Excellent little portable telescope . I purchased this scope when, after being out of the hobby of astronomy (more or less) for 20 years, I was bitten by the bug and got back in. I was looking for a telescope that was portable and had a goto ability. This little scope delivers. If you're looking for a scope that will deliver Hubble like views, you're not going to find it here (or in any amateur instrument). However, since June this scope has showed me eclipses on Jupiter by one if it's satellites (Io), one of the rare(of late) sunspot groups on the sun (using a solar filter I purchased elsewhere), Jupiter - Uranus - Neptune - Venus all in the same night. Beautiful star clusters, colorful double stars, a few galaxies (albeit, the galaxies were just faint smudges of light) and quite a few nebulae. If you're already familiar with using a binoculars for your astronomical viewing, think of this as one half of a giant binocular...the views will be similar, but with the added bonus of being able to increase the magnification by changing eyepieces.

If you do purchase this scope, I highly recommend that you also purchase the Meade 6.4mm eyepiece...this will offer greater magnification for viewing the moon and planets and for splitting very close double stars. For clusters and nebulae the included eyepieces are just fine (I use the 9.7 the most).

Is the scope perfect? No...the focus mechanism takes a little practice to get used to and requires too many turns to refocus when using the barlow. Also, the batteries don't last as long as Meade claims (figure about 5 - 10 hours of use). However, this scope is an excellent bargain...very good optics, highly portable, and a goto system that makes it easy to find your targets in light polluted skies or when time is short and you need to make the most of it. Highly recommended.

ETX-80AT Astro Telescope w/ Tripod & Autostar Controller in USA -

Explore the Galaxies far away, or the wildlife in this one, all at the touch of a button, with this fantastically priced, all-inclusive telescope.

Now even the most novice of amateur astronomers can locate and explore the planets, asteroids, and comets, as well as nebulae, star clusters, galaxies, and hundreds of other deep-space objects, all at the push of a button with the included Autostar Hand Controller. The Meade ETX-80AT Astro Telescope brings the full range of celestial images to your eye with an astonishing level of clarity and resolution. And, carrying on Meade's incredible ETX tradition of optical and mechanical excellence, the 70mm ETX includes many of the same features as their larger ETX telescopes, and is 36 percent brighter than the ETX-60AT.

For the introductory student of astronomy, or for the casual observer, the Meade ETX-80AT opens up the skies at modest cost to an amazing breadth of celestial detail utterly invisible without the telescope.

For the non-celestial inclined, the Meade ETX telescopes make excellent land-view instruments for the birdwatcher, the naturalist, or for the home with a view as well. ETX image quality and resolution typically far exceed the levels normally expected of terrestrial telescopes. Terrestrial observers quickly appreciate the advantages afforded by the Autostar hand controller, notwithstanding the Autostar's primary applications to astronomical observing. Using Autostar, many land objects can be readily followed, or tracked, from a distance, using one of nine selectable speeds from slow to fast .

Sky & Telescope Magazine calls the Autostar Hand Controller "the greatest happening in amateur astronomy yet." For all of Meade's advanced imaging capabilities, portability, ease of use, and contemporary cosmetic design, Meade ETX telescopes are above all uniquely defined by the revolutionary Autostar hand controller. This great device is included as standard equipment with ETX 70mm Telescope. The 4

