Insect Lore bug jar . We purchased 3 of these for our younger children who are bug fanatics! This product is rated only okay for me because the handle repeatedly comes off! This is frustrating for my kids (ages 2,4,& 6), and myself with the repeated " MOM, can you fix this?" Otherwise my children are very interested in finding all the various bugs in our backyard. They mostly use the magnifying lid and look in the grass to see the bugs more closely, again probably so they don't have to be bothered with the handle issue. Honestly,we could probably have given the kids a magnifying glass and an old tupperware container and they would be just as happy with that!

Not bad... . This product served the purpose. I wanted to introduce my 3 year old to the butterfly life cycle. It did a great job with that. I was surprised at the additional charge to order the caterpillars, though. It was only $3, but I didn't read anything about the extra charge before I ordered the kit. Another small complaint I have is that there was nothing included to attach the cocoons to the inside of the tent. The instructions say to use safety pins, which weren't included. I didn't have any so I just laid them on the floor of the tent and that worked fine.
Overall, a good kit and a good value.

Butterfly Bugalow success!! . I have used this product for the past 3 years. My kids love watching the caterpillars go throught the process to become a butterfly. I have always used the bungalow for my kids personally.....all 3 caterpillars turned into butterflies. Very easy to use and a huge success in my house!!

science and memories all in one . My children and I have purchased and enjoyed one of these kit in the past. The other housing we had was bigger so we received more caterpillars with it - understandable. I had such a good time with my two older kids I felt my third child needed to experience the project as well. I used it as a homeschool science project and incorporated drawings of the life cycle and numerous butterfly themed papers to complete off of the internet. There's nothing like watching and observing the real thing. The caterpillars were healthy and quickly grew. It's a simple process to care for them. In fact, we had a busy summer schedule and I was worried about the maintenance but other than observation and a handful of days of providing sugar water sprinkled over flower petals, it really was a breeze. We sent them on their way in our sunflower garden. I'm definitely pleased!

Butterflies are kind of gross. . . . What happens to a butterfly is not for the faint of heart. That being said the educational value of this bungalow is really fantastic. All 3 butterflies made it to the crysalis stage. But only 2 emerged. One seemed to get stuck and die. Really great for my kids though. Would recommend this especially to Urban families who don't see a lot of nature.

Insect Lore is un-truthful . Insect Lore is un-truthful - The whole thing is neat and fun but Insect Lore, the manufacturer is full of butterfly gunk. They said on the box you get 5 butterfly larve. In reality you get "3 to 5" which in reality is 3. You talk to them and complain and they say even though the box says "you get 5" they reserve the right to mail out "3-5" instead. How is that even legal??? Liars/con-men/whatever. I am just thankful my daughter enjoyed the lower amount she was sent.

Very small . I bought the fire ant and the hornet for my boys for Christmas. The visual effect is wild, and we all got a kick out of it. Be aware, though, these masks are rather small. Even on my 6-year-old, who has a round shape to his head, these are small (narrow across the face more than anything else). These are more of a novelty than something they'll play with often, partly because they're small and partly because it's actually kind of hard to get around while you're wearing them. Rather disorienting! I made the kids take them off before going on the stairs.

I'd say these are best for kids aged 3-5, or those who have oval-shaped heads!! We all tried them on and laughed out loud at how silly we each looked. Made for a fun Christmas morning and some silly pics.

Very realistic . My kids will be doing a nature study and I purchased this so they could get a true feel for the life cycle of the ant. I was surprised at just how realistic this was. The kids are truly able to see what the ant world looks like that is too small for them to experience with their own eyes. While they won't replace being out in nature and watching ants in their natural habitat, this is honestly as far as they will probably come to seeing larvae and such.

Neat little toy . I bought this for my 4 yr old last summer and he used it all summer long. It has a durable hook-and-loop strap and the top snaps very securely. It works best for very small insects such as ladybugs, lovebugs, and crickets. My son has even put very tiny frogs in it. Insects such as dragonflies and butterflies are too large for it. It also came with a plastic toy bug in it and he loved using the fake bug to scare grandparents and other relatives.

My 3 Year Old LOVES this watch! . My 3 year old loves this watch because it leaves his hands free to catch additional insects/bugs; and I love this watch because it tightly clicks shut! So many other bug "boxes" and containers just have lids that are placed on top but don't lock into place which means 99% of the time the little critters are going to end up in places you don't want them! (such as running around your house or in your car while you are driving and your child is strapped in his carseat so obviously can't re-catch them). I have bought about a dozen or so other bug "boxes" or "houses or "containers" and this is by far the best one. I only wish I had found it before wasting all my money on all those others.

