This review is from : CHEM C2000 Intermediate Chemistry Kit
T&K Chem series is cumulative . I am going to buy some of these kits, but the Amazon site does not explain the sequencing. At the Thames and Kosmos site, they explain that Chem 2000 contains all of the experiments of Chem 1000 and then some. Likewise, Chem 3000 contains all of the experiments of Chem 1000 and 2000 and then some. I figured there might be other parents out there who wanted this piece of information.
CHEM C2000 Intermediate Chemistry Kit Reviews
Chem C 2000 good value . It must be good, I bought this kit to get my sons home school labs done for chemistry. The deal was he (had) to do one a week. The kit arrived yesterday and he has completed 1-12 in two days. I will tell you seltzer water is in the first part of the book so buy some before the kit arrives.
Other than that peroxide, alcohol, water, and vinegar were needed. Seltzer was not something I keep on hand but the other things were here. The only thing it lacks is a full list of other things you need so you can be prepared when the kit arrives. The price went down $2 after I purchased it. Which is good for you I guess. I can't complain I was pricing kits for over a month and this was by far the most complete with the best price. It is a good value. Books A million had it for $105 but when I went to buy it the price jumped to $150. I thought I had dyslexia but I had printed the page out 2 weeks prior and it said 105 on the printed page. To sum it up I we are vary happy with the kit.
CHEM C2000 Intermediate Chemistry Kit Opinions
Tons of Fun! . This is an excellent chemistry kit. I love the fact that manual is not difficult to read and my son was able to work independently on some of the experiments. I would highly recommend.
Truly pathetic excuse for a chemistry set... no chemical formulas at all . Truly pathetic excuse for a chemistry set... no chemical formulas at all.

I am truly disappointed with this poor excuse for a chemistry set. It is all colors and flashy things, nothing really is explained. There are no chemical formulas (even though it is targeted to older children who could perfectly understand something in a much simpler way things as the decomposition of water 2 H2O -> 2H2 + O2 rather than the OVERLY LONG and TRULY BORING text that goes along with each experiment and really explains very little or nothing at all. Wow! I know this is no longer the 1970's or 1980's but I really miss my chemistry set from back then. This chemistry set is really worthless.

This is my second T&K set (the first one was a physics set). I am really dismayed how poor they are in terms of actual explanations of the science behind the kit. It is so DUMBED DOWN that is extremely boring since at the end of the experiments you really gain no knowledge of what happened since the text only describes what you see.

I will *never* buy any T&K kit again.
Good but difficult. Not for the faint of heart. . There are many, many great things to do with this set. It is difficult for my son to work his way through, and is much better if I read the experiment first, then explain it to him as to what the goal is, and all the steps and ingredients. It's more like a teacher's manual. That said, I believe we will learn a LOT about chemistry!
Pleased but somewhat disappointed. . I purchased the CHEM C2000 for my son, so that we could do the experiments together, it was fun, I enjoyed it, however I was disappointed that it required external ingredients for some of the experiments. However, I fully recommend it.
Not a toy chem set . I got this set for our 9 year old who out grew his first chemistry kit. This one is "for real". In order to do the experiments you have to start at lesson 1 and work through the chapters. It feels like homeschool material, which is great, eventhough we don't homeschool. I will set aside time to work on it with my son, he can't do the work without parental help. I recomend it for those who really want to learn real chemistry.
Great Gift for a Budding Chemist . This chemistry kit has it all! Chemicals, an alcohol burner, and test tubes. It requires parent supervision, but is fantastic for those with an interest in chemistry. I got this for my son's birthday, and it has provided hours of fun! No accidents yet, but we are careful around here, and as a former science teacher, I supervise well. Super cool!

Cons Review
Only as good as the manual which is weak . Overall, this is a nice set. However, the manual could have (and should have) been written much better. On several experiments, it has induced frustration in my son and unfortunately, dampened his interest in chemistry instead of fostering it. A great example of this is the invisible ink experiment. You are over half way into the experiment before you are told to pull out a feather/ink quill or fine point paint brush (neither of which come with the set.) Next surprise, you are told that slightly yellow paper works best (hmmm, let me see, where is that stock of slightly yellow paper I keep around the house - Ah yes, next to my ink quill.) Finally, you are told that you need to mix up two addition solutions not initially mentioned.

Come on, folks. How hard is it to provide a simple "You will need these items for this experiment list" at the top of each experiment?

