Love it! . Our son received this for Christmas 2010 and he absolutely loved it. He was 6.5 at the time but still talks about it a year later. It is a quality kit with very clear instructions in a full size full color book plus a half size one to record observations. I highly recommend this kit!

Cons Review

Not as good as others . We have really enjoyed other Magic School Bus Science Kits but this one is a bust. The explanations are too technical for the intended audience (5-7) and most of the experiments are done with items from your home, not from the kit. The water-absorbing polymers are interesting for a few minutes but don't pack a ton of educational value. Skip this kit and check out the human body or the germ kit instead.

Slime is fun . My granddaughter loved this kit. Lots of fun educational information about slime and polymers. It is a kit she will be able to use for many years to come since the polymers can be reused once they dry out. The rainbow beads and the snow were an a lot of fun. Just like the other kits in this series, it is a great buy. Lots of components and a fun colorful manual with instructions given by the characters of The Magic School Bus.

Less than exciting but still fun . I purchased this item for my 5-year old grandson who is VERY into volcanoes. He couldn't wait to make the lava flow.Alas, we were able to get just a small amount of lava to come up over the top of the test tube. Only a drop or two actually came down the side of the volcano. We tried three different times, following the instructions to the letter. Maybe my baking soda or vinegar were 'old'? Anyway, my grandson still enjoyed the gift and looked really cute with his safety goggles :)

Fun with Learning . We had a great time learning about volcanoes with this kit. My sons (6 and 2) really enjoyed the experiments and getting their hands on everything. The highlight was blowing the volcano up, of course.

Cons Review

Did not live up to expectations. . My 6 y/o son is currently fascinated with Volcanoes at school and it has become his #1 preferred school project subjects. I had purchased several kids Books and Magazines for him on Volcanoes but never an actual kit. Considering he enjoyed the Magic School Bus Volcano episode I figured this would be perfect for his first Volcano kit. Unfortunately this kit did not really live up to his expectations and he would get frustrated with this kit, although I do understand this kit has small print geared more towards adults for teaching children. I have not been able to work with him lately due to some business travel. My wife took up the chore of helping with the adult part but even then my wife had explained to me that this kit is about average on the adult friendly part and really below average on the child friendly part. This may seem confusing, but then that is the point since this kit is advertised as being geared towards 5 - 10 y/o children. So from re-reading the product description and taking in my wife's description of the actual product it does seem to me that they tried to get the best of both the adult and kids world here but came up short. I then ordered a simpler erupting volcano from another toy maker which my son enjoyed very much. Simplicity wins out again when trying to make a toy educational.

This was an instant hit . My kids love The Magic School Bus and this kit was a hit. Unlike other volcano kits on the market, the kids learned first all about volcanoes, lots of age-appropriate facts given by Liz the lizzard, and there is an easy parent guide. All the experiments worked and the kit even included a piece of pumice. Of course the exploding of the Volcano was the activity the kids were looking forward to, but they had to figure out the Magic Exploding solution themselves. Great educational kit and we can't wait to purchase more Magic School Bus kits.

This is pretty good! . This is a very fun kit. I have not used everything in it yet, but what I've used of it has been...interesting. I've learned that eggnog is slightly acidic - which is still confusing to me. Eggnog has none of the strong bitterness I associate with acidic beverages. Anyway, this is an awesome science kit(eggnog not included). I am highly satisfied with this purchase! I highly recommend this product to lovers of science!

Kids loved it! . I teach a small group of home schoolers aged 5-8 based on these kits and this kit was great! I loved hearing the "WOW's" from kids when we did some of these experiments (especially solar beads). I used 4 kits for 12 kids and they were able to share with few extras being purchased (from the grocery store). I combined it with the "Soaring Into Flight" kit for the semester. We did trivia on the last day and I was amazed at what their little minds absorbed!

The planets didn't stick to the play dough as well as expected, but we easily fixed that with toothpicks. Use very little water to paint the planets and glue your mobile if you want it to stay on the wires. This kit is very much worth the money even with these little bumps.

Magic School Bus Fun! . Awesome toy, but the clay that came in it was already dried out. So we are purchasing extra. Other than that, its great :)

Fun but flimsy . My 6-year old enjoyed the projects; however, the kit is pretty flimsy. The projects will last a week if we are lucky.

Not all that great . I had high hopes considering the name, but it fell short. It makes for a decent jumping off point, but the constellation project was a complete fail that served only to frustrate and there is a real lack of information and instruction overall. I wont be buying this name again.

Just okay . I was disappointed by the quality of this product. The first thing my son and I attempted to do was construct the solar system, but the paint was difficult to use on the styrofoam and the wire was hard to attach to the project. We tried another experiment with a flashlight and then something with identifying stars, which was nearly impossible. These were educational, but not enticing enough to keep his interest for more than a couple of hours. He gave it another attempt when he tried to assemble a telescope that did not want to cooperate. Nobody in our family was able to figure out the little cardboard telescope, there goes my husband's engineering career.

My nephew liked it! . I got this for my nephew who is interested in space and astronomy. He liked the hands on activities and I think he enjoyed learning a little more about the moon and the planets.

Not happy at all. . Bought for our daughter, we love the books and the video, but this "lab" is a major disappointment. Cheaply made with little educational value. It might be okay as a rainy day activity but not as a lesson for our homeschool.

good project for kid . Very educational product. You can't paint the provided foam globes to make different planets because paint doesn't stay on the globes.

NOT a complete "ready to go" set . A great product, a fantastic learning experience. The only dissapointment I had was that I sat down with my son, who was VERY excited to get started and upon reading directions there are several "common household items" needed. None of which I had. The box states on the front 3 complete kits. As I looked at the box, there is indeed in small writing on the back "will need some household items". I just wish I had known ahead of time so I could have been more prepared for my son.
However, I am very much looking forward to doing these experiements once I can manage to obtain these "common household items" which are not common in my household.

