Great learning tool but not for younger kids . This is an impressive kit; you could learn a ton about electronics by working through it.

The main thing that distinguishes this from other (less expensive) kits is the breadboard and array of loose parts. In the product image, the breadboard is the middle white area in the lower section of the case, full of tiny holes. This is where you insert resistors, wires, and other parts in precise locations to set up the projects. This gives you great flexibility in wiring up circuits in a way that's more "real world" than other x-in-1 project kits. But it also means the kit isn't right for younger kids who are likely to find wiring up projects on the breadboard frustrating. If your kid is at the low end of the age range or would be frustrated by detailed instructions and putting lots of wires, resistors and capacitors in exact locations, this isn't the right kit.

As an adult who just wanted to learn how to create electronic circuits, though, I love it. I've done about eight of the experiments in the last week and plan to do many more.

Pros: Huge variety of experiments; more like creating real circuits than other similar kits; individual experiments teach you what the components do so you're really learning about electronics; good value considering everything that's included.

Cons: Not for folks who would find the breadboard wiring frustrating; probably need to buy a separate organizer case for storage of parts; Awkward English in lab manuals; first few projects might scare people off (Try the "Back to Basics" projects starting with #7 instead if this happens.)

Excelent Kit . I've gone through several "electronic labs" over the years and this one by far is the best. To get any "better" you would have to spend several hundred dollars more for "profesional labs." It's well built, lots of projects documented, and really there probably isn't any limit to the number of projects you could create with this. The fact that the whole thing folds up, attache case style, is also very handy for storing, espicially when projects aren't completed yet. I can use the included pockets for storing the wires, but there really isn't a good place for storing all the other extra parts, resistors, capacitors, etc. So far I'm getting by, by using the self closing bags it came with to store the parts and just spread them out on top of the board before closing the case as there is enough room inside to hold them (without a project in place that is).

Overall, excelent kit.

A Long Way from the days of the Radio Shack 40 in 1 Kit! . I remember as a boy of age 10, my father buying me the first Radio Shack 40 in 1 kit for boys and girls, so they could learn basic electronics and its applied usage in the then growing world of micro-circuit products, back in those days. That was back in the mid 1960's. Given the transistor had replaced vacuum tubes, when it came to creating logic circuits or hardwire algorythmic circuits for everything from television to the timer on your washing machine, it was good if you took some time to learn how all that stuff worked. In my case I had been bitten by the "how does it work" bug at an early age. While it didn't make me a wizard right away in hardwire design when it came to circuitry, I sure enjoyed what I was learning as I used that old Radio Shack kit back in those days to get a better education. At my current age I've learned to fix a lot of things on my own because I got started young to learn how all the electronic stuff around me works at its basic level early on in life.

I always had a love of taking things apart as a boy while wanting to know how all electronic gadgets worked. That was the budding engineer in me I guess. Fortunately, my father and mother were big on education and supported my thirst, as a budding electronic enthusiast, to learn all I could to how everything worked in the synthetic world of man, as well as the natural world of God's creation.

As I've gotten up in my years at age 54 these days, I keep myself busy with many scholarly studies, both as a scientist and an artist. I wanted to get something, as of late, for me to "play with" that would help refresh my basic micro electronic skills and also help expose me to the more newer advanced computer IC chip technology projects to help challenge my mind as I'm getting older. I did a lot of consulting work with engineers through my work years, as a technical publications consultant and illustrator. These days I'm a scientist in my own right having spent a life time studying man's sciences.

You have to know a lot about physics, programming concepts, software theory and hardware theory to do the work I was doing during those years. For me, this lab is like a "toy" to learn from, but if I had to give it to current day 10 year old boy or girl, I think he or she would see it as more than a toy especially if they have been bitten by the "how does it work" bug like I was when I was young. This is truly a lab made for adults as well as young children. I don't think age is an issue in this. I think desire to learn is everything. It's got a lot to offer any mind, young or old.

I remember one day my mother setting me down in a room while visiting a friend of hers at her friends apartment. I guess I must have been about three years old. Parents don't realize that kids, even at that age talk to each other once their parents leave. The boy in the room I was with had been taking apart an old radio and knew how every part of it worked. I know because I asked him to teach me. this kid was a boy genius when it came to electronics I learned. While I can't say all kids would be able to do what he did in terms of a desire to learn how something electronic works, you never know. I think the average boy or girl can apply themselves to this lab if they are at least 10 years old and have a desire to learn. If they are the budding genius type, then age won't matter.

The technical manuals that come with the whole lab take the reader from the names of all the electronic parts and the basic understanding of what they do, to their applied applications in real micro electronic usage. Each project builds in complexity as you learn how to assemble the circuits to perform desired works of physics to aid the senses of the eyes and ears or do small tasks of physical work, especially basic computer algorythmic tasks.

Electricy works much like water does when it flows through a pipe. Just as pipes work to control the flow of the power of water to feed, service and nourish a city, so does micro current do similar to make an electronic circuit do its trickery.