Additionally, I think the experiments would be a little more exciting if some more fun was introduced into the manual. Again, referring to the invisible ink experiment, some text about secret agents or on passing secret messages between friends might make it a little more exciting for kids.

The set is nice made and compiled so it certainly is worthy from that standpoint. It is also well packaged.

This review is from : Learning Resources Erupting Volcano Model
Daughter Loves It . My daughter was studying volcanos at school, so I found this at a perfect time. She loves it, and with one example, she can make her own volcano erupt whenever she likes. Clean-up is tolerable.
Learning Resources Erupting Volcano Model Reviews
Nice volcano- immediate satisfaction. . This volcano was a big hit. I read the enclosed booklet to my kids about the different types of volcanos. That was short enough but informative enough- just right. We separated the two parts of the volcano and talked about what each part of the labeled side does. Then we errupted it. That was the ONLY part that was a wee bit disappointing and I think that the reason for it was that we followed the recipe for lava in the booklet. That contained liquid dish soap. I think the dish soap slowed down the flow. It was probably more realistic that way, but not quite as exciting. Next time, we will leave the soap out. Overall, it was pretty good.
Learning Resources Erupting Volcano Model Opinions
Amazing educational resource but... . Because my 6 years old's son is a curious pre-scientific, I thought a real volcano (volcano model) could nourish his always thinking mind. However, the volcano was amazing just the first time he saw it. We make an eruption at the follow day and another one in the follow one. That's it! Now the box is standing in my room formally "inactive". As a teacher, I wondering if it could be a good experience for my students at school, but I don't know yet if for 3 years old could provide the same emotions than for a 5-6 years child. The information inside the model is more for older ones. For educational resource, it will help but for a regular present for your children (it doesn't matter how scientific they are) won't be a good-excited idea.
Great tool for the classroom! . I would recommend this to any parent or teacher looking to teach about volcanoes. It is interesting and fun for children of all ages.
Colossal Disappointment . What a colossal disappointment! This thing is cheaply made and poorly designed. It is not even a useful educational tool. One of the biggest rip-offs I have ever seen!
The Perfect Illustration for Jesus Blowing Away Our Sins . Sunday school and Vacation Bible School kids love the volcano. I label the baking soda as Sin and the red colored vinegar as the Blood of Jesus. They are able to see what the blood of Jesus does for our sins when we allow Him to be our Savior. They Get It. It is awesome when I find an illustration that sticks in the kids minds and explains Christ's love and salvation for us so well. I will use the volcano over and over again. Priceless!!!

This review is from : Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Reflector Telescope
Wonderful beginner scope . As a newbee to astronomy, I researched telescopes for months before deciding on the Skyquest XT8. My main concern was being able to carry it. I decided on this one because its total weight was around 42 lbs. You can seperate the base from the tube and carry it in two pieces, or you can carry the whole thing assembled. Since I am a female, 5'4", I still find it a bit bulky. However, I chose this one instead of a smaller one for the simple fact I want to see as much as I can see, and be able to carry it. I am so glad I did. My first few times seeing, I was awed. I easily found Jupiter: Very clear dark and light belts and surrounding moons, could even make out the dark spot! Saturn: Casini's division is evident on a clear, calm night, M42: stunning nebula like a "fan of light" in Orions sword, the moon looks so close, and you can make out so much detail in the craters, plus much more. I highly recommend the deluxe filter set also. The different filters make details in the planets and nebulae more visible. Blue is great for seeing Orions nebula, green gives jupiters belts more contrast, yellow helps with contrast in Venus cloud cover. Over all, I would give this scope a 10 out of 10. I certianly haven't been dissapointed! Orion's customer service is A+, which is incredible in itself.
Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Reflector Telescope Reviews
Orion XT8 SkyQuest Reflector Value Item ! . Lot of scope for the price, my first over 6 inches. Orion designed this to work right out of the box ! Main assembly is the base, will need a crescent wrench and phillips screw driver, rest is included. Sections of the base are pre-drilled, goes together rather easily. One of the best features of this model is that the scope moves silky smooth, up and down movement is wonderful, the base movement left to right is fine but slightly less easy as the cradle. Does have a problem looking straight up (Zenith) but to be fair, all my other mounts (equatorial and a fork mount) lack perfomance in this position.

Rain arrived same day as my scope, so later will give future optical performance, did look at ground objects and is very promising. Unit comes with a nice optical alignment eyepiece, was a slight shift from delivery, found it easy to tweak it in minutes, gives a bulls-eye when correctly centered.

