Not so cheap thrill... . Basically you receive a block of sandstone that comes with one excavation tool (a stick) and a brush. My kids chopped at this block for about a 1/2 hour - 45 minutes to get at all the hidden treasures which was 1 sarcophagus and 4 canopic jars. Then they had fun pulverizing the rest of the brick into pieces to make sure there wasn't anything else. After wards, my daughter carried her treasures around with her for a day or two and more recently has quite forgotten about them. I recommend Lift The Lid On Mummies for longer lasting and educational value - it seemed to be the better deal of the two I bought.

Interesting... . My 10 year old son really enjoyed this product. I must admit...the little piece of wood they give you makes breaking the "brick" tough but it was fun to watch my son's face when he finally hit on a part of the objects inside. He had fun dusting off the objects as he worked to free them.

Pirate Dig was a hit ! ! ! . My six year old grandson loves Pirates and this kit was absolutely perfect. All evening he kept going back to the "dig". It's difficult to find a toy to hold his attention but this kit did the job. He was ecstatic with every bone he found. I also purchased a "Crystal Mining Kit "for my three year old grandson and "Pirate Treasure Dig - kit and game" for my 5 year old granddaughter. The entire family was down on the floor - with their Safety Goggles on - digging - it was fabulous and a lot of fun. Each child had their own exploration going and the adults rotated between helping and looking at their finds. According to the box, there are several Pirates available. It would be great for future purchases to be able to choose which Pirate to buy. A lot of fun for all a good purchase!

very fun . My kids love this. They love pirates & they love to dig. It occupies them for quite a while. The downside to this toy is trying to put the skeleton together with the string once he is 'dug up'. The digging tool they give you is pretty useless, but we use the end of one our spoons & it works perfect.
My kids keep asking to buy them more. They want to collect all the pirates.

It is messy, which is not fun for me, but again, the kids love that too!

Great excitement for my 5yr old . My 5 yr old son loves anything to do with pirates and treasure. He loved this kit, but he could not easily excavate as the clay is a little too hard for little hands. We ended up doing this together, me chipping and him sweeping away the chunks & dust.He thoroughly enjoyed it and we hung the assembled skeleton up in his room.

Good for Careful Kids . I bought this for my youngest sister, a very smart six year old who loves archaeology. She loved it and spent hours carefully digging away with all of the little tools. My other sister, twelve years old, also loved it. I though she would have been too old for it, but she begged the youngest sister to let her play with it. She wouldn't let her, so she took it while no one else was home one day. She wasn't patient or precise, so the fragile bones snapped. The youngest was devastated when she found out. I highly recommend this toy for patient kids. If there are siblings in a family, buy one for each just in case. :)

Box of Rocks . Good, but not perfect. Some of the mineral specimens have been tumbled and polished, which makes them pretty, but removes the diagnostic criteria (cleavage, crystal shapes) that are a basis for identifying minerals. Quartz appears more than once in the collection. Partitions in the plastic box that the collection comes in are thin, and in both of the boxes I bought a heavy specimen had broken a partition in transit, damaging the more fragile specimen in the adjacent cubicle. The accompanying booklet is good, but it shows some minerals that are not in the collection. The small magnifying glass is a good touch.

Box of rocks . My son has really enjoyed this product and I like that it comes with a pamphlet that describes the different kinds of rocks. The container that the rocks came in has a few cracks on the bottom, however it is still very much usable.

Recieved order of box of rocks and container was broken in several spots. ordered a replacement ( with no problem) and the replacement container was also broken - kept it anyway - my son loves the rocks and was okay with a broken plastic box. Geo rocks . The rocks will be interesting to study for my 5 year old. However, the rocks came in a bag instead of the handy box. I would have liked to have the box to keep the rocks organized.

basic . It is exactly what is says it is...a box of rocks. My daughter loves them so its a great deal for the price. I only wish they would have a better labeling system for the rocks instead of searching through the book and trying to match them.

Awesome for a young boy . My son loves rocks. Santa brought him this for Christmas. He loves them. It comes with a small book used to identify the rocks and explains how they are created. The plastic magnifying glass included must have broke during shipping, but its not a big deal.

Rock Box . This is an awesome kit. I bought it for 2 of my grandchildren and they have spent hours with it. It is a perfect introduction to rocks and a great beginning for any child interested in things outside!