ETX-80AT Astro Telescope w/ Tripod & Autostar Controller Reviews
Great multi-use scope! . I purchased this for my science teacher wife. She was thrilled. It is of exceptional quality and durability. Very compact and the fact that it can be used for both astronomical and terrestrial purposes is a big plus. The tripod is of good quality and light weight. Even so it seems quite sturdy. I would highly recommend a 5-10 lb weight suspended from the scope mount center. It will make images far more stable. If you have difficulty picking out night-sky objects the Autostar can be a big help in getting started. This is not a deep sky scope, more for lunar and planetary observations, bird watching and spying on neighbors (reviewer's note: the last is a joke...honest!).
ETX-80AT Astro Telescope w/ Tripod & Autostar Controller Opinions
A wonderful Telescope . This telescope is great for beginners entering the world of astronmy! It has a suceficent amount of power to see many great cestial bodies in the sky. I saw highly detailed craters of the moon and the craters of mars. The autostar controller guides you and can give a tour of the night sky for those wondering what to see in the sky . It also works with a camera to take pictures on land or sky.
Great Begginers Scope . When I purchased this telescope I didn't know what to expect. I thought that you take the telescope outside, punch in what object you what it to go to, and it moves. No...you have to align it, which also means buying a star atlas. One thing you never want to forget to do is explain to your kids that this image won't be like the pictures you see. Overall, this is just a scopefor lunar and planetary viewing.
ETX 80AT . Very nice telescope for my 13 year old nephew, it's great for beginners.
The autostar can be a little confusing though.
Great telescope for amateur astronomer . I bought this telescope for my 9 years old niece but I really enjoy too this experience.PRO:
a)It's easy to understand how it's work (whith the manual of course).
b)The tripod is usefull and it's easy to install the telescope on it.
c)Autostar works great and guide you to see the objects at night
d)The eyepieces are great (Jupiter looks very well with his four moons, Saturn its so clear but little)
e)It's work to see trees, birds, and nature, great!CONS:
a) I find the alignment hard, there's no way (at least I don't know how) to put the coordinates of the place you are. I live in Honduras, Central America, I put the country in the autostar, but that information I think makes the alignment not exact. Advice: the alignment it's with too stars, it's important to know the constellations to facilitate the alignment. Alignment could be difficult but not big deal!Sorry for my english (I am spanish speaker)
Great starter telescope . Here's the skinny: the telescope was easy to assemble and learning the ropes was somewhat easy with the included DVD. After using it for about two weeks one of the gear mechanisms failed and I was forced to return it. The Autostar feature is cool and after aligning the scope, you can search the heavens for a boatload of objects in the sky. One evening I was able to get a clear view of Jupiter and some cloud bands. I also saw four of its moons (which looked liked four pinpoints next to the huge planet). That's pretty cool if you ask me.

All in all the telescope worked fine up until it stopped working.
Autostar lives up to its name... . The telescope comes well packed, important if it is being shipped to Australia. Importantly, the software knew about my obscure home town, so setting it up was a doddle.... The one starry night we have had, (it's winter here), presented stars as points without coma, and the scope knew where they were. This purchase had a dual purpose, to look at beach and islands opposite our beachside holiday home and to look at the sky at night. It wins on both accounts.
Great starter scope . This is my first telescope and I really love it. It is very easy to use. The tripod is nice and sturdy and the extra slots for eyepieces is helpful. Autostar (the included 'software') is really cool. This is not software you put on your computer but rather a computerized system attached to the scope for finding objects and orienting the scope. Autostar makes it possible to quickly move to your object of choice in the night sky. For further help with this - check out the computer software called Stellarium.

We have been mainly using the telescope as a spotting scope for birding and observing other wildlife. For really getting into the stars, you do probably need one of the magnifiers - we haven't gotten that yet. I have zero regrets with this purchase.
a gift . i gave this scope to my father for a gift. i researched this product and i was happy with my purchace.

Meade 16-Inch LX200-ACF (f/10) Advanced Coma-Free Telescope with EQ Pier

Meade 16-Inch LX200-ACF (f/10) Advanced Coma-Free Telescope with EQ Pier - Aperture: 16-Inch. Focal Length: 4064mm. Focal Ratio: f/10. Zero Image-Shift Microfocuser, 2-Inch Diagonal Mirror w/UHTC, 26mm Series 5000 5-Element Plössl Eyepiece, 18v AC Adapter. The most widely used research quality telescope now features the most advanced optical system. Meade’s LX200-ACF brings Advanced Coma-Free (ACF) optics within reach of aspiring astronomers everywhere. Nearly every observatory reflector in the world uses an aplanatic (coma-free) optical system like the Ritchey-Chrétien (RC), including NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Now you can own similar optics to what the professionals use. The LX200-ACF includes all the field-proven features of the LX200 including GPS, Primary Mirror Lock, Oversized Primary Mirror, SmartDrive; Smart Mount, AutoStar II and more. The new LX200-ACF. It’s the biggest news in astronomy since, well, the LX200.The “advanced” in Advanced Coma-Free. A traditional Ritchey-Chrétien (RC) is a type of reflector that delivers a coma-free, flat field of view via hyperbolic primary and secondary mirrors. Because the mirrors in these telescopes have always been very expensive to make, few amateur astronomers could enjoy them. Fortunately, Meade engineers developed a radical new Advanced Coma Free design by combining a hyperbolic secondary mirror with a corrector-lens-and-spherical-primary-mirror combination that performs as one hyperbolic element. This ACF design produces a coma-free, flat field of view that rivals traditional RC telescopes at a fraction of the cost. The design even eliminates diffraction spikes and improves astigmatism, both of which are inherent in the traditional RC design. When reviewing Meade’s LX200-ACF Advanced Coma Free, Sky and Telescope magazine said, “ [It] does indeed perform like a [Ritchey-Chrétien]. The difference between the off-axis images (compared to a Schmidt-Cassegrain) was dramatic to say the least.”