At last clear sky, but full moon, still viewed the famed double double in Lyra, more alignment is needed but still obvious, tried to find M57 a known ring Nebula but the moon won out, observing the full moon was a beauty, use to seeing a washed out moon when fully lit but could see lots of detail-moving on to the North Star for its companion, was visible in lower powers, used a Televue Nagler 4.8MM for 250X, Huge Black Gap with the blue twin easily seen. A smaller scope will find this one but the companion glowed in the 8 inch. Mid morning hours had to glimpse at Mars, best eyepiece again the Nagler gave an impressive image, with a blue filter easily saw the polar cap, even tho smaller now, and pattern(s) showing. Couldn't resist using a 2X barlow on the Nagler eyepiece but the sky conditions would not permit detail, however the larger Martian Disk made the Polar Cap even more obvious.

Deep Sky will have to wait for when the moon clears. This is Not a portable, but is manageable as breaks down to the scope and the base, each about 20 lbs. Set up is fast and I like the spring mechanism, makes the movement even better. Also allows 2 inch eyepiece viewing as well as standard 1 1/4 inch. Will have loads of fun with this one.

Deep Sky (Clusters, Nebula, Galaxies, etc) is where a larger aperature will excel. The 8 inch image of M57 famed Ring Nebula was easy in just low power 60X, and large at 120X, could see the ring looking straigth on tho averted vision showed abit more, M27 the Dumbell, extended biscuit shape showed well again in only 60X, before the moon arrived glimpsed M13, large globular, tho the center blended together outer regions broke apart seeing more stars than use to in smaller instruments-all was just before full darkness, did manage to seek out Mars as keeps getting larger in the early morning sky, only few days after full moon shielded it with trees and Mars view was starting to show more detail, takes patience see, looking forward to better sky conditions. Later tried M13 at 250X, blew it apart, stars near core, breathtaking image even tho starting to get lower in sky !

MARS:
Sept 27th 4 AM, day after the rain cleared the skys and gave a beautiful view (250X, 4.8 Nagler televue eyepiece) of the planet, hints of detail, a S shape band across the center sphere, with Syrtis Major (triange like) easy to see, unfortunately the Martian Summer is steadily decreasing the size of the S P C (South Polar Cap) but could see a bright bead popping in and out of view. Angular size is now just over 17. Was intown viewing only, as the skys fogged up in the country, used the trick of observing under tree(s) to hold down the dew-rewarded with excellent seeing, used 80A Blue Filter.

Trapezium (E & F), Orion Nebula :
Late Sept AM viewed the Orion Nebula, not at transit but wanted to see the trapezium, a tight 4 star group nestled in the Nebula, easy to see the 4 stars but two others nearing 11th magnitude can be a slight challenge ( also are located close to brighter neighboring star(s) ), for the first time saw both of these E and F, conditions had them blinking on and off, the 8 inch gave my first glimpse at both of them, smaller apertures is possible, but I only detected one at best, this first time view for me was worth the price of the scope ! And the Orion Nebula, was beautifully flower-like, hints of green color.

MARS - Saturn Oct 1 BEST VIEW:
Just finished viewing Mars near 5 AM, 4 AM mirror was still settling even tho stored in garage, could not see the Trapezium Companions E and F till near 5 AM, went back to Mars and was huge difference, globe was now sharp, features showed the Syrtis Major starting to enter, but the two other Mare regions near center had details ! Areas defined, my best view to date ! Tho low in horizon looked at Saturn, could easily see the Cassini Division, more detail promised when transit is reached. Also observed a beautiful open cluster below Canis Major, exceptional night indeed and the XT8 performed much better than expected. Used Orange filter and 80 A Blue Filter, again Televue Nagler 4.8mm eyepiece 250X.

Comet Oct 2006:
Just caught Comet Swan 2006, is abit low so need horizon viewing, between Magnitude 6 and 7 for October in early evening sky after dusk, at 60X with 20mm supplied eyepiece nucleus of the comet had some size, moving scope hints of tail, about any size scope will pick this one up but the XT8 brightened the view, appears as a fuzz ball off handle of the big dipper nearing Bootes, use lower power to locate as no luck till I used a 40mm eyepiece for wider view, then 20mm gave exceptional image at 60X..all kinds of info on Comet Swan 2006 via internet, turned out brighter than expected, a great Oct 2006 object..<>..

