Ferrofluid Science Project Set 60cc Bottle and Assorted Magnets

Ferrofluid Science Project Set 60cc Bottle and Assorted Magnets - A ferrofluid (from the Latin ferrum, meaning iron) is a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field. It is a colloidal mixture comprising extremely small magnetic particles suspended in a synthetic oil. The particles are coated with a a soap or detergent to prevent them from clumping together.
Ferrofluids are composed of nanoscale ferromagnetic particles suspended in a carrier fluid, usually an organic solvent or water. The ferromagnetic nano-particles are coated with a surfactant to prevent their agglomeration (due to van der Waals and magnetic forces). Although the name may suggest otherwise, ferrofluids do not display ferromagnetism, since they do not retain magnetisation in the absence of an externally applied field. In fact, ferrofluids display paramagnetism, and are often referred as being "superparamagnetic" due to their large magnetic susceptibility.

COMPONENTS

Magnetite: 3-15 % by volume
Oil Soluble Dispersant: 6-30 % by volume
Carrier Liquid: 55-91 % by volume

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 12, NOT DRINKABLE.

Unusual and fun to experiment with. . I don't know if there is any practical application for ferrofluid but it is certainly a novelty to use. Be sure you don't spill it as it is pretty messy. Also, be careful when it is in an open container as a magnetic field will pull it right out of or over the side of the container. The attraction to a rare earth magnet is amazingly strong. Bottom line is it's fun but not suitable for pre-teens without supervision.
Ferrofluid Science Project Set 60cc Bottle and Assorted Magnets Reviews
Ferrfluid . Awesome stuff but VERY MESSY! Stains everything it touches (clothes, ground, YOUR SKIN).

You'll have a good time, just wear rubber gloves and do it outside.
Ferrofluid Science Project Set 60cc Bottle and Assorted Magnets Opinions
Fun kit! . The 60cc bottle is plenty of fluid. The included petri dishes are a good start, but it's fun to try other containers. Highly curved surfaces (such as test-tubes) lead to interesting results. Also had fun with ferrofluid in a glass container with a non-miscible, slightly viscous liquid layered on top. Polyethylene glycol 400 works great. Water kinda works, but tends to develop an 'oil slick' on top.

As previous reviewers have noted, the ferrofluid can get messy. I was glad I used disposable gloves.
Science is fun . Great product, but as others have said it can be messy so be sure to wear gloves and cover the area you're working in. My only complaint is that I wish I could get more fluid at a cheaper price, the bottle is kind of small. The product description is correct, but for some reason I didn't realize it would be so small.

Tough bottle but cool substance . I bought a bottle of this for my boyfriend's birthday. When we tried to pour it into a container, the bottle was very tricky to work with. I ended up getting it on my fingers. The bottle comes with more than enough (nearly 5 times more) than you need to simply see the reaction, but more is always fun to play with. Think ahead when buying this product in terms of what you will put it in. A container that allows the liquid to lie as thin as possible, like a petri dish, is best. But if you are looking for some permanent home for it, look for something flat with a tight lid. So in the end, the substance is cool, the bottle's not.
Ferrofluid - 60 cc bottle, GREAT FOR SCIENCE PROJECTS Reviews
Great Buy! . The ferrofluid was safely contained and ample in supply.

60cc went further than I expected; even very thin layers of the ferrofluid demonstrated the magnetic field wonderfully.

Overall, the product was awesome, and something I'd definitely recommend purchasing.
Ferrofluid - 60 cc bottle, GREAT FOR SCIENCE PROJECTS Opinions
Too much fluid for small magnetic field . 60cc seems a bit too much fluid for just playing with small neodymium magnets. It seems you really only need a few drops to play with.
With a strong electromagnet you can do some extremely interesting things with the magnetic field.

Magnetic Viewing Film - Magnetic Field Display Film 6x6 - COOL !

Price :
BUY NOW
Magnetic Viewing Film - Magnetic Field Display Film 6x6 - COOL ! - Magnetic field display viewing film is used to visualize magnetic fields. It is a translucent paper-like substance which makes magnetic fields visible. Most are made from a plastic film that contains a ferromagnetic slurry of fine nickel particles that align themselves along magnetic field lines. The general principle of operation is that magnetizable nickel particles are suspended in a colloidal form in a gelatinous material. This allows enough freedom for the particles to align with an externally applied magnetic field - thereby displacing the colored fluid and causing a color change at the surface of the film. Recommended for ages 8 and older.

Feature Magnetic Viewing Film - Magnetic Field Display Film 6x6 - COOL !

  • Film can be easely cut with scisors and knifes
  • Made from a plastic film that contains a ferromagnetic slurry of fine nickel particles that align themselves along magnetic field lines
  • Fun experiments and Greate Education Material !!!
  • Visually see the patterns of magnetic field
  • Film Size: 6" long x 6" wide

This review is from : Magnetic Viewing Film - Magnetic Field Display Film 6"x6" - COOL !
It works but not to clear . This was a dissapointment. It does show the flux but not very clear. This is not a problem with the product. There is no better product. Its all we have right now to view flux fields. I am working on a better one. It seems I will have to invent it.

Feature Ferrofluid 4 oz 120 cc bottle Great for Science Projects

  • Purchase magnets in store
  • Lots of fun
  • Great for Science projects
  • One bottle of 30 cc ferrofluid

This review is from : Ferrofluid 4 oz 120 cc bottle Great for Science Projects
Works great! . Experience: The material was as expected. Normal shipping. No problem.

Notes:

Ferrofluid is really cool stuff! Too bad it stains like no other! You'll also need a hydrophillic container if you want to see it in easily.
Ferrofluid 4 oz 120 cc bottle Great for Science Projects Reviews
Very cool stuff! . First the bad, as others have noticed, this stains like mad and the container does not pour well. It also stinks to high heavens as well. But wow is it neat! I used a 1/2 inch neodymium magnet and put about 15-20 ml in a plastic food container. (Glad brand thin plastic resealable food container, like cheap thin tupperwear) Putting the magnet under the container produces immediate results. You can make the fluid flow uphill, and so much more.It is a rather expensive gag/novelty item, but very neat to play with..
