Endless Combinations of Fun and Learning . I purchased these weighted numbers for my grandchildren in conjunction with the pan balance. It is a perfect learning toy for a toddler that grows w him/her. There are multiple uses for the weighted numbers... if you purchase a second set the child can be introduced to number recognition by tangibly finding the matching number or placing like numbers on opposite sides of the balance scale to see if they are even and match! As their skills grow the child can do number combinations i.e. 4 and 3 for 7. An art project can also be incorporated by tracing the numbers with a pencil. The uses are limited only by your imagination.

My sons love it! . I bought two - one for my 10 year old son and the other for my 5 year old son. My first son built it pretty much all by himself except for a couple of steps. The user guide is very good. Take your time and follow the steps carefully. Make sure to deburr the wheels. Otherwise it does not work.

May be that was the problem with one of the buyers who could not get it to work.

Start putting it together when you have enough sun light. Before you put on the wheels, check it out in the sun to make sure it works. Then put the wheels, check again. If it does not work - deburr the wheels. That's what happened to one of our kits.

Fun to assemble...but it doesn't work . My 8 year old son and I had fun building the robot (although, as another reviewer noted, it is A LOT smaller than you expect it to be), but we've had it in the sun for hours and it won't budge. I'm afraid the solar mechanism isn't up to snuff. Another downside is that there's no on/off switch; if it eventually does power up, it will just run in the sun and not in the shade. No power is stored. Overall, a big letdown. Will write the company to see whether a replacement solar panel eases the pain, a bit.

so so product . It is not very difficult to assemble and make it work. Son enjoy it for a while. But the assembled product not very stable and parts can become loose easily.

Smaller than thought! . I guess the dimensions of the product were for the box. This is a tiny guy. My husband and 3 yrs old put it together. It hasn't moved yet but we havn't had sunshine yet....

Hard to build and doesn't budge . My 8 year old purchased this for himself with an Amazon birthday gift card. I had to build the whole thing, which we were expecting since it is rated for 10 and up. It took me 3 hours to assemble this toy for my son. He used sandpaper to sand off the burrs and helped when he could. One rotating part needed additional sanding on one of the rotating pivots which seemed to be slightly misshapen. Finally after 3 hours of building, we placed it in the sun and even used a magnifying glass to intensify the sun. (This is a technique we have used to make other solar toys move.) It will not budge. My son is very disappointed an wants his money back. If anyone has any tips on how to make this work, we're open. I have considered spraying the moving parts with Silicone spray to reduce the friction.

Christmas disappointment . I will begin this review by saying I have not attempted to put this toy together. I'm hoping to be able to return it. I did NOT buy it through Amazon, but wish I had. I bought it through Steve Spangler Science. When it arrived I googled the product to see other comments and there were none, so here's mine

The trouble with mail order or internet purchases of such toys is that all you have to go on is the picture and description. The actual product in this case is much smaller than it appears in the graphic. The pieces are the kind all afixed to a framework you need to twist off. There are 20 some very small pieces plus 4 gears and screws and rubber feet. The instruction booklet is 26 pages of detailed drawings that look absolutely impossible to follow. If someone could actually follow these directions I have serious doubts that it would actually work as a solar robot. But I'm not even going to try.

Sorry...it's a piece of junk . Just got this for my 10 year old for 2011 xmas. Parts were very small and very difficult to assemble. Together we assembled about half of the robot until we came across a defective part (The molding of part B19 had a broken core pin that made assembly impossible) We then took it apart and tried the solar panel. Again, a big dissappointment. Absolutely nothing happened.If you've already made the mistake of buying this toy, try the solar panel first before you waste any more time with assembly.The better choice is to not purchase this POS at all.

Astro Lab Planetarium . Hi,
I was expecting the planets to move electronically. But all in all I was pleased with the set-up. It was bought for a Christmas present for my 7 year old grand daughter.
Also I liked the star displays it projected to the ceiling, but to get the whole picture the planetarium would have to be in the center of the room. This is not a possibility in her small room.