Penn State Observatory . This telescope is in use at the Penn States Wilkes Barre campus observatory. While the cost makes it out of reach for most people it is an absolutely amazing piece of gear. Very thankful to be able to use something of this caliber.

TE2) ETX-80AT W/AUTOSTAR & TRIPOD

This review is from : Meade ETX60AT Telescope (Obsolete)
A beginner scope that is superior to a dept. store "bargain" . This is striclty a beginner scope, but is the best of the beginner scope choices. It is highly portable, and easy to use. Some advice: When you buy the scope, also buy the Book - "The Backyard Astronomers Guide" by Terence Dickinson. In fact, if you are unsure about your interest in the hobby, buy the book first. If you think this is the beginning of a life-long hobby, consider the 90mm version of the ETX. While more expensive, it will never be outgrown. Also, don't buy too many accessories (i.e. additional eyepieces) until you have used the equipment for a while and are familiar with its operation and how you plan to use it. Meade makes very high quality products, and this product will last a lifetime.
Meade ETX60AT Telescope (Obsolete) Reviews
A neat scope- but for low magnifications only . This is a cute little scope, and certainly the smallest automated observatory available. But be forwarned: That short-focus 60mm scope is not in the same league as Meade's similar-looking ETX-90,or even most 60mm refractors. The short focal length means that trying to use magnifications much over 40x-50x will result in severe color fringing. It's a fine little package for viewing many deep sky objects, comets, and for low magnifications of the moon. You can count the moons of Jupiter and Saturn with it, but don't expect Hubble-like views of the planets, most of which will appear as small dots.If you understand the limitations of this scope, you'll enjoy it. If you're looking for more detailed planetary views, or in exploring a great number of deep sky objects, look to a larger scope.
Meade ETX60AT Telescope (Obsolete) Opinions
A great all-around telescope . I have had the opportunity to use the Meade ETX-60AT on several nights and find it to be a great telescope for the beginner or casual observer. Its low power fields make it easy to locate objects both astronomical and terrestrial. When higher powers are needed (I have used up to 140X), the telescope provides crisp clear detailed images of the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn with its beautiful rings. The advantages of the Autostar computer controller for the beginner cannot be over stated. With no knowledge of the sky, a child or curious adult can find hundreds of astronomical wonders with just the push of a button. The telescope actually moves on its own to find the selected objects and centers them in the eyepiece. It is possible to find less expensive old-technology telescopes, but they will likely be used a few times to look at the Moon and maybe Saturn and then put away in a closet after the novice user becomes frustrated at not being able to find any other objects such as the star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae that are within the reach of a telescope of this size. A person using the ETX-60AT telescope can see many more celestial objects in one evening than most people will ever see in a lifetime. I have been involved with amateur astronomy for over 30 years and I can tell you, this telescope is the best way to introduce the treasures of the night sky to anyone interested in what the cosmos has to offer. I have purchased 2 of the ETX-60ATs for non-astronomical friends and they love them.
A Great Little Scope . I've seen alot of negative reviews on this telescope and all I can say is: I absolutly love it. True, it isn't the best telescope as far as observing deep sky objects or even some of the planets. But it isn't usless as some claim. I have been an amatuer astronomer for well over 25 years and have uses a variety of telescopes. Yes, through some scopes the details of planets are better and can see galaxies and nebula more clearly, but this is my favorite telescope so far (until I can afford a bigger one). First of all, the telestar systems works well. Once you set it up, it guides the telescope to whatever you punch in. sometimes, it get's off, but it is almost always because of user error or low batteris. I have seen things in the night sky I had never seen before for the simple reason because i couldn't find it--I've always had trouble with using degrees, seconds, and minutes. So it was well worth the price for the scope. True, if you're used to using bigger scopes, then no, this scope isn't for you. But if you are new to astronmy or you are thinking of buying a telescope for the kids, then have no reservations on getting this telescope. I've seen quite a bit with mine. I've seen the snow caps on Mars and a little detail of the planets surface, the rings of Saturn, Jupiter looks great and you can see a few of the planet's band of clouds. I even saw Uranus, although basically all I saw was a bluish/green "star". And of course the Moon. The Moon is fantastic through the eyepiece of the 60mm ETX. Viewing nebula is where this scope has trouble, though. However, most people starting out want to see the moon and planets anyway. Besides, no amatuer scope shows the detail and size that we are accustomed to seeing in books and magazines. So, I can't see why everyone is downing the telescope. For a small, cheap scope, nothing beats it. Yes, for the money, you could by a better scope that will let you see more detail, but good luck in finding something to look at. The ETX 60mm gives you the capability to find objects with just a press of a button, if you're new to astronomy, or buying one for your kids, do you want to have to search tediously for the Andromeda Galaxy, or a comet. Or, would you rather press a button and have the scope do the work for you? The ETX 60mm is worth the price.
My five-year-old loves it. . I purchased this "beginners" telescope for my five-year-old son for Christmas and he and I have truly enjoyed it. All features work as advertised. The telescope must first be "aligned" by pointing it due north, setting the date and time, and then centering two stars it rotates to in the eyepiece. Once this is done the telescope finds anything an amateur astronomer could hope for automatically. The images of planets are not large. Saturn and its rings are visible, but still quite small with the delivered eyepieces. I plan to purchase the 3x Barlow lens and the 6mm eye piece to increase magnification up to 175x. This telescope is rated at a maximum of 200x magnification. The only reason I did not rate this item 5 stars is due to my mild disappointment in the delivered magnification.
the best money I have spent and the many $$$$ i spent later. . I got this telescope for no particular reason. I had no interest in Astronomy or any thing closely related to star gazing. My back-ground is banking and investments. However, I bought it to start a new hobby. Low and behold, My free time began to disappeared and i was a full-fledge convert of the star-gazing cult. to make it simple it is a great gadget to pull your leg but no a particularly good piece. The software that comes with it is exceptional and indispensable.
Meade ETX-60AT . This is a great telescope! I love the autostar finder. I would recomend this to new astronomers and old pro's alike!
Wish I Could Rate It ~ Blue Shark Never Sent It . I would have loved to review this telescope. Ordered it from Blue Shark. After repeated promises, he just kept my money and never sent the telescope. When I hopefully soon receive from another seller, I will have the opportunity to review.