Lovin' the bug watch! . I ordered this for our 4.5yo son for Christmas, to use next Spring. I broke down & gave it to him when it came today & he LOVES it! Now our 5.5yo son wants one too, & he's not even the tree hugger! LoL

Poorly Constructed . I bought this for a 5 year old who loves to collect bugs. I thought it would be interesting for him to carry around the bugs he found without having to place them in a cup or in his hand. Though the concept for the gadget was interesting, the "Watch-A-Bug" latch would not close properly. By the end of the day, he got tired of having to continuosly close it shut and removed it from his wrist. He lost it in a day.

Great product . Bought this product hoping my daughter would get interested in the outdoors, and it worked. She went around collecting bugs and such asking all kinds of questions.

Bug watch . My children were very excited to receive these watches. The only problem I came across was that the netting is very delicated and quickly became damaged with holes.

Cute idea . My son loves bugs, he loves catching them and making "pets" of them (although I don't let him keep anything longer than a day), he loves this toy. ALTHOUGH I think it's a tad small for things like crickets and grasshoppers, probably more suitable to ladybugs, pillbugs. My son likes having his new friends to carry along with him. This toy has been left outside without rusting up (on the screen) and put up with my 5 year old who is pretty rough with his stuff (and often climbs trees while wearing this). Overall I'm happy with the product, he also has a larger screened bug cage and he uses them both to transport his bugs around. The bugs cannot escape once the "cage" is secured so if your little bug-lover likes to bring them inside you don't have to worry about them getting all over your house.

Cool Bug Watch - Awesome Toy! . This bug watch is unique. It was purchased as a birthday gift for my 7 year old son, who is extremely interested in bugs, lizards, frogs and other small animals. He already has several other types of "bug homes". We live in South Florida, so it's always "bug season" around here! This little gadget is pretty cool because it's portable and allows my son to do other activities, while keeping the creepy crawlers close at hand. The thing I like most about it, is that once it's time to come inside, or go to bed... we MUST release the captured creatures. With some of the other bug crates that he uses, it suddenly becomes an issue once it's time to release the bugs. With this little Bug Watch, there is NO room to create a habitat. As a result, all bugs MUST be set free to buzz another day. No more long term buggy commitment. He can look at the bugs close up, carry them around with him, and then at the end of the day, it's easy (and emotionally painless) to set them free. The wrist strap is durable, the top pops right open when you press the release button, and it's the perfect size for small insects. An overall good buy, especially for the price!

great idea poorly made . It's a neat idea but the "screen" is a very weak fabric mesh that was quickly broken. Also the watch band was so stiff that it hurt my four year old's wrist. Furthermore, rather than a velcro closure as was indicated on the box, it came with the kind that requires a plastic bump to be inserted in a hole. Given the stiffness of the band, even I found putting it on and taking it off to be a chore and my son wasn't close to being able to, which frustrated both of us. I wonder if the company decreased the quality after the purchase of some of the other reviewers?.

Great Fun and Learning!! . These Creature Peepers are wonderful!! Our 4-year-old just loves his! Before we had this, he was always bringing his newly-found "friends" into the house. Yuck!! Since buying the Creature Peeper, he still brings his 6 and 8-legged "friends" into the house- but now I am much calmer about it! He loves to catch all sorts of bugs and study them through the magnifying scopes in the top and bottom of this toy. Great fun for curious children!!

Good bug viewer for kids. . I got this along with a bug book because my boys, 4 and 5, have started expressing a lot of interest.

What's to say? The Peeper does a great job of displaying captured critter magnified from both above and below.

My minor complaint would be that the top piece doesn't fit as snugly as I would like. I added some tape around the edge to make the top less likely to come off when inconvenient.

Overall a great toy and has been holding up well so far. Approx 2 months.

Loads of Fun! . Bought this for my granddaughter who is five. She has had a wonderful time inspecting a multitude of unsuspecting creepy-crawlers. Her mother, my daughter, does supervise to make sure nothing that bites or stings is picked up for inspection.

Critical Flaw . The lid doesn't secure to the unit so it is only suitable for adult use. Children do not have the coordination to keep the unit upright while trying to view the unit from the side. Unfortunately, the lid that contains the bug falls off unless the unit is held perfectly level. This is not good if you are trying to teach a child to confront their bug fears.

Great gift idea for the little bug lover . I got the creature peeper, along with a lady bug house, and a bug book for my 3 year old niece who apparently hates dirt but looovveeessss bugs- go figure : )! Well my sister was getting fed up with her bringing creepy crawlies into the house and this was a good solution. She also takes her ladybugs out of their house and can look at them closely and carry them around with her everywhere, which you know how much the little ones like to carry their things around. My sister and niece love it and she said it is quite durable. It's been pulled on, dropped, you name it and is still in the condition it was received in! Really great, educational product without the yuck factor!