Cons Review

No Interaction . I too thought that the planets would revolve around the sun...but they do not revolve automatically. The other review is also correct in that it really needs to be placed in the middle of the room for the star viewing. Basically this is a toy that takes up a conciderable amount of space on a shelf. There is a booklet that goes with it and tells a little about each planet. But it is not something that I would call "fun". My daughter loves science, but this toy just didn't draw her attention.

Oh, and the little balls just sit loosely on the wires. One of them fell off and I can't find it. I tried to call the phone number in the booklet...but it says that number is no longer in service??? Does anyone have a phone number that works? Please post it if you do. Thanks.

Interesting...for 5 minutes . Bought this for my 8-year old who has a keen interest in stars and planets, it was fun but difficult for a child to put together and fun/interesting to look at and play with for 5 minutes but after that, the interest is seriously limited. Not sure I'd recommend it.

Finally a diary for boys! . Our son has been asking for a diary for a long time. We looked at toy stores, at book stores and at his school book fair. Every one we found was pink and sparkly, or had girl themed covers. On a whim I searched Amazon and found this diary.

It came this week and our son was thrilled and surprised. I showed him how to use the little lock and where "we" will hide the keys. He ran off right away to write in it.

The book itself is well made - a hardback type cover with lined pages inside. The binding is nice - no pages trying to escape. The obvious attraction for kids will be the "keep out" and "do not enter" signs on the front. The lock is a little junky, like the other reviewer said, but that isn't a big deal for us. If it breaks, we'll just buy him a small lock to replace it. For this price I don't expect to find a high dollar lock on the diary.

The price of $9.99 plus free SuperSaver shipping (for orders over $25) made this a good deal. Especially if you've been unable to find a boy-themed diary locally.

The padlock is a joke. . My son was so excited to buy this journal with his own money and it came at great disappointment. Although the journal itself is cute and appears well made, the padlock was AWFUL. The padlock was broken within 10 minutes of using it with the key. It appeared very flimsy and the lock stripped easily. And of course, this happened when the journal was closed and locked, so there was no way to use it that evening. Thank goodness for our local hardware store who cut the lock off for free and we bought another sound lock. Don't waste your money on this unless you are prepared to purchase a lock that lasts.

Great Volcano for the money . My 4 year old son is obsessed with volcanoes and asked for this for a year every time he saw it in a magazine. He loved building it with his dad and watching it erupt over and over. We are not sure where to store it, since it is a bit big. But, other than that we were very happy with it.

Okay for an excited volcano lover - Disappointing quality . My six year old loves anything dinosaur or volcano related and was very excited to receive this as a gift from Santa. We were very excited to start the project and it is simple to put together. As another reviewer noted you will need to roll the paperboard form for the volcano in order to eliminate/minimize sharp corners as it was folded in the box. It became clear quickly that there would not be enough plaster gauze to overlap the pieces. Thus, the result is an unsturdy volcano - not the end of the world but not expected either. If I were purchasing the product again I would consider trimming the bottom of the paperboard form a few inches - it will still be plenty big and should allow you to overlap the gauze. Alternatively, you could purchase additional plaster gauze at a craft store. There was also just barely enough brown paint to cover the volcano. All in all my son was happy - he made a volcano and it erupted. For the price it isn't too bad as a winter afternoon of entertainment. However, I would not purchase this product again. I have saved the form and will purchase gauze and paint so we can repeat the project again in the future, hopefully with a better volcano.

Cons Review

Cheap components and barely enough of them. Make your own! . My son received this as a birthday present and LOVED it. I however, did not love it quite as much, because it takes more than a colorful box and a good idea to impress a Mom.

First of all, it's not at all sturdy. The volcano is made from a piece of semicircular posterboard that you are supposed to tape together to form a large cone. Problem is, the posterboard is folded to fit in the box, so it has flat sides and fold lines. So you have to roll it, tape it, and fudge it to make it go into a cone shape rather than a pyramid shape. Of course, I'm the one who had to do that, so I was pretty irritated.

Secondly, they are cheap and stingy with the plaster. They include barely enough plaster strips to cover your cone/pyramid. If you let your kids do this on their own, and they overlap their plaster strips AT ALL, they will run out of strips before the whole thing is covered. So if you do waste your money on this kit, you'd better be willing to supervise closely to make sure you don't waste any plaster too.