Cons Review
A darn expensive finder/spotting scope . After intensely looking through an acquaintance's Meade ETX-60AT several times, I walked away perplexed. What niche is Meade trying to fill with this scope? One would expect such a small scope to be optimized for planetary viewing- as viewing of the deep sky (star clusters, galaxies, nebulae) is definitely not its strength. However, presumably because of the difficulties inherent in the manufacture of low focal ratio telescopes, the optical quality is too low to give decent views of the moon and planets. What's its current average price, the scope is much less a value than the more useful ETX-90. While there is a market for good, high quality optics of this aperture, this scope doesn't serve it.Views of the moon were muddy and indistinct compared to even the ETX-90- which is not the best scope in the world. Views of stars and star clusters (the aperture is too small to pull in any galaxies, except M31, or nebulae except M42) reminded me of those though my own finder scope, which I had bought for next to nothing at a swap meet. The GOTO system is positively worthless. Almost anything that one would possibly want to look for in this scope would be easily visible to the naked eye, and thus easily pointed at, or too faint to be interesting to the beginner. If the only scope you've ever looked through is a Tasco refractor (a "department store" telescope) the ETX-60AT will be a revelation. However, once you've looked through even the most modest Dobsonian telescope, the views through this scope will seem weak and disappointing.Instead, if you're looking for a relaxing and fun way to sweep the Milky Way, buy a pair of 10x50 (or 7x50) binoculars for 1/4th the price. With them, you'll actually be getting 40 percent more light, you'll be able to use both eyes, and you won't have to fumble with a cumbersome GOTO system to find stuff (there is no finder becasue the lowest power of the scope is about 13, which allows the scope itself to be clumsily used as one.).One interesting feature this scope posseses is the ability to flip a mirror and go from a upside down "astronomical" scope, to a spotting scope with an upright image. If you're looking for a spoting scope for birding, archery, hunting or spying on that cute thing down the beach, you can make do with something simpler (and much less heavy on the wallet) such as the Bushnell 78-1545- which, while not an optical powerhouse itself, will serve those purposes nicely.
It struck me with awe at first then with ugh... . After several hundred dollars, I've discovered that this telescope is pretty much useless. An avid star gazer, I would have been better off purchasing the cheapest model at the local department store. I was sold on the idea of the "auto finder" but after reading the instructions and following them. The auto tracker still does not prove worthy. What a piece of junk. The nice thing about it is you can see the moon - oh...and it looks like a really cool telescope....ugh!

Astronomy Made Easy . When the ETX-90PE works, it works very well and makes astronmomy an easy hobby to get into. Let me elaborate.