Last on optics, not a perfect 10 (still does well !) but lots of things to iron out here, perhaps adding more areas of rest for the mirror, and lighter adjustment where the mirror is held in place-note also this is a F/6 system, shorter focal length, shorter tube does permit storage in my Sunbird's trunk ! Also allows lots of seeing in a seated postion. Fun Skys Ahead, WARREN .<>.
Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Reflector Telescope Opinions
Recommended . Firstly, before ordering online, please visit your local retailer and have a look/feel of the scope.

I bought this to replace a 60mm telescope which is very inconvenient to use and has given me more frustration than pleasure. Please, don't even consider buying smaller telescopes.

It took me about 2 hours to assemble the whole thing and I was being "helped" by children 3 year and 6 year old.

The base is made of wood. Weight-wise, it easy to carry, but shape-wise, it is hard and awkward. I have been carrying it without dismantling the tube/barrel.

In the beginning I was worried due to the lack of mechanism for fine adjustments. After I started using it, all my worries have disappeared - the movement is that smooth.

The scope looks big. XT6 appears to be reasonable in size for home use. I haven't compared the two looking at the sky, but XT6 is only ~4 pounds lighter. XT8 permits 2" eyepieces, XT6 doesn't. XT8 doesn't come with any 2" eyepieces, though.

Let me emphasize that it is very important for you to call Orion, find local retailers, call them to make sure that they have one on floor, visit them, and feel the scope.
Astounding! . Orion delivered on all they promised. I have enjoyed many nights of wonder and entertainment for myself and my family. This easy to use Telescope (XT8) is an excellent choice for a beginner. The simple design and easy set-up allowed me to begin my astronomy adventure the day my telescope arrived.

My interest in telescopes began with a Meade telescope purchased from a wharehouse. The frustrating instructions, total lack of customer support from Meade ( I waited over an hour, long distance, before a voice message informed me of an 800 number ) and missing parts prompted me to return it. On line research lead me to Orion and the rest has been nothing but enjoyment of the heavens.

You get a lot of bang for your buck! Saturn and Orion are awesome. I am planning ahead and have marked my calendar for the next available view of Jupiter. Orion's web-site continues to provide excellent useful information that is helping me to develop a wonderful hobby.

Amazon's buying power shaved a few days of my wait while this model was on backorder from the manufacturer.
Great telescope . I am very impressed by this telescope so far, although I haven't spent a lot of time looking at anything beyond a few planets and the moon. The views of Saturn are incredible. I can't believe how well I can make out the rings.

The only negatives of this telescope are the size and weight. It is a pain dragging it out of the garage each night.
The ideal amateur telescope . This is not only the ideal scope for beginners but enough of an instrument to show you new things in the sky for years to come. It is sturdy and simple to operate. It has enough light-gathering power (more important than magnification) to reveal dim star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies and good enough optics to show you the surface of planets like Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. Affordable as this scope is, there is no reason to give so much as a glance at the numerous trashy 60mm refractors with exaggerated magnification claims that litter the market.

Some advice on selection. Dobsonians like this one come in a range of sizes. A 114mm (4 ?") is a bit on the small side but still a fine instrument, especially if your ability to carry large objects is limited. A 200mm (8") scope like this one is right in the middle of the recommended range. A 250mm (10") is on the big side, and you should buy one only if you are able-bodied.

Some advice on use. Viewing through a telescope is less like playing a CD and more like playing a guitar. Finding objects takes a little bit of practice. To simplify it, I would suggest discarding the finder supplied with this scope and installing two finders: a 50mm "crosshair" finder plus a red-dot finder to aid in initial pointing. You will also need to buy an atlas (Sky & Telescope's Pocket sky Atlas is the best available), a red flashlight to view the charts without blowing out your badly-needed night vision, and a guidebook to lead you to interesting objects. These investments will greatly add to your enjoyment.

What more can I say? This is the kind of scope that experienced observers have been trying to steer novices towards for decades. Although, I recommend that you do your homework before buying any scope--learn the sky and get to know experienced stargazers who can advise you--when it comes time to purchase, you could hardly do better than this scope.