Thirdly, ditto my last point on the paint. There is barely enough to go around. There isn't any extra for your kids to experiment, make a mistake and fix it, etc.

Fourthly, this thing is made of cheap paper, plaster, and cheap paint. There is no shellac or protectant. There's only so many times you can let vinegar/baking soda fizz all over this thing before it falls apart.

In sum, if you have a big fan of volcanoes at your house, and he/she is pretty young, this kit will probably be a hit. The idea is great and it does, after all, end up producing a brown and red plaster-covered cone with a plastic cup in the top, and that's all most kids need. But you could also make your own for much less money, and get enough paint and plaster that you don't have to hover over the project to make sure it works.

Works great over and over . My 4 yr old niece really liked this. She used it over and over (w/Dad's help) until it was battered and worn. One could do as much educational instruction as they wanted, varying the viscosity of the lava flow and/or altering the shape.

fun . I bought this for one of my grandsons when he was in kindergarten. We erupted that volcano more times than I can remember. He loved it.It was a great activity to do together, and it looked just like the picture.

sodium polyacrylate . This is a great toy. It is fun to watch the powder expand as it absorbs water, amd it does feel sort of like snow, although it is very different. The only problem is that you can get the same stuff out of a baby diaper for a tenth of the price.

Really cool . I got this last year for my kids at that time ages 3 & 7, both boys. This stuff is awesome! We waited until after it rained and went into the alley and poured just a tiny bit into puddles which then expanded a ton. We were all amazed at how little it took to produce a large amount of fluff. Do watch the little ones with it though...my 3 year old didn't know how to control the flow very well and ended up pouring over 1/2 of the tube into a puddle at once so we ran out faster than I had hoped for. I think it was worth the money and it was a good, fun time spent with my kids.

Nice afternoon activity. . My 4 yr old loved filling the dish up, dumping a cap full of powder in, and watching it expand. We were able to repeat about 15-20 times. He enjoyed it every time.

The end product feels slightly cool due to the moisture. It does not stick together at all. We have not put it in the freezer, so it may still be possible. Overall, it was a lot of fun since we don't get real snow here in Florida.

*UPDATE* After the 4th time using the snow, it is unusable. It no longer absorbs the water well and does not grow to become fluffy. However, I still feel like we got our four dollars worth out of it and would buy it again.

A fine potato clock...if you know how! . Ah, the mysterious potato clock, a wonderous piece of science. A nice little kit only missing potatoes--and accurate instructions. We opened the package and found three wires, four metal strips, a base with clock, and directions. Oddly, the directions said nothing about the metal strips--just connect the wires to the potatoes and you are off. Funny thing, nothing happened. My daughter tried this with a sitter and they decided the potatoes were defective, so we came home to discover several pieces of fruit had been victims of mad science experiments gone awry.

If you know a little electrochemistry, you might be suspicious, and rightfully so. Those metal strips are not decorations. What you should do is:
1) put potatoes on base
2) put silver strips into the left side of each potato (as you face the clock from the front).
3) put the copper strips into the potato on the right side (you don't want the strips to cross or touch)
4) connect the red wire to the left potato's silver strip and to the lefthand terminal at the left of the clock (marked "-")
5) connect the blue wire from the left potato copper strip to the right potato's silver strip
6) connect the black wire from the right potato's copper strip to the right terminal (marked "+"). Your clock should come alive at this point and the directions do seem correct on how to set the clock.

Connecting the wires may be mildly troublesome. I think you can get a good contact by pulling the wire into the notch on the side of the end of the metal strips, but I decided to strip the insulation from the wires first. The springs on the terminals are most easilly used by pushing the top to the side and sliding the bare wire into the spring, then letting the top go back to its original position.