Great observation pod but top magnifier cone does not stay on . This product was purchased in conjunction with the laser vaccum gun for collecting bugs for a boy turning 6. This is a great magnifier as it shows the top and bottom of the bug with a mirror below the bug, but beware that the cone that rests on top does not screw on and you just have to keep it upright on a flat surface to keep it in place so your critter doesn't escape! Keep this toy outside if bugs give you the creeps! Otherwise great toy. Plastic could crack if dropped on cement.

peeping at bugs. . My grandson liked this toy alot. Not only is he picking up bugs outside, he can put them into his peeper and look at them close up. It is real easy for him to use.

peeper . I bought it for my child and gave it away because the lid does not screw on or stay secured in any way. This would be a good product if they fix the top. When the bug is in the toy and your child walks around with it and the top falls off there goes the bug. I called amazon and they let me keep the toy and gave me the money back.

Cute but flimsy top . The item is cute and functional but the dome viewer top doesn't stay on, it pops right off. Would have been better if it screwed on and stayed in place. With a kid running around, it'll come right off.

Ladybug fun and interesting for 3 year old . My son, 3,5 years, loves these. (We also have ant, frog and butterfly.) He likes to sort them and talk about them and what they are doing. We looked up some videos on youtube showing the metamorphosis of the butterfly. The videos helped my son to understand that the four figures were different stages of the same animal. Horrifying Customer Service . I purchased the Butterfly Habitat and sent in the coupon, with a check for the caterpillars.

Insect Lore cashed my check but I never received the caterpillars. After waiting for 3 weeks, I tried calling, but their customer service team never picked up the phone. I waited multiple times for 25, 35, and once 45 minutes!!
I also sent multiple emails, using their website email, and never once received a response.
I bought this for my son's birthday, and his disappointment was the worst part of this miserable experience. He kept asking where his caterpillars were, and they never came. Very sad, indeed...

Look for another vendor . The caterpillars are an excellent gift - my niece loves them; however, I strongly recommend finding another vendor. When you order the butterfly garden you have to open the box to get out the certificate and mail it back with money for S&H in order to receive the butterflies. Based on comments by others I thought I was planning well ahead when a month before my niece's birthday I order this certificate separate from the butterfly garden so I could purchase the caterpillars in advance and avoid some of the problems others described. However, it took almost two weeks for the certificate to arrive. Then I had to fax it back to them to order the caterpillars and it took more than two weeks for the caterpillars to arrive. When I called to complain about the shipping time, their customer service rep - Jamie - told me "that's why we tell you it takes three weeks" and when I pointed out that no where in the materials I received with my certificate did it say three weeks she had no explanation. After my experience with them, I will not order from them again and have since discovered that there are plenty of biological supply companies with competitive prices that have moved into the 21st century and allow you to order the caterpillars directly online and that will delivery them overnight or two-day shipping. Do your research first - the butterfly garden itself is cute and worth the $15 but order the butterflies elsewhere.

Awesome buterflies . I have bought these butterflies now for a few years for my kids. They love watching the larvae and cocoon and hatching. It is all so miraculous. Wonderful! They send you 5 larvae and say at least 3 will hatch into butterflies and everytime I have ordered (at least 5 times by now) I have had all 5 hatch.

Costly to get more . I love this product and idea...The problem I have is that the butterflies on their own are alot of times more expensive than ordering the whole kit with the big net, etc. For example; right now the butterfly garden is only $13.00 and comes with the certificate for 5 butterflies yet if you want to just get more butterflies; it costs $16 and you don't get the whole garden with them so it's better to just order another garden! I also ordered the pavillion for $25 and it came with a certificate for 10 butterflies yet to order 10 butterflies alone; it comes to $32!!! So again, makes more sense to order the entire butterfly pavillion again then just the butterflies. I do love this item though as does my son and now I have friends and other family members who are ordering them as it is really cool. I just wish ordering just the butterflies was cheaper than having to keep ordering the whole kit each time you wanted to get more.

Re-ordering more caterpillars is too expensive!!! . I agree with a previous post that to re-order is too expensive. If the company reduces the cost to re-order, I am sure they would receive several repeat orders. I would buy regularly if the price was the same as the original coupon/certificate- $3-$5 for 5-6 caterpillars with food. I would probably order monthly.

Don't Even Get Started - Refill Costs are Ridiculous . Our seven year old loved this, at least until she missed the butterflies emerging. Had we realized that it costs MORE to purchase a refill of 3-5 larvae than purchasing a brand new kit we would not have started. Now we have a pouty kid who wants to grow more butterflies and we refuse to spend the money or buy new kits (what a waste). Don't even get started unless you plan to invest in overpriced larvae. We will be going into our garden to find bugs for the net container...they are free.

butterflies . My granddaughter loved this! She spent hours watching for the hatching of "her" butterflies. Works especially well for the pre-k-kindergarten set.