For more advice, see my encyclopedic guide here on Amazon, "So you want to buy a telescope."
Good price good scope. . If you've never bought a telescope before - this is my recommendation. We researched for months before we purchased and this has been everything we dreamed of. Dobsonian mounts are much easier to use than equitorial - for the beginner. However, if you're going to get really serious in the future, note that Dobsonians aren't as precise, and on hot, humid nights, one wrong move and you're 20 million light-years away from where you wanted to be. Equitorial gives you more versatility, particularly at high magnification and for moving objects. Orion builds a good, durable scope with nice mirrors that have really good detail unless you start pushing the upper limits on this. Weight and light-capture are a tradeoff. If you want to see more, you're going to carry more. This is not a small scope - it's about 4 feet tall and a bit heavy. I wouldn't let a child much under 13 carry it around. Despite what you may read, the stand does allow you to put the scope about anywhere you want. The limitation is that folks should stand still or the ground vibrations can make it difficult to see deep-sky options. The software included for finding stars and objects is almost as much fun as the scope itself. It doesn't have the night-view option, but that's available with an upgrade.
Great Tele . I have been exploring telescopes for me, and I want a good sized aperture with good resolution, all around good. This tele is amazing!

Combine the Tornado Tube® with two 2 liter soda bottles and provide a hands-on demonstration of `VORTEX ACTION.'

This review is from : Twister tube connector
GREAT . We first tried LOTS and LOTS of duct tape and plastic and metal washers but after numerous attempts they just did not hold up well after many tries. The duct tape would not hold up well on the drive to school so we opted to buy this inexpensive yet amazingly working product. Just add 1 drop of blue food coloring as we tried reds, orange and others yet the blue worked best as we saw more of the vortex action with just 1 drop of blue, mix it and u will see its plently. My 4 yrd olf son asked in a few years of he could use this same device when its time for him to do the same in school.
Twister tube connector Reviews
The secret for stopping leaks: . I needed one of these couplers that absolutely would not leak, even under CO2 pressure. I read review after review on various brands that were generally positive but all generally leaked at least a little (duck tape does NOT hold up when the water source is under the adhesive). The was the only one that had no reviews that mentioned leaking, but only one review that had just made the step up from pure duck tape, so obviously, no contest there. Will this brand work with no leaks? Honestly I didn't even give it a chance by itself, but the inside thread is perfect for what I had in mind:While I was waiting for this to arrive in the mail, I went to a local hardware store and for about $1, I bought a small pack of flat, rubber, garden-hose washers and put one in each end of this coupler. Then, I removed the white plastic rings from the neck of both 2-litter bottles (the ring that's left over from the cap), I added the liquids, and screwed both bottles in.The result was perfect, even when the liquids were carbonated. The rim of each bottle screwed into the rubber washers, making a perfect seal, and the rim of the coupler lined up perfectly with the collar of each 2-litter bottle.

I look foward to several more of these... . ...but at $15 shipping, it better come in gold leaf wrapping, with a DVD of how it can be used. Shesh...it's barely a #11 envelope sized thing. $15?!?!

This review is from : Mould & Paint Dinosaur
Lots of fun with a little adult supervision . The first part, mixing the clay and pouring it in the molds, requires a little adult supervision. Then there is the wait: Are they set yet, mom? Once they are ready, the kids can paint them all by themselves, and they have lots of fun doing it. It is a good thing that there is enough clay to make two rounds of dinosaurs, so that they can repeat the experience at a later date. There are also fish and fairies and other themes. I find this little toy affordable, creative and highly entertaining, even for moms and dads!

This review is from : Chemistry Lab Set - Intermediate Level A
great starter kit . We have enjoyed this as a great starter kit. We also ordered aprons, a few more beakers and a scale to round out our explorations. The lab equipment is glass and "real" which is what our son wanted. Husband is pleased it is real equipment which means more possibilities in what they can do with the set. This has led to hours of fun and also serious learning.
Chemistry Lab Set - Intermediate Level A Reviews
Chem Set Review . I just received this set today and I am very impressed with the content and quality.
A great starter set that can easily be be added upon. I would recommend this to anyone,
especially those who want to introduce their kids to what really makes up the world we live in.
Chemistry Lab Set - Intermediate Level A Opinions
Not bad pretty good . I bought this because I was wanting to try my hands at plant alchemy, and learn some basic chemistry. I got everything in the set . But one problem was when I got it the graduate was broken. which was no there fault, Postal services fault. It is great for a beginner level chemist to learn the basics of chemistry. and not bad for the price.
FAST & AMAZING!! . First, the item (which is actually items)is exactly as promised in the description and I am very excited to get to use them. The most amazing part is how fast the delivery was. I placed the order on Friday and had it on my doorstep on Monday. WOW.
