Cons Review

Coins made of clay? . The Dig! and Discover: Ancient Coins set has "coins" made of clay, set into the bottom of the clay in the kit. So while they say the coins are "cast," it's very misleading--who casts coins in mud/clay rather than metal? The end discovery was disappointing for our child, and I'm not sure exactly how he was supposed to "restore" clay coins. We think the product's value in the end is about $5.

It's a shame, too, because it seemed to have a lot of potential. For example, there was interesting information about ancient coins included in the kit, but the final product was so uninteresting that our child wasn't inclined to learn more.

Highly Educational Highly Recommended . This is a great product. Kristal Educational does a fantastic job in teaching archaeology, palentology, astronomy, or geology through a toy.

This toy also teaches patience and perseverance. Sure, there is a mess issue, but it can be easily contained by simply using newsaper, a little attentiveness, and a "project area".

Note: This is a "project" toy. It does take some time to complete. I would not recommend it to any child that has a low attention level.

My daughter received the Wooly Mammoth Dig Kit as a gift and she enjoyed it immensely. She still proudly displays it today.

Engaging for the Explorer of Any Age . Purchased the "Dig! Kits: Ancient Coins" as a gift. It was well-received by the giftee and they related it arrived well-packaged in a timely manner. If you know someone who has an interest in old coins and old civilizations who also likes to work with their hands it would be a great idea for a gift selection. Personally I'm of the opinion it is "age-appropriate" for anyone interested in this sort of subject matter.

Lousy product . My child received the indian arrowhead "Dig" kit. It is terrible. My husband had to resort to the garden hose to get all the muck off the "artifacts." We were left with a clay mold that is all one piece--frame, background and molded in arrowhead shapes.

It is a fragile clay, easily cracked and chipped. (If you drop it, I expect it will shatter.) The clay keeps rubbing off on towels and countertops. My son wasn't even interested in painting the thing.

Expedition : Skull Of Tyrannosaurus Rex in USA

Price : $14.99

Expedition : Skull Of Tyrannosaurus Rex in USA - Tyrannosaurus Rex was one of the most fearsome dinosaurs that ever walked the Earth - reaching a length of 47 ft (14 m) and a weight of up to 8 tons. With its 5 ft (1.5 m) head it could have swallowed humans whole if they had evolved by then! This kit allows you to excavate, restore and display a 7" (18 cm) reproduction of such a giant skull, embedded in a slate-like slab of rock. WARNING: Ages 7 +. Not Suitable for children under 3 years of ages. Contains small parts which may be ingested. Conform to ASTM F963-07

Cool and educational . My 9 year-old son who's really into gems and minerals received this for Christmas. Great gift! There's instant gratification with the "crystal mine," one of those dig it type activities, and fun watching different colored "gems" (simple crystal formations) grow on a rock which you supply. This takes about a week. My son has a collection of these crystal formations displayed in his room. With adult help and supervision, a child as young as 6 or 7 could have fun with this kit. One caution, though. My younger son accidentally spilled the green growing solution which contains a huge amount of coloring. Though we were able to clean it up, it was a big mess on the granite counter, wall, and tile floor. Next time we chose a container with a lid. Overall, a very cool gift, and different than anything I was able to find locally.

great science gift . this is a great product for that kid who loves science or that adult who likes to experiment. excellent educational item

Lousy product . My son received the Dig! Indian arrowheads kit. It is awful. My husband had to resort to the garden hose to clean all the muck off. Extremely messy.

When it was cleaned, we were left with a pre-molded clay frame, background, and molded arrowhead shapes already in place. What a disappointment! My son wasn't even interested in painting the thing. The clay is very fragile, easily chipped and cracked. It keeps rubbing off on cloth and countertops. A real bust.

Cons Review

Not what I expected . This product was not what I expected it to be. My 9 year old son is very much into the Civil War, this would have been a great present for him if it had been easier to work with. The project was very hard and time consuming. It did not look as represented. Not happy at all.