Do-It-Yourself Excavation! . I just gave this to my 6 year old daughter for her birthday yesterday. It was the first gift she wanted to "play" with. She chose to start in the center and chipped away at the volcano. She worked diligently and excavated 3 rocks in about 1 and 1/2 hours. At bedtime she protested stopping to go to sleep. First thing in the AM she was back digging and found 2 more rocks. To say she loves it is an understatement. She's always loved collecting rocks she finds laying about, but this has an added excitement of digging and searching for the reward. She's very proud of herself after her hard work produces the stone. Also, she's enjoying learning about the layers of the earth and the different types of rocks of how they form. It definitely requires adult help for her age. It was hard for her to use the included wood stick to break apart the chalk like plaster. We ended up giving her a small flat head screw driver to use and it worked much better. However, when she was close to a stone we went back to the stick because we didn't want to chance damaging the stone. She tired kind of quick, so we stepped in to dig and quickly found out ourselves how tiring it is on the hand/wrist. After a few breaks she wanted to dig again. This is a great idea!

big rocks . I got this for Christmas and I did it today on the 26th. When I found the first stone I knew what it was, Obsidian, but it took me 20 minutes to get to the Obsidian. My best stone is Marble. I recommend this item.

Approved by my junior geologist of a son! . I got this for my almost-5-yr-old son for Christmas, and he LOOOOVED it! It took him quite awhile to excavate all 12 of the rocks, so it was great for me to have something for him to focus so much time on, and he absolutely had a blast doing so. Each rock he uncovered was a new burst of excitement. Pretty messy, of course, so I would recommend it for outside, or if inside, put a sheet of newspaper down under your kiddo's work area, and you're good to go!

Wonderful Kit for kids!! . I ordered this item for my 5 year old nephew. He LOVED it!!! He and his dad quickly went out and set about 'excavating'! The gems inside were fairly large (much larger than other kits his friends have had). A great kit to do with your dad! Arrived in very timely manner and in great condition! Thanks!

Fun for learning & hobby . My son enjoys collecting rocks. I got him this so he could collect rocks, but also intrigue him with where they come from. He enjoys digging them out with his older brother. What I like is it keeps him occupied for hours and he is only a third of the way through.

Great teaching toy . My grandson loved it. He is seven and it kept his interest for 3 to 4 hours and he now cherishes the stones he classified himself. I enjoyed helping him. It is a great project, but I think it would be a bit much for kids without adult supervision.

A good toy. . I ordered this for my son who is interested in excavations. This is basically a hard piece of clay with different rocks buried inside it that you excavate with some supplied tools. My son immediately took to this toy. I explained to him the different rocks and how they each come from different areas of the Earth. So this was actually a good teaching tool. The rocks are not very pretty and need to be washed before comparable to the supplied description handout. The box is thin cardboard and very flimsy. The pointy tool broke quickly so he used different things lying around the house. But that piece of clay stuff, I tell you, he really loved it! He dug and dug and was excited to come home the next day from school and get more rocks. I told him about each one.(after some looking up on the net) So really, I would pay for the clay excavation thingy again lol!

It's fun but do it outside . My son got this for Christmas. He loves rocks, and digging for them was great fun. The only BIG problem was that is was horribly DUSTY. My son had to wear sunglasses and a mask. He was covered in dust and it was EVERYWHERE. If this was done outside it would be perfect!!

Helps foster curiosity in petrology . We also recently bought a similar set at our local natural history museum's gift shop. The magnetite isn't very strong, in fact it barely attracted the paperclip included with the rock. But it worked exceptionally well with some small pins (that I use for sewing), succeeding in holding two dangling pins end to end. I think you'll be disappointed if you expect it to be as strong as a conventional magnet.

As for the pumice, it floated as promised.

Initially I had difficulty getting the quartz to spark because I wasn't striking hard enough. Once I did, it worked really well, especially with successive hits because it actually illuminated the rock. Disappointingly, one of the rocks isn't as smooth as before making me not sure how long this "trick" will last; however, at the same time, it actually illustrates the idea of erosion.

I haven't tried the dolomite stone yet because I'm not sure exactly what it's teaching. I'd like to read up a bit on it first.

I purchased this for my 5 1/2 and 2 1/2 year-olds and gave them a small transparent container in which to store these rocks and a geode. Once all this rain stops, I'm planning to take them rock hunting to add to their collection. Even now, they really enjoy looking at them, especially my younger one. We have also been reading the books, Rocks, Rocks, Rocks Rocks! Rocks! Rocks! and Let's Read and Find OutLet's Go Rock Collecting (Let'S-Read-And-Find-Out Science. Stage 2).

Smaller version of kit- disappointed . We bought a slightly smaller version of this kit at a museum shop, and were disappointed with it. My son was very excited about the possibilities, but upon opening the kit the magnetic rock did not work at all and one of the quartz crystals broke into shards within the first 5 minutes of him trying to make the sparks (and he isn't that strong!). After one week no crystals formed on the dolomite... but the floating rock floated. 1 out of 4 worked as stated, not a good ratio.
