skills. Its been working really well so far as she likes the tactile feel of using it to add and subtract. Its a great kids abacus, although I am learning along with my child as I never used one growing up. My 2yo also likes to get in on the fun. RightStart Math required an abacus which started this journey and its really been more rewarding than I expected.

Flimsy . This abacus is flimsy and each time my kids or I touch it, I fully expect the thing to break. I've used the abacus with my older child for homeschooling and teaching basic numeracy; however, it's cheaply made and I would prefer larger beaded abacus to use with my younger child. If I could go back in time, I would purchase a wooden Slavonic abacus.

fun way to learn math . I bought it for my 4 year old; she already learned how to use it. I like this abacus better than the multicolored ones, it may be easier for decimal system problems.

My son is now interested in math, and the colored beads in the denominations of 5 have been very helpful in our current math program. Perfectly fine starter abacus . I purchased this for my kinder/1st grade daughter. It is quite thin plastic and seems flimsy on first inspection, but it has held up fine to daily use. It is perfect for teaching regrouping and my daughter can now do significantly more difficult problems with it. She absolutely loves it and chooses to do all her math work, no matter how simple, with it. I think it will last plenty long enough to serve its purpose.

Flimsy is the word . Bought this for my son but am returning it without opening the clear plastic wrapper. It's very flimsy and will look for one with wood beads and better construction. I did like that 5 are one color, 5 are the other on this one vs 10 of the same color across the row but once I saw it in person I vote thumbs down.

Cons Review

Not as good as others . We have really enjoyed other Magic School Bus Science Kits but this one is a bust. The explanations are too technical for the intended audience (5-7) and most of the experiments are done with items from your home, not from the kit. The water-absorbing polymers are interesting for a few minutes but don't pack a ton of educational value. Skip this kit and check out the human body or the germ kit instead.

Slime is fun . My granddaughter loved this kit. Lots of fun educational information about slime and polymers. It is a kit she will be able to use for many years to come since the polymers can be reused once they dry out. The rainbow beads and the snow were an a lot of fun. Just like the other kits in this series, it is a great buy. Lots of components and a fun colorful manual with instructions given by the characters of The Magic School Bus.

works for some kids . I knew when I purchased this toy for my 5 year old son that is was hard to read. Knowing his personality and what toys he has been attracted to, I bought it anyway. He loves it. It doesn't bother him at all that it's difficult to read. I think it's good because it makes him work harder and think more, the answer doesn't come quickly like in an electronic game. He quickly loses interest in electronic games, wouldn't tolerate flash cards so I'm glad that this alternative is available.

Just like I remember! . I remember these from my elementary school days and was really happy to find one while looking for something to use for my son's basic addition and subtraction fact drilling. I saw the twist and shout thing, but I didn't want to throw yet another noisy, battery operated toy at my children, especially for educational purposes. I'm so glad I went for the throw back! Yes, the answers are a little hard to see behind the opaque buttons, but if used in a brightly lit room the numbers become perfectly clear. A little "problem solving," if you could even call it that, and you're good to go. My kids were very excited about this, especially when I told them I used one when I was little, and I had to referee which child could hold it to avoid fighting!

Math made easy . This product was just how I remembered it when I used it 30 years ago. Yes the answers are hard to see until you press down real hard. But that is how it was 30 years ago and I did not expect anything different. I would recommend this product to anyone trying to teach their kids addition and subtraction.My children look at it like a computer and love playing with it. It gives them instant answers when they press down and they like that satisfaction.

Great learning toy! . Bought this for my niece, as I had one similar as a child and she loves it as much as I did! It's a fun way to learn addition and subtraction!

Plus-Minus Chart Toy . Big problem... the answers are not printed on the key above. They are underneath the key, so that when you depress it, you can see through. The problem is the numbers on top are over the number underneath in many cases, which makes the answer harder to see. I really prefer the ones where you can clearly see the answer print above.

Useless . I was so excited to receive this to help my 5 year old with her addition and subtraction. You are supposed to press on the button and "magically" the correct answer appears.

No magic here! The answers are simply underneath and as you push, the correct answers underneath are supposed to become more transparent or visible (similar to using tracing paper and placing it over something you want to trace. The closer the tracing paper is to the image you want to copy, the more clearly you can see it.) Well, neither my daughter nor I could even make out what the answers were. How are we supposed to read THROUGH a plastic button? It made no sense.

This was really a disappointment and such a waste!

Exactly like the one I had as a kid! . This is exactly like one I had as a kid. There are no electronics to break or wear out. Some of the reviews said they couldn't see the numbers... yes, you can. The numbers don't light up, but they are there and little fingers and eyes have no problem seeing the digits. My kids (ages 3,5,7,7&9) have a wii, but we try not to get then every little fad learning game that comes along. These are great for them to learn number patterns and how the equations are related. I would recommend this toy to any one whose kids don't need the latest and greatest to be entertained!

Very Cool . Gave this to my 9 year old daughter for xmas - she stopped opening presents so she could put it together! She loves it and takes it apart and puts it back together because she is fascinated by the anatomy of the frog. Super cool. And her little sister (age 7) got the shark. I would recommend this puzzle to any one who wants to get a kid excited about biology and anatomy.

Good model . This model was a good alternative to dissection for my 12 year old girl (homeschool zoology). Looks good, anatomically correct, sturdy, reasonably well built. Takes some dexterity to put together, but wasn't a problem for her. Materials that came with it were good, including basics of major organs, plus a great labeled diagram of a frog skeleton. The "Uncover a Frog" book was a good companion to the model.

HArd to get together and doesn't stay . If you want this for a one to two time use...perfect. If you want to be able to put together and set on counter if it gets bumped etc. it falls apart. My daughter became frustrated because she couldn't close it once she put all the peices together. She had to leave one out to get it to close and then the leg and arms kept falling off. If you want to treat it like a mister potato head toy this is cool and fun.

Cool and cute! . The dolphin was such a hit, that I had to get the frog too. Already had the Uncover a Frog book. Great companion!Uncover a Frog (Uncover Books)

Fine Motor Fun! . As an Occupational Therapist, I use this toy frequently to teach dressing skills to the children with whom I work. They have so much fun piecing the snake together that they forget they are learning to manipulate fasteners in the process. The head of the snake is a hand puppet, and the soft, colorful body pieces are both large and durable, making them easier to manipulate. My elementary school-aged children of all ages request "Snakey" again and again. This educational toy is definetly worth the money!

Fabulous toy questionable durability . We purchased this toy for my daughter for her birthday and she adores it. He is a wonderful teaching tool as well as being loads of fun as a puppet, however I have had to sew the seams back together in various places within days of purchase. Great item just not the most durable.

poorly constucted . I purchased this for my grandson who is mildly autistic. The idea was he could learn how to snap. button, zip, etc as he was a bit behind in these basic skills. He loved it when I gave it to him. The puppet head was so much fun. I used the puppet head to "bite" him and he giggled, then tried to "bite" everyone attending his birthday party. Sadly, Snaky began falling apart almost immediately. My daughter contacted the manufacturer and they asked her to send snaky to them to see what was happening.It took awhile before we got him back. I'm not sure if he really helped Rob out all that much as he wasn't able to play with him much.

Not durable at all, not worth the money, a big disappointment.

A great way to practice fasteners! . I work as an OT in the school systems. My students often are working on clothing fasteners...usually rather dreary practice. Snakey has been a huge hit, as he can take himself apart, scatter his pieces, and still keep on talking with the students. They have so much fun finding his pieces, and reattaching the puppet. It makes the fastener practice a highlight of the session for many kids.