Does NOT include all necessary materials! . I am very disappointed in receiving this kit! Really all you get are the instructions for the experiments (easily enough found in a book or on the Internet) and a few supplies. For example for the volcano, included is 2 sheets construction paper, pumice, magnifying glass, black paint and paint brush. You need to supply newspaper, top of a shoebox, 2 1/2 liter plastic bottles, flour, water, vinegar, red food coloring, baking soda, liquid dish detergent and tape! I don't think this kit helps much in making the volcano!!! Doesn't seem worth $30 to me...

Young Scientist Kit . Doing science doesn't get any easier than this! As a homeschooling mom I was looking for a way to make science interesting and educational at the same time. This kit does both. It was also a tremendous help to have supplies included in the kit.

Just add....nothing. It's all there! . What a great kit! I wanted to introduce my young daughter to science because, as a young kid, I was so daunted by the subject (and still am).

This kit makes every experiment easy. All the items you need are included, so there is no disappointment like there can be with other kits (ie: the time we got an experiment all set up only to discover we needed to provide our own borax. What the heck is borax?!).

Just open your chosen project's pouch and go. And each experiment only takes a few minutes to set up, perform and clean up, so it won't take up your whole afternoon.

It's a little pricey for the actual components, but for the stress-free, educational experience I get to provide for my child, it's totally worth the price.

Science Kit . The kit is easy to use and the supplies needed to make and learn from your science project is included. There are many topics to choose from.

Fun educational little kit on electrity for the little ones . My son picked this out when we went to an author signing at the SoHo Scholastic store for the Magic School Bus series. He loves it!!! His favorite activities (which there are many) are the ones with the balloon. He loved watching my hair stand up on ends as he learned about positive charge. He also loved the activity making water jump and making cereal dance. He actually ran around the house looking for more object to make dance. The circuit board is not much, but does it's job and was not expected to be over the top for the age group and price range. So many activities that are fun and engaging to keep a young one's mind all aglow with curiosity.

Not entirely worth the money . The kit doesn't warn you you'll need quite a few extra supplies before starting, which seriously delayed the fun on Christmas morning. And the experiments are ones you can find pretty much anywhere online. My daughter had more fun creating her own experiments with the supplies provided than following the instructions. While I'm glad I purchased this to find out about it, I don't think I would purchase another of these kits.

Great kit ... but not great value for your money . My daughter (6) put this on her wishlist for Christmas and finally got it for her birthday. She loves it. It's educational and fun. But it is over priced. It's basically photocopied papers with a very cheap magnifying glass, cheap butterfly net, cheap binoculars, plaster mix and mesh. If the price is not a consideration, then go for it. She loves it and received it as a gift ... so we're all happy here. I would suggest you put in on your child's wishlist and have someone else overspend!

Good for a very young child who loves nature walks . While I agree with the review that said the contents were a bit cheap and cheesy, this was a Christmas gift for a three-year-old. Her mother had said she loved nature walks, and our granddaughter was delighted with it - wanted to go hunting bugs and butterflies immediately, in the snow. We can get her better binoculars, etc., when she's old enough to need and appreciate them. For a very young child who loves nature walks, this proved to be a great gift.

Fun & Informative . My 6 yr. old loves science. We've been using The Magic School Bus kits as our science curriculum for school. He begs to do it everyday, doesn't get bored, is attentive and actually retains a lot of information we learn from the kits. The kit includes activities that he can do himself (he can measure things and mix ingredients); the material in the kit is easy to clean up, so I don't have to worry about damaging clothes or my house; and there's enough material that if he wants to do the activity a second time, we can.
We are also part of a group with home school families where he participates in a science class with other kids his age. I often hear him saying, "I remember doing this!" and than giving the answers to the teacher's question. It's amazing we can have fun and gain an education, too!

Cons Review

A bit disappointing . We were so hopeful about this kit, but the activities are actually a bit lame in person. The instructions for making your own fossil dig have you making not nearly enough plaster/sand to actually cover the dinosaur. "Use this clay to make pretend teeth" doesn't really live up to the potential. And the wooden dinosaur is more fragile than first grade fingers seem ready for (or adult fingers-- not easy to remove). The kit says there are pictures online to better see the finished wooden dinosaur, but so far, it's just a small version of the single picture on the kit. A bit more hints or instructions would help the younger set. I'm very disappointed in this and expected better from Scholastic.

Great kit . My son had a great time learning about dinosaurs with this kit. The dinosaur model was a lot of fun to make and the instructions in this kit were fun and easy to follow. The time line chart with stickers is hanging in his room and the diorama is shown to everybody that comes to visit. Lot's of fun and my son loves giving this kit as birthday presents.

Great gift item for kids . Our 4-yr. old daughter got this kit as a birthday gift and has had a fantastic time doing the experiments with her dad. The pieces are well-labeled and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. They require a little parental guidance, but most can be started in a few minutes -- well within our daughter's attention span. She especially like picking apart the owl pellet and identifying the different mouse and mole bones. Growing brine shrimp also provided several weeks of entertainment as we saw the eggs hatch and grow. The kit also has suggestions for other experiments that use household items -- like dissolving an egg shell in vinegar. I highly recommend this kit to anyone who wants to give a child something more constructive, fun and educational than plopping him or her in front of the TV. And, I'm happy to say that it's actually fun for the adults too!

Extraordinary for budding geniuses . I have two young grandsons...one is rowdy and very athletic. The other is very cerebral and curious. This, obviously, is for the latter.