When I got into high school, I finally decided to take my first basic electronics class one summer. It was not only fun, but I loved what I was learning in how the things I used in my parent's home worked by starting to learn how to build circuit boards through simple projects. I was taught to understand that advanced hardware theory teaches that the designer must learn to harness and use light, or electrons, to do mechanical and other solid state work by using solid objects which restrict that light through electronic parts that make up any circuit board. When you see electricity, as light, with a force behind it, needing to be channeled, you don't have to be Harry Potter to do magic with it. You are being taught to control and channel power in this lab to reach certain goals via automation that can make life easier for you once each lesson is learned. It is a great place to learn how to think smarter for any young mind learning about today's world that is powered by gadgets galore and will make anyone better appreciate their solid state "toys" they buy, at any age, even your cellular phone.

In short, electricity works much like plumbing does. It can be channeled, controlled and directed where you want it to do the work needed to aid the senses or to aid the physical body in our current world of electronic gadgets, as well as aid the mind in doing its calculations which is what a computer is all about. This kit will help anyone, young or old, I've noticed, learn the tricks to do just that and in easy to understand steps, one project at at time. It's really a cool format the designers came up with, as I've inspected this lab.

You may desire to buy a small metal or plastic sorting cabinet for all the parts that come with the lab. My father left behind all these old plastic drawer units after his death, that he used to sort screws, washers and other parts in. Those work great for sorting the parts.

The tech manuals that come with this kit are on the large size, about the dimensions of the lab case itself and there are about three main manuals you get to use, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced project manuals. They are the size they are so the layout of circuit boards can be seen in a way that is easy to read. You will learn to read schematics as you work with this lab, as you get more practiced in learning the tricks hardware designers use to execute mechanical algorythmns which are at the heart of all hardware design.

I think this lab is a winner for the enthusiast who really wants to learn how our world of electronics works. I know from background, that all computers are fundamentally simple in terms of their routines and subroutines. Its only when you couple all those cycles together, like invisible gears, while using off and on switches, through a GUI interface, which is at the heart of today's laptop computers, does the whole thing tax on your memory as to how to keep track of it all even as an advanced computer user these days.

Still, if there was not so much theivery, copyright fighting tied to big money and such going on today in the world full of too much redundancy disguised as innovation, you'd find that a computer is really a simple machine in the end to learn about and understand. This lab will help you get there in your understanding I've noted.

I think if you are a parent or grandparent who has a young electronic enthusiast in your home who really wants to learn how things work in man's synthetic world of machines around him or her, they will be very excited with this lab, as a gift and it will keep them busy for a few years, as they work to master the things taught in this product. I know if my dad had bought something like this home to me at age 10, even if I were that age right now, I'd be powerfully excited with such a gift and all I had to look forward to in the learning curve this lab had waiting for me. I'd have given my dad one of the biggest hugs he had ever gotten from me too!

The product came in colorful packaging, well protected, even though it is all plastic, including the carry case. The carry case design of the lab is great for anyone who is serious about learning micro-electronics, even in a grade or high school setting and would like to carry this around with them. I use to wait after school in High School, a few hours after my last class, for my dad to pick me and my brother up, after he got off of work. I would have loved to have had this to work with when I was not studying my homework. This is also a great tool for any college student to use, as they learn to master the world of algorythmn technology in today's world of the electronic gadget and program sciences.

In the early days before computers could do the things they do today while being as small as they are today, hardware designers would learn to create algorythmns, also known as conditional transfers, through only mechanical means. My dad use to take us to the Science and Industry building in Los Angeles when we were boys and I always enjoyed visiting the place. You could see all the latest developments in electronic gadgetry and concepts, but all algorythmic theory was mainly mechanical and not software related like it is today. These days there is less mechancial algorythmic processing involved on the hardware side of the equation of design with more of it existing at the software level instead. The result is computers that are taking us to the day when the real Astroboy might be walking around someday as far as artificial intelligence is concerned. This lab won't teach you how to build a robot, but you will get a good foundation to the logic behind such concepts as you learn from this product.

For anyone who loves to learn how things work in our electronic age, this is a great lab to own, especially for the adult wanting to learn. It's very challenging and even uses the more relavent advanced IC chips for learning basic gateway structures in data processing which is at the heart of all computer mechanisms these days.

I give this product five stars. A lot of thought went into taking the reader from knowing nothing about micro electronic; to its practicle application as you learn from this truly great teaching aid. Nothing intimidating about this approach I might add and loads of fun to be challenged by.
Quality Product . I've always wanted to learn about electronics but was frustrated with the learn by reading process. This product is a wonderful teaching/learning device. It runs you through creating real working electronic devices. It also teaches you how to read electronic schematics. The breadboard can be a little frustrating until you get the hang of it.

I would be cautious of buying for a young child, but I think someone around 10 might be able to get into it without too much angst. As an adult (37 years), I find the instructions to be quite good and not juvenile like some other kits I came across.

Highly recommended if you're interesting in learning electronics for a hobby. You may find that you want to go further and get a degree in it.