Although cool to get going (once you learn the little trick above), beyond putting new pieces of fruit or tubers in place, you just have a kid conversation piece, so its "fun" level can get kind of low quickly. It is really not fun if you don't have better directions than what were in our box.

missing parts confusing directions . Received this as a gift from out of town family and it was still in it's original sealed packaging but we were missing some of the key ingredients to some of the very first experiments which was very disappointing for our 8 & 5 year olds who were eager to try it out. We were able to do some of the experiments, but found that the instructions didn't match up exactly with the labels on some of the ingredient packaging so it was a little confusing and frustrating for us, and good test of our children's patience. There were no illustrations in the directions to help verify what you're doing is correct, or that you have the correct parts, and/or ingredients. You may want to buy locally and open/inventory & review directions and parts before giving as a gift to your child or someone else, or buy through Amazon to insure easy return in either case.

Fun but Messy . We bought this for our 7 year old girl who loves science. We haven't done more than 3 experiments because she has had a blast with the gooey balls that grow in water. She has been drying them out and re-hydrating them for weeks. But is is VERY messy. If you are OCD about mess do not get this kit or just do it outside. The slime is difficult to clean up and you're not suppose to get it in your drains. The test tubes are high quality, very thick plastic. Ours have been dropped on the tile floor at least 5 times and not a crack.

Great!!! . So many things to do in this kit! The only downside is that some of the projects are too complicated and they also include powdered iron - which can be dangerous.

Big Bag of Science . We first saw this kit in the gift shop of the Fort Worth Museum of History which was too pricey. The price and value here was acceptable. The Big Bag of Science teaches kids in a hands-on way the what, how and why's of science. Would recommend others to buy for children.

Science disguised as fun! . My 11 year old loves these kits! Santa has brought one for the past 3 Xmas'. He said we should give it 4 - 4 1/2 stars out of five only b/c he is disappointed when he needs an adult's help to complete an experiment. Some of the experiments are quickly over, and can't be "recycled"/ repeated over and over, thus the fun is very short (but sweet). So try to buy this at a discounted rate in order to get your money's worth!

LOVE THIS AWESOME SCIENCE KIT! . We have already had so much fun and have learned so much from this kit. There are over 70 different activities. We have only done 9 of the activities and we have spent hours having fun with it already! It's not only really fun and interesting, but we have learned so much. My daughter now knows what super absorbent polymers are and what they are useful for. We've talked about mixing colors and how heat affects the speed at which tablets dissolve in water. She's also started learning how to use scientific instruments and take notes like a scientist. My goal is that she is not intimidated by science as she gets older...but has confidence to jump into it and enjoy it! I love this product and think it's a great deal for all that you get!This is the only time I have ever written a review...but I just wanted to share what a wonderful item this is!BTW- before having kids, I was a chemistry and physics teacher. :0)

entertaining and educational . We had alot of fun with this product. It was entertaining for both my son and I, and very educational as well.

Cons Review

Good product sloppy instructions make it frustrating . My daughter and I started the experiments from #1 and had a good time with 1-3. It would've helped to have an illustrated list of equipment, though, as I wasn't sure what some items called for were at first. #4 stopped us, though, as the instructions aren't clear. It begins saying "After the Coloring Tablets quit fizzing" even though the list of items called for on this equipment do not include the Coloring Tablets, so I'm not sure how that plays in. Then it asks you to "...pull the bag of Superabsorbent Crystals out of your Baby Soda Bottle." Umm, what is this "Baby Soda Bottle"? I can find the bag of crystals, I just can't find anything labeled as a "Baby Soda Bottle, nor is it listed in the 'From the Kit' item list." Then it asks you to pour crystals into the 2oz plastic cups... okay, fine... but the next line says something about them soaking up the water. What water? How much? As a science experiment, I shouldn't be guessing on measurements, I should have clearer direction to ensure the intended results. If you want to teach kids how to do science correctly, the kit itself needs to do it correctly.

Great Product . I like this product because it has the basic containers to use for other experiments. My son (8yrs) loved it. It is nice because there is a lot to do so it is good for many weekends of fun. The one draw back is you have to purchase items for some of the experiments. For the price I wish it would have some with everything. Over all I am very happy and my son loves it.

Great for budding scientist! . Just like the package says, it really does make over 70 experiments. Most ingredients come with the kit, but some, like 2L Coke, baking soda, etc can be picked up easily at the store. My son loves science and has really enjoyed doing this! Warning- some experiments can be messy, but so worth the fun!
