Great Microscope; Faulty On/Off Switch . This is an excellent microscope for a budding scientist or entomologist. We bought it for our 6-year-old son. It's durable and sturdy, and the optics allow for decent magnification of insect legs and heads, rocks, sticks, and other 3D objects in addition to slides. It is not high-powered enough to view blood cells or other microscopic samples, but it is a good starter microscope for the price. My only complaint is that the on/off switch is a bad design. It's a small push-button that jammed inside the instrument the first time we used it. The light still works but only by jabbing the now-barely-visible button with a pencil or other sharp object. Aside from this design flaw, I'm happy with this microscope.

A GOOD SCOPE . A pretty good scope for the money. Great for the hobbiest and for general work. It is typical in design for what is coming out of China these days. The objectives are acromats and can be upgraded to semi-plan or plan if you desire. The light source is good. Not great but adaquate for general use. I really like binocular scopes. You can always see more with both eyes than trying to squint thru one eye. Mecanical stage is a big plus especially at higher magnifications. It has both coarse and fine focus plus individual eye adjustments on both ocular lenses. Magnification goes up to 1000x but you will need oil immersion at top end. Don't forget to use plastic cover when not in use or dust will spoil optics in a big hurry. For a better selection try [...].

Disappointing quality . I reviewed this same product here on Amazon but since it was a different vendor apparently the review doesn't show up both places. For the sake of other customers I thought I'd post some of the same information here, since there are precious few reviews of products like these.

We got this same set of 25 slides for use by a middle-schooler with a strong interest in the subject, for whom this should have been just right for home use. The idea was that it would (as the product name and description suggest) provide an overall introduction to Biology. If -- repeat IF -- every slide in the box showed what it was supposed to, and did so clearly, then it would be ideal for that purpose. But it doesn't.

The plan (and advertised claim) is that you can see one-celled organisms, then simple organisms, and then parts or samples from complex organisms, even including some human tissue. Both the plant and animal kingdoms are represented. It's a great idea, but the actual kit is messed up by surprisingly sloppy handling and production by Konus.

Lots of slides had broken or bent-up specimens. The slides themselves were all fine -- no broken glass or anything. No, the people who handled the specimens and put them under the glass were careless, and as a result too many slides do not show what they are supposed to.

On a couple of slides we could not even find anything that resembled the description on the label. We have a decent-quality student microscope that was able to see everything on the other slides, so I believe the slides in question were indeed devoid of intact samples.

And when I say, "see everything" that includes way too much dust on nearly every slide. The microscope could see the dust clear as day. And in a couple of cases, slides included human hairs, threads from somebody's clothing, etc. Yechh. Yes, you can buy slides of human hairs -- but that's not what these were supposed to be!

We went to a lot of trouble in choosing these, and paying slightly more than for kits in which the "plan" is less clear. (Amazon sells various "sets" of slides that have a cross section of miscellaneous stuff, that would not really serve for any kind of organized scientific study.)

This set is theoretically designed for genuine educational use, but only a few of the slides are clear enough to show what the label states without a lot of guesswork. That disrupts any attempt to look at the slides in an organized sequence, and to learn about living structures getting more complex, etc. -- too many links in the chain are missing or too hard to see.

It is possible that another shopper might get a kit with better production and quality control, which is why I gave it three stars. If you could get this whole set without dust, and every specimen intact and properly stained, it could be great. But I suspect that's really impossible at the kinds of prices these things sell for. If we ever get serious about this I guess we'll try again and expect to pay a whole lot more.

Note: I assume -- but don't know -- that the smaller Konus sets are merely subsets of this one. So presumably the quality is no better than this, but who knows. Perhaps other customers will have better luck. In any case, now you know.