Somebody must not read directions. . I am not sure what happened with the other reviewers, but I purchased the whole kit as a gift for a great niece last spring.By carefully following directions she ended up with six very healthy butterflies that were released into her yard. She now can't wait to do it again this spring.

I recommend this kit highly. It is a great educational experience.

Very life like . I really like these models. We are doing nature study with our kids for homeschool and these models are so much nicer than trying to handle the real thing. Especially since many of the early stages in the life cycle are hard to spot with the naked eye (or even a magnifying glass). This model is accurate as far as I can tell from books I have read. The pieces are big enough to see nice details and big enough for kids to handle with ease. Having a good book handy that covers the mealworm works best with the model as the life stages are written on the packaging only. So, if you aren't familiar with watch you are looking at you can get lost if you throw the package away. For the price this is really excellent and I have purchased pretty much all of the models due to how well they are constructed.

It is the best bug jar ever. :) . I bought 4 of these jars for my bug center outside..... They are used on a daily basis with the children in my child care... They are very sturdy, and the handles are nice for the kids to carry around and show off the bugs they have caught!

Not best ever bug jar . The jar has a nice see through area - but the lid is difficult for little hands to get on and off - and the handle has to be turned down in order to do it. (Handle popped off the first time we did it - you would have to keep putting it back on.) I have the other one with a little door on the end that is easy to slide open. Other downside - the jar is slippery so bugs don't crawl around in it like they do on the screen bug house. No - not the best ever bug jar. And with three grandsons - I should know.

Just a plastic jar - needs magnifier . I purchased this bug jar with a bug vaccuum for my son. I serves its purpose and contains bugs and has a breathable lid. But, it's just a simple plastic jar. I wish it had some type of magnifying lens so he could see the bugs up close. It also comes with a plastic praying mantis bug in it. My son thought that was cool and thought the bugs he caught would be scared by it.

Best Ever Bug Jar Review . I was disappointed with this bug jar from the beginning. The green handle comes off quite easily and often. It goes back on but will not stay due to it being cheaply made. If the handle stayed on all the time, my kids and I would love it.

It's a Butterfly net . [...] It's a nice net. Not all butterfly nets are created equal, as my daughter and I found out. Some don't offer much netting, so you are unable to carefully close the net all the way, thus allowing you to safely transport the butterfly. Without the extra slack, you will either injure the butterfly, or accidentally let it go prematurely. The butterfly shape of the net is cute, but serves no additional pragmatic purpose. It's just a good butterfly net for a relatively inexpensive price. If you want one, I'd recommend it.

Eviction Day . I received this net today and today was eviction day for 7 lizards who made a home in my screened porch. I've tried everything from brooms to spraying water to get rid of these lizards without harming them for months and nothing worked. It was actually fun to use this net and the lizards didn't seem to mind it at all. I held it close to them, blocked their escape and was able to get them inside the net one at a time and then released them into the yard.

butterfly net . Okay, I'm a grown-up not a kid. But, I still like this net. I use it as a tool to help me figure out who's who in my vegetable garden. Good bugs are welcome. Bad bugs are not. So, I catch moths and butterflies and then check them out on the internet or the library.

A net that works very well . I live in a country setting, and flying critters make their way into the house quite a bit. This net makes it very easy to catch just about anything quite easily. The netting is rather delicate and fine, so careful treatment is a must, but the depth of it ensures that whatever is swooped up can easily be kept in there. Some nets I've used are too shallow to twist and keep closed. For the price, this net works very well.

Have had a blast with it . We catch butterflies and lizards with it. Then release them. We love this net.

net in review . Got this net for myself as a way to catch and look at insects. It is a sturdy net, but isn't large enough for my purpose because of the butterfly shape and also the net wasn't deep enough. It would be a great catch for a kiddo however.

Butterfly net . Perfect tool to get a child started. It works well, but handle should be a few inches longer to improve its ability.

Great hummingbird rescuer . I bought this for one purpose: to catch the suicidal hummingbirds that fly into our garage and can't fly back out. It's great. It saved at least five this fall. My husband rolled his eyes at the idea, until I caught the first bird the next day. We simply hover the net next to the bird, swoop it up, then release the bird out of harm's way. Unorthodox, I'll warrant, but far better than doing carcass duty!

short handle . Handle is shorter than expected (especially for adult use), but otherwise a good net. With purple color and butterfly shape, a bit more fun than standard net but also looks more "girly."