First, the best telescope is the one you use most often. All too frequently people buy big telescopes that are heavy to carry, and that need frequent adjustment. The little ETX weighs less than 20 lbs all set up (including tripod), and never needs adjustment. It encourages frequent use.

Second, one of the most challenging aspects of astronomy, especially for the newcomer, is finding objects to look at. If you are not familiar with the night sky and where things are located, it can get very frustrating spending up to 30 minutes just to find one object to look at! The ETX's built in computer makes finding objects easy - just select what you want to see from a menu, and the scope will automatically point to it.

The optical quality of the ETX is excellent. The manufacturer, Meade, does a very good job of turning out optical systems that rank with the best. Some of the most rewarding objects - the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Orion Nebula look wonderful through this telescope.

One final positive to mention is the ease of setup. The PE models are the easiest of all telescope to get up and running. Just turn on the power, press one key on the hand held computer controller, and in a few moments the telescope will start aligning itself so that it will automtically find objects for you. You don't need to worry about where north is, or what the current date, time, and location are.

Now some cautions. First, the ETX-90 is a small telescope, and will not show as much as a larger one. That is the trade-off with getting a portable instrument. There are larger ETX models that are almost as portable, so these might be a consideration. Also, understand that there will be a learning curve when using the built in computer. It's not hard, but you need to have some patience while you learn the procedure. Finally, be prepared for some quality control issues. As good as the optics are, some ETX's have some mechanical problems that require a return to the factory for warranty repair. My own ETX-90PE had to go back to the factory twice. But once all the problems were fixed, it was well worth it! On this note, you can purchase an extended warranty from the manufacturer at a reasonable price, and I would recommend doing so.
SO) MEADE ETX-90PE W/UHTC Reviews
A nice starter piece with great potential . I purchased this as my (our) first telescope. I have three children ranging from age 14 to 4, this was a gift for the summer and it's turned out really well.

The product itself is truly nice, works great for viewing the stars plus...

My biggest complaint now comes with the whole star drive system (AutoStar). The alignment process will take you first time around, about 1/2 an hour or so just to familiarize yourself with all the components (READ THE MANUAL). This is NOT an open the box and go system, so don't expect to put the pieces together and just begin. This system is more of a mid-range system, certainly not for those who have years of experience viewing the solar system and stars.

The drive functions are interesting. There is always the realignment process, since you are never really looking from the same spot each time. So configure it once, configure it twice and keep right on going per use. Might have been better to build in compass with alignment points.... or...

Viewing is incredible, clear, crisp and detailed. I am throughly impressed with the optics.

As I previously stated, a nice starter system for a family to begin viewing. However, I have already begun looking are far more sophisticated products and with my experiences in hand will find a system somewhat more expensive but with the features I believe would be more useful.
Super price for Meade ETX-90PE Telescope . Work super and you see Jupiter, Saturn, Venus and Moon and more, is best telescope for make photos.
SO) MEADE ETX-90PE W/UHTC Opinions
Christmas gift unable to review yet. . Because I am giving this gift as a Christmas present, which won't even be opened for another three weeks, I am unable to review this item. However, if I didn't believe that this product and vendor would give satisfactory service, I would not have ordered it online at all. So it's gotta be good, right?

Cons Review
Lemon by Meade . My new ETX90 PE did not work (it would ALMOST "go to"); I sent it to Meade. Meade returned it to me; still bad. They sent me (exchange)another EXT90 PE; it had the same problem. They sent me a third (exchange); it failed in the initial start up. I sent it back and have not heard from them since.

Now they have my scope & I have a tripod and some assessories, but at least I don't have that frustrating piece of (OK, clean it up, Ed) that Meade seems unable to fix.

Meade Customer Service . I am most disappointed with Meade customer service. The scope malfunctioned within the warranty period. I spoke to Meade and was informed I'd have to wait 30 days before I could ship them the scope for repair. They said they would send a box and a UPS shipping label. I waited another two weeks after that. I called Meade again and was told the Meade customer service rep I spoke to had left the company. No one ever picked up the handling of my repair or called or emailed me. Had I not called Meade again, I would still be waiting for them to contact me. My scope has now been unusable for over two and a half months and Meade now tells me they don't currently have any boxes in stock to send me so I can ship them the scope for repair. Their customer service stinks. Had I known what a slipshod service department they had I would have bought a Celestron scope instead of the Meade. I expect I might have my scope back before the end of the year, as there is no way to tell how long it will take them to repair the scope and ship it back. this is NOT the way a company the size of Meade should work. They need to seriously revamp their entire customer service system.
